How We Select and Verify Jail and Inmate Sources

Our strongest source is generally the agency that directly maintains the custody or facility information a reader is trying to confirm.

Source Hierarchy

Priority Source Typical use
1 Official county sheriff, jail, detention center, corrections division Current inmates, bookings, custody, facility, visitation, release fields.
2 Official county/local government Agency contacts, records instructions, department structure.
3 Official court or clerk Case status, docket, disposition, judgment, dismissal.
4 Official state corrections agency State prison custody, transfers, statewide offender search.
5 Federal official source Federal custody and federal court matters.
6 Secondary source Context only, not preferred over the record custodian.

Official National Fallbacks

How We Resolve Conflicting Information

  1. Identify which agency owns the specific data.
  2. Compare timestamps and update cycles.
  3. Separate custody questions from court-status questions.
  4. Separate local jail custody from state/federal custody.
  5. Prefer current official material over copied or cached summaries.
  6. Disclose uncertainty when the conflict cannot be resolved.

Verification Checklist

  • Is the source official?
  • Does the agency serve the named county/location?
  • Is the search current, historical, local, statewide, or federal?
  • What identifiers does the tool support?
  • Does the agency warn about delays or incomplete data?
  • Is a court or corrections fallback necessary?
  • Have we preserved the distinction between booking and conviction?
