Responsible Use of Jail and Inmate-Search Information
Public availability does not eliminate the need for careful interpretation. Before relying on a result, verify the source, identity, date, jurisdiction, and intended use.
Five Checks Before Relying on a Result
- Source: Is this the agency that actually maintains the custody information?
- Identity: Are multiple reliable identifiers consistent?
- Timestamp: Is the information current, recently updated, or historical?
- Question: Are you trying to confirm custody or the later court outcome?
- Use: Is your intended use lawful and outside FCRA-regulated screening?
Custody Status Is Not Court Disposition
A jail system generally answers whether and where someone is held. A court system addresses the legal case. One should not be substituted for the other.
Do Not Use Public Information to Harass or Harm
Do not use our content to harass, threaten, stalk, intimidate, dox, impersonate, unlawfully discriminate, extort, or otherwise harm another person.
High-Stakes Accuracy
If a mistake could affect someone’s liberty, employment, housing, finances, family, reputation, or legal rights, verify through the responsible official source and seek appropriate professional advice when needed.
