Find a Sacramento County Jail Inmate and Check Current Custody
If you are looking for someone arrested in Sacramento County, start with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Inmate Information system. It is the official county lookup for people in Sheriff custody and lets you search by a person’s first and last name or by XREF number.
This guide also explains what to do after you find the person: confirm whether they are at the Main Jail or Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC), understand booking and bail information, check visitation, send money or mail, contact an inmate, receive release alerts and find the related criminal court case.
Use the Sheriff’s public search before relying on a commercial people-search or mugshot site.

- RCCC: 12500 Bruceville Road, Elk Grove, CA 95757
- RCCC public line: 916-874-1927

Information reviewed: October 2026. Custody, housing, release, visitation and bail information can change quickly. Use the live Sheriff record before taking an action that depends on the inmate’s current status.
How to Search the Sacramento County Jail Roster
Sacramento County does not require you to scroll through one long alphabetical jail roster. The Sheriff provides a searchable Inmate Information system.
- Open the official Sacramento County Inmate Information page.
- Select NAME when you know the person’s legal first and last name.
- Enter both names and complete the CAPTCHA verification.
- If you already have the person’s XREF, choose XREF NUMBER instead.
- Review the returned names carefully.
- Open the record that matches the person you are trying to locate.
- Confirm the current custody location before visiting, sending money or mailing anything.
- Save the inmate’s XREF number. It is used for several Sacramento County jail services.
What You Can Learn From an Inmate Record
The amount of information shown can vary by record, but the live custody page may help you identify the correct person and understand the present jail situation.
| Information | What it helps you determine |
|---|---|
| XREF number | The person’s unique Sacramento County public-safety identifier. Keep it for deposits, mail and other jail services. |
| Custody location | Whether the person is currently associated with Main Jail, RCCC or another listed custody location. |
| Housing information | Helps confirm where the inmate is housed and can be important for visitation or legal mail. |
| Booking/custody information | Helps distinguish the current jail event from older records. |
| Charges | Shows available booking-level allegations known to the Sheriff. A listed charge is not proof of guilt. |
| Bail or hold information | May indicate whether bail is listed or another hold affects release. |
| Release information | May show current or projected release-related information when available. |
If the Inmate Does Not Appear in the Search
A missing result does not automatically mean the person was never arrested. Work through these checks:
- Confirm the spelling of the person’s legal first and last name.
- Use the XREF search if you have the number.
- If the arrest was very recent, allow time for booking and system entry.
- Confirm the arrest actually occurred in Sacramento County.
- Check whether the person has already been released.
- Consider whether the inmate was transferred to state custody or another jurisdiction.
- If you are looking for a criminal case rather than current custody, search Sacramento Superior Court.
- If you still believe the person is in Sacramento County Sheriff custody, call 916-874-6752.
The Sheriff states that detailed inmate information is displayed while a person is in custody. After release, the public online information is generally limited to the release date and time.
