How to search the Sumter County jail roster
- Open the official SCSO Jail View.
- Enter at least one search criterion. Starting with the person’s last name is usually easiest.
- Add the first or middle name if the initial search returns several people.
- For an older booking or someone who may already have been released, use the booking-date or release-date fields.
- Submit the search and open the matching inmate record.
- Compare the date of birth, age, booking date and other identifiers before assuming you found the correct person.
- Check every listed charge, hold and bond entry rather than relying only on the summary bond field.
The public search also supports sorting and a choice of record types. When no individual search has been entered, the system may display recent bookings, making it useful when you know someone was arrested recently but do not yet know the booking number.
What the official inmate record can show
| Record field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Status | Whether the record currently shows the person in jail or in another displayed custody status. |
| Booking number | The identifier for that jail booking. Save it when contacting the jail or checking related records. |
| MNI number | An additional Sheriff’s Office identifying number that may help distinguish people with similar names. |
| Booking date | When the person was processed into the jail for that booking. |
| Housing | Facility, dorm, pod or cell information may appear after a housing assignment is made. |
| Charges | Listed allegations associated with the booking, often including the Florida statute and arresting agency. |
| Court case number | When available, this is useful for moving from the jail record to the Clerk’s court file. |
| Bond | The record may show an overall bond field plus separate bond information for individual charges. |
| Holds | Another county, immigration authority or other agency may have a hold that affects release. |
If someone was arrested but does not appear
A recent arrest does not always become searchable immediately. Try these checks before assuming the person is not in custody:
- Search only the surname instead of filling every field.
- Try the booked legal name rather than a nickname.
- Check spelling, hyphenated names and multiple surnames.
- Use a booking-date range if the arrest happened several days ago.
- Use a release-date search if the person may already have left custody.
- Confirm the arrest actually occurred in Sumter County.
- Allow time for a very recent booking to finish processing.
- Call the detention center at 352-569-1700 if the online search does not resolve the question.
Jail record vs. criminal court record
The jail roster answers a custody question. The court system answers what is happening in the criminal case. After locating the correct inmate, use the Sumter County Clerk when you need court filings, hearing information, case activity or the eventual disposition.
- Copy the court case number from Jail View when one is displayed.
- Open the Sumter County Clerk court-record page.
- Search using the defendant’s name or case information.
- Match the defendant carefully.
- Review the available docket and case activity.
The Clerk handles criminal cases from its Bushnell offices. Its main office is at 215 E. McCollum Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513, and the main telephone number is 352-569-6600.
First appearance and bond in Sumter County
The Sumter County Clerk explains that a person who is unable to bond out within 24 hours will appear before a county judge for a first-appearance hearing. The judge addresses bond and attorney status. Weekend first appearances are also held for people who remain in custody.
For a felony case, the first appearance generally addresses bond and attorney status before the case proceeds toward arraignment in Circuit Court. Misdemeanor and criminal-traffic matters are handled through County Court.
Before paying a bond:
- Locate the inmate in Jail View.
- Confirm the booking number.
- Review every charge and its bond entry.
- Check for “NO BOND” entries or outside-agency holds.
- If anything is unclear, confirm the current amount and eligibility with the detention center before making payment.
The Sheriff’s current inmate-services information states that the kiosk in the public information lobby can be used to place cash bonds.
How to send money for commissary
Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says money belonging to an inmate at booking is placed in the inmate account, less a $20 subsistence fee. Friends and family can add funds using approved methods.
| Method | Practical detail |
|---|---|
| Intake/release lobby kiosk | Available 24/7 according to the Sheriff’s inmate-services page. |
| Visitation-center kiosk | Available during visitation-center hours. |
| Online deposit | Use the provider linked from the official Sheriff’s inmate-services page. |
The Sheriff’s page says its kiosks accept cash, debit cards and credit cards and are for deposits only; they do not dispense cash.
Inmates may use available account money for commissary purchases such as personal items and snacks. The Sheriff’s current page also describes an indigent process for inmates who have been incarcerated for seven consecutive days, have less than $2 in their account and did not receive commissary the previous week.
Phone, tablet and video visitation information
The Sheriff’s Office maintains a dedicated Inmate Phone, Tablet & Video Visitation page. Use that current page when setting up communications because providers, account procedures and visitation rules can change.
Do not fund a communication account based only on an old jail directory, archived handbook or third-party inmate-search site. Start from the current Sheriff’s page so you reach the provider currently approved by the facility.
Routine jail calls and video communication may be monitored or recorded under facility rules. Sensitive legal discussions should be handled through the appropriate confidential attorney communication process.
Inmate mail and e-messaging
The Sheriff’s Office also provides a current page for inmate mail and electronic messaging. Jail correspondence is subject to facility security rules and inspection requirements, while qualifying legal mail is handled under separate procedures.
Before mailing photos, cards, publications or other materials, check the current instructions rather than relying on old third-party rules. Mail vendors, address formats and prohibited-item policies can change.
Release, transfer and property
If Jail View stops showing a person as currently incarcerated, that does not necessarily mean the criminal case is over. The person may have:
- posted bond;
- been released by court order;
- completed a local jail sentence;
- been transferred to another county or agency;
- been transferred to Florida Department of Corrections custody; or
- left Sumter County custody while the court case remains active.
If you need to collect an inmate’s property, confirm the current authorization and identification requirements with the detention center before traveling to Bushnell.
Do not confuse the county jail with Sumter Correctional Institution
Sumter County Detention Center and Sumter Correctional Institution are different facilities.
| Facility | System | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Sumter County Detention Center | Sumter County Sheriff’s Office | 219 E. Anderson Ave., Bushnell |
| Sumter Correctional Institution | Florida Department of Corrections state prison system | 9544 County Road 476B, Bushnell |
If the person was sentenced and transferred into the Florida state prison system, search through the Florida Department of Corrections instead of continuing to search the county jail roster.
