Find a San Diego County Jail Inmate

If you are trying to find someone recently arrested in San Diego County, start with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Who’s in Jail database. It is the official current-custody search for people held in Sheriff’s detention facilities.

The lookup can help you identify the person’s booking record, current jail, charges, bail information, next court information and release information when those fields are available.

Official agencySan Diego County Sheriff’s Office
Custody information(619) 409-5000
Search coverageCurrent Sheriff’s jail custody
Search-site notice: the Sheriff’s Who’s in Jail system states that it is normally taken offline for maintenance each Wednesday at noon and is generally restored within about 30 minutes. The Sheriff also warns that displayed release dates may require confirmation.

How to Use the San Diego Jail Inmate Search

  1. Open the official Sheriff’s Who’s in Jail page.
  2. Enter at least two characters of the person’s first and last name. Using more of the legal name can narrow common-name results.
  3. Complete the human-verification step shown by the Sheriff’s website.
  4. Select LookUp and review the matching names carefully.
  5. Open the correct record and compare identifying details before relying on the booking information.
If the LookUp button does not work: the Sheriff’s page recommends closing and reopening the browser, refreshing the page, completing the human-verification box, updating the browser, or trying another device.

What the inmate record can show

Record fieldWhat it helps you check
Booking numberIdentifies the current booking and is useful for mail, visits and custody questions.
Housing locationShows the Sheriff’s facility and available housing information.
Arrest informationMay identify the arresting agency plus booking date and time.
Bail statusShows available bail information for the current booking.
Release informationMay show sentencing or projected-release information when available.
Charges / casesHelps connect the jail booking with pending charge and court information.

A jail record documents custody or an accusation. It does not establish guilt, and charges, bail, housing and release information can change.

If a Recent Arrest Does Not Appear

A newly arrested person may not appear immediately because transportation, intake and booking still have to be completed. Do not assume a missing result means the person was released.

  • Retry using the first two letters of the person’s first and last name.
  • Check alternate spellings, hyphenated names and legal names.
  • Confirm the arrest happened in San Diego County.
  • Allow time for a very recent arrest to reach the Sheriff’s booking system.
  • Call (619) 409-5000 if you need current custody confirmation.
  • If the person has already been released, use court or records resources instead of relying only on the current jail roster.

Special note for Chula Vista arrests

The Sheriff’s search specifically directs users to a separate Chula Vista Police resource for some Chula Vista arrests. Chula Vista Police describes its city jail as a temporary holding and booking facility, with arrestees later transported to a Sheriff’s jail or another appropriate facility.

  1. Check the Chula Vista Police Who’s in Jail listing.
  2. If the person has already been transferred, run the name again in the county Sheriff’s Who’s in Jail search.
  3. Use the housing location in the Sheriff’s record before planning a visit or sending mail.

San Diego County Jail Locations

The Sheriff’s Office operates seven detention facilities. Facility assignments can change, so use the inmate’s live record before traveling.

  1. Find the inmate and confirm the current facility.

  3. Use the Sheriff’s eVisit option available through Who’s in Jail or call (619) 409-5000.
  4. Schedule in advance; same-day video reservations are not accepted.
  5. Check the facility-specific arrival time before leaving home.

Phone Calls and Electronic Messages

Calls from jail

San Diego County Sheriff’s jail phone calls are free. The Sheriff states that local, long-distance and international calls are free, with individual calls limited to 15 minutes so other incarcerated people can access the phones.

Calls from the jail system may appear from 727-349-1561. If legitimate jail calls are being filtered as spam, save the number or contact your mobile carrier. Telephone-service questions can also be directed to Smart Communications at that number.

Check official telephone information.

Email an incarcerated person

The Sheriff’s electronic-message process begins with the Who’s in Jail record. Search for the person, open the correct name, and use the available message option. Messages for people who are no longer in custody are not delivered.

View Sheriff’s electronic-message instructions.

Send Money and Commissary Funds

People in Sheriff’s custody can use account funds to purchase approved commissary items such as food, hygiene products, stationery, reading glasses and personal items.

  1. Confirm the inmate’s identity and booking information in Who’s in Jail.
  2. Open the Sheriff’s official commissary page.
  3. Follow the Sheriff’s current deposit or gift-pack option.
  4. Review current limits and payment rules before submitting money.
Payment safety: verify the correct inmate before sending money. Do not rely on unsolicited callers claiming you must immediately pay a private company to prevent an inmate from remaining in custody.

How to Send Mail

General correspondence for Sheriff’s jail inmates is processed through a centralized Mail Processing Center. Do not simply mail a letter to the street address of the inmate’s jail.

San Diego County Jail Mail Processing Center Incarcerated Person’s Full Name
Booking Number
Current Housing Facility
Mail Processing Center
451 Riverview Parkway, Building C
Santee, CA 92071

Include the person’s name, booking number and facility, plus the sender’s name and return address. General jail mail is inspected for contraband and security reasons. Legal mail is handled separately. Books and magazines must follow the Sheriff’s publisher/vendor rules.

Review the current official mail rules before sending anything.

Bail and Release Information

The inmate-detail page contains a bail section when bail information is available. The Sheriff’s Office is authorized to accept bail in cash or through a surety bond, but posting bail does not guarantee immediate release. Another case, hold or legal condition may keep the person in custody.

  1. Open the inmate’s current booking record.
  2. Check the listed bail status and related cases.
  3. Confirm the amount and inmate identity before paying anyone.
  4. Use the Sheriff’s current jail and bail information if a bond is being considered.
  5. Call the custody information line when release timing is important.
Projected release dates: the Sheriff’s Who’s in Jail page currently cautions that some displayed release dates may not be accurate and recommends contacting the facility for confirmation.

Find the Criminal Court Case

Jail custody and court records answer different questions. The jail system tells you about the current booking; San Diego Superior Court provides the case index for filed court matters.

  1. Use Who’s in Jail to identify available case or court information.
  2. Open the San Diego Superior Court Online Case Search.
  3. Search using a party name, court case number or District Attorney case number.
  4. Use the result to identify the case number, court location, case type and filing information.

Criminal matters are handled through Central, North County, South County and East County court locations depending on the case. Online court information does not replace the official case file.

San Diego Jail Inmate Search FAQs

1. What is the official San Diego County jail inmate search?

4. Why can’t I find someone in the San Diego jail roster?

The booking may still be processing, the name may be entered differently, the person may have been released or transferred, or another agency may be holding them. Chula Vista Police also maintains a separate temporary holding and booking listing.

Open the person’s Who’s in Jail record and check the housing-location section. Confirm the facility again before visiting or mailing anything because inmates can be transferred.

No. The Sheriff states that posting bail does not guarantee release because another case, warrant, hold or legal condition may require the person to remain in custody. Confirm current status before making plans.

10. How do I find an old San Diego booking or criminal case?

Use the Sheriff’s Records & ID Division for eligible arrest, booking or local criminal-history records and use San Diego Superior Court’s online case search for filed court cases. Current Who’s in Jail results should not be treated as a complete historical arrest database.
