Find a Sonoma County Jail Inmate and Check Current Custody
If you are looking for someone arrested in Santa Rosa or elsewhere in Sonoma County, the most direct place to start is the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Incarcerated Person Search. The official database is designed to show people who are in Sonoma County Jail custody at the time of the search.
- Open the official Sonoma County Sheriff’s incarcerated-person search.
- Read the Sheriff’s disclaimer and select I Agree.
- Search using the person’s last name or booking number.
- Open the matching result and verify the age, booking date and arresting agency.
- Review the facility, charges, bail, case number and listed court dates.
How the Sonoma County Jail Roster Search Works
Instead of requiring users to browse a long static jail roster, Sonoma County provides a searchable custody database. The Sheriff’s search supports two practical lookup methods.
| Search method | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Last name | Use this when you know the person’s legal surname but do not have the booking number. |
| Booking number | Use this when available. It is normally the most precise way to identify a particular jail booking. |
If several records have similar names, compare the available age, booking information and arresting agency before deciding that you have found the correct person.
Information you may find in an inmate record
- full name;
- age;
- booking number;
- arresting agency;
- date and time booked;
- current detention facility;
- facility address;
- mailing information;
- criminal charges;
- court case number;
- bail amount or a no-bail designation; and
- scheduled court date, time and courtroom when available.
Custody details can change after a court hearing, release decision, transfer or other case action. If you are making an important legal or financial decision, verify the current status through the official Sheriff or court system.

If You Cannot Find the Person in the Jail Search
If the official search returns no result, check these possibilities before assuming the information is incorrect:
- Check the spelling. Use the person’s legal last name and try reasonable spelling variations.
- Allow time after a recent arrest. Someone arrested very recently may still be going through intake and booking.
- Confirm the arresting jurisdiction. An arrest near a county boundary may lead to booking in another county or agency.
- Consider release. The Sonoma County search focuses on people currently in custody.
- Consider a transfer. A person may have moved to another correctional agency or California state custody.
- Contact the jail. Call (707) 565-1400 if the online information remains unclear.
Looking for a person who has already been released?
The current inmate lookup is not intended to function as a complete historical arrest database. For detention records involving a person who is no longer shown in custody, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s records operation may be more appropriate.
The Sheriff’s Central Information Bureau Records Unit lists (707) 565-2204 for records assistance. Published office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

Transferred to California state prison?
If the person has entered California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation custody, the county jail lookup is no longer the correct system. Use California’s state incarcerated-person search instead.

Charges, Bail and Sonoma County Court Information
An inmate record may display one or more criminal charges, a case number, bail information and upcoming court dates. These fields help identify the related case, but the jail record and the official court case record are separate.
Sonoma County Superior Court Case Portal
The Sonoma County Superior Court’s criminal functions are associated with the Hall of Justice at 600 Administration Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. Because hearing dates and courtrooms may change, verify time-sensitive court appearances directly through the court.
An arrest, booking or criminal charge is not proof that a person is guilty. Charges may be changed or dismissed, and bail or release conditions may be modified by the court.
Sonoma County Jail Visitation
Personal jail visits require an appointment. Under the Sheriff’s currently published visitation procedure, appointments are made by phone at (707) 565-1400 from Tuesday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Same-day sign-ups are not offered.

- A maximum of two people may attend a visit.
- An incarcerated person may receive one personal visit per visitation day.
- Visitors must check in approximately 20 minutes before the scheduled visit.

How to Send Mail to a Sonoma County Inmate
Sonoma County changed its non-privileged inmate-mail process in 2025. Ordinary personal mail is now routed through Pigeonly rather than mailed directly to the detention facility.
All inmate mail must include the person’s booking number. If you do not know it, obtain it from the official inmate search before preparing the envelope.

How to Put Money on an Inmate Account
Sonoma County distinguishes between an incarcerated person’s general account and a communication account.
| What the money is for | Current method |
|---|---|
| Commissary/general account | InmateCanteen, the TouchPay kiosk in the MADF lobby, or the Sheriff’s published telephone deposit option |
| Calls, tablet services and messaging | ViaPath communication account |
The Sheriff’s deposit instructions currently list 1-667-265-8182 as a telephone option for deposits to the general account.
The Sheriff’s policy also states that a deposit will not be accepted if it would cause an incarcerated person’s account balance to exceed $1,000.

Sonoma County Jail Commissary
The Main Adult Detention Facility operates a commissary where incarcerated people can use available account funds to purchase approved items.
Examples can include hygiene products, stationery, reading glasses, envelopes, paper, greeting cards, beverages and snacks. The Sheriff’s current commissary information states that incarcerated people may purchase up to $100 per week.
Family and friends can also use the county’s designated service to purchase eligible care packages or add funds.

- Create or sign in to your account.
- Find and add the incarcerated person to your contacts.
- Add funds to the appropriate communication account if required.
