Find an Orange County, California Jail Inmate

If you are trying to find someone recently arrested or currently held in an Orange County jail, start with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Information System. The county also provides a Booking Log for recent bookings.

Important: The current OC Sheriff inmate system requires users to create an account with an email address and password. The Sheriff also states that the current version does not display inmate charges. For case and charge information, use the related court record when available.

How to Search the Orange County Jail Roster

Orange County does not require you to search each jail building separately. The Sheriff’s countywide inmate system is the main starting point for people held in OC Sheriff custody.

  1. Open the official OC Sheriff Inmate Information System page.
  2. Continue to the Public Services Portal.
  3. Create an account with an email address and password if this is your first visit.
  4. Sign in and open the inmate-search service.
  5. Enter the inmate’s identifying information as requested by the portal.
  6. Compare the returned record carefully with the person you are looking for.
  7. If the arrest was very recent, also check the official Booking Log.
Search tip: Use the person’s full legal name when possible. If several people have similar names, compare available identifiers instead of assuming the first result is the correct person.

What the Inmate Search Can and Cannot Tell You

Use the jail system for custody

The Sheriff’s system is the appropriate place to confirm whether someone is currently in Orange County jail custody and to locate the relevant jail information available through the portal.

Use the court for the criminal case

A jail booking is not the same as a conviction or final case outcome. Orange County Superior Court provides separate criminal case access for available court information.

The OC Sheriff specifically states that charges are not displayed in the current Inmate Information System. If you need court dates, dispositions, or other available criminal-case details, use the Superior Court’s official system.

Orange County Jail Facilities

The Orange County Sheriff’s Custody Operations Command operates multiple jail facilities. An inmate can be booked at one location and housed or transferred to another, so confirm the current facility before mailing anything or planning a visit.

Facility Location Useful Contact
Central Men’s & Women’s Jails 550 N. Flower Street, Santa Ana, CA 92703 Inmate Records: 714-647-4666
Intake Release Center (IRC) 550 N. Flower Street, Santa Ana, CA 92703 714-647-6063
Theo Lacy Facility 501 The City Drive South, Orange, CA 92868 714-935-6940
James A. Musick Facility 13420 Alton Parkway, Irvine, CA 92618 949-855-2600

Facility assignments can change. Verify the inmate’s current housing location through the official inmate system before visiting or sending mail.

If You Cannot Find the Person

A missing result does not automatically mean the person was never arrested. Try these checks:

  • Confirm that the arrest occurred in Orange County, California, not Orange County in another state.
  • Check spelling, middle names, aliases, and legal-name variations.
  • Use the Booking Log if the arrest happened recently.
  • Confirm whether the person may already have been released.
  • Check Orange County Superior Court if you are looking for the court case rather than present custody.
  • If the person was transferred to state prison, the county jail system may no longer be the correct search source.

Visiting an Orange County Jail Inmate

Public visiting rules vary slightly by facility. OC Sheriff currently states that public visiting is generally limited to four visits per inmate each week, with one visit per day Friday through Monday.

For the Central Jail Complex, Intake Release Center and Theo Lacy Facility, appointments may be required. James A. Musick Facility currently allows Friday-through-Monday visiting and advises people to call ahead even where a scheduled appointment is not required.

Before you leave home

  1. Use the inmate search to confirm the current jail facility and booking number.
  2. Open the official OC Sheriff visiting page.
  3. Select the inmate’s current facility.
  4. Check whether an appointment is required and call the listed scheduling number when necessary.
  5. Bring acceptable government-issued photo identification.
  6. Arrive according to the facility’s instructions and avoid prohibited items.
Theo Lacy example: visiting is currently Friday through Monday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, by appointment. The Sheriff instructs visitors to schedule at least 24 hours in advance and have the inmate’s booking number ready.

How to Send Mail

OC Sheriff permits inmates to send and receive correspondence subject to jail security rules. Incoming and outgoing mail may be searched.

The inmate’s name and booking number are required on mail. The sender’s name and return address should also be included.

Inmate Facility Mailing Address
Central Men’s Jail, Central Women’s Jail or IRC 550 N. Flower Street, Santa Ana, CA 92703
Theo Lacy Facility 501 City Drive South, Orange, CA 92868
James A. Musick Facility 13420 Alton Parkway, Irvine, CA 92618

Check the Sheriff’s current Inmate Mail rules before sending photos, publications, cards, packages or other materials.

Booking Record vs. Court Record

These records answer different questions:

Jail / booking information

Helps answer whether a person is in county custody, where they are housed and what booking information the Sheriff currently makes available.

Court information

Helps answer what happened in the criminal case, including available hearing, filing and disposition information.

The Orange County Superior Court warns that online case information is provided for public convenience and is not itself the court’s official certified record. Certified records must be obtained through the court’s records process.

Use Jail Records Carefully

An arrest, booking or jail record does not establish guilt. Charges can change, cases can be dismissed, and people with similar names can be confused with one another. Confirm identity, jurisdiction, date and source before relying on a result.

10. What should I do if the inmate search returns no result?

Check the spelling and jurisdiction, review the Booking Log for recent arrests, consider whether the person was released or transferred, and search Orange County Superior Court if you need case information rather than current custody information.
