Find an Oakland County Jail Inmate and Check Current Custody Details

If you are trying to find someone recently arrested or currently held in Oakland County, start with the CLEMIS Inmate Locator used by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. It is the primary public search for Oakland County Jail custody information.

Prisoner information248-858-1800
Jail general information248-858-5000

Official lookupCLEMIS Inmate Locator

Information reviewed October 15, 2026. Jail records, visitation rules, vendor fees and release status can change after publication.

Important: Oakland County warns that inmate information may be as much as 72 hours out of date, depending on the day of the week. A missing record does not automatically mean the person was never booked or has not been arrested.

How to Search the Oakland County Jail Roster

  1. Open the official CLEMIS Inmate Locator.
  2. Complete the security verification if the site asks for one.
  3. Select Oakland County Jail.
  4. Search using the inmate’s correct legal name or other identifying information available in the locator.
  5. Compare matching records carefully before assuming you found the correct person.
  6. Write down the inmate number and any available booking information. You may need the inmate number for mail, deposits, phone services or other jail transactions.
Best search practice: Use the person’s full booking name instead of a nickname. If several people have similar names, use age, booking information or other identifying details before sending money or mail.

What the Inmate Search Can—and Cannot—Tell You

The Oakland County inmate locator is primarily a custody and booking lookup. It should not be treated as a complete criminal-history report or proof that someone was convicted.

If You Cannot Find the Inmate

Do these checks before assuming the person is not in custody:

  • Check the spelling of the first and last name.
  • Search the legal or booking name rather than a nickname.
  • Allow time for transport, intake and booking after a recent arrest.
  • Remember that the Sheriff’s Office says online information may sometimes be up to 72 hours behind.
  • Call 248-858-1800 for Oakland County prisoner information.
  • If the person may have been sentenced to state prison, search Michigan OTIS. OTIS does not list people who are only in county jail.
  • If federal custody is possible, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.

Charges, Court Dates and Bond Information

The inmate roster can help identify the correct person, but Oakland County specifically directs users to the court of jurisdiction for questions about an inmate’s specific charge or bond type.

Posting bond at the jail

The Sheriff’s current inmate-information page says the jail’s bonding area operates 24 hours a day. Regular, surety, interim, and fines-and-costs bonds can be handled there. Cash bonds of $10,000 or more are processed at the court of jurisdiction.

Published jail payment methods include:

  • Cash
  • Credit card
  • Cashier’s check payable to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office
  • A bail bondsman when applicable

The Sheriff’s Office specifically states that it does not accept Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency for inmate bonds.

Money already in an inmate’s account may be applied to bond in whole or in part with the inmate’s approval. If money being deposited should be reserved for bond, tell the Visitation or Bonding officer before making the deposit.

Before paying: Confirm the inmate, current bond amount, bond type and court. Bond conditions can change after arraignment or another court hearing.

How to Put Money on an Inmate Account

Oakland County uses Smart Communications for inmate trust-account deposit options. The county also states that cash or money orders may be dropped off in the Main Jail visitation area. Checks are not accepted, and the inmate’s name and number should be clearly shown on a money order.

Trust-account money is separate from phone and video-visitation credits. Depositing money into an inmate’s trust account does not automatically make those funds available for outside phone calls or remote video visits.

Commissary

The Sheriff’s April 2024 Inmate Guide states that commissary orders can be placed once each week and lists a maximum purchase of $150 per order. It also states that an inmate with $2 or less may request an indigent order, which can later be charged against future funds received.

Because commissary limits can change, treat the dollar limit as the amount published in the April 2024 guide rather than a guaranteed future limit.

Oakland County Jail Visitation

Oakland County currently conducts social visits using video visitation through jail kiosks or inmate tablets. Visits are scheduled through Smart Communications.

Visit typeCurrent published hours
Professional visitsMonday-Sunday, 7:15 a.m.-8:30 p.m.
Family & friendsMonday-Friday, 1:15 p.m.-8:15 p.m.
Family & friendsSaturday-Sunday, 9:15 a.m.-8:15 p.m.

Visits must currently be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance and may be booked up to two weeks ahead. Visits can be 15 or 30 minutes.

Current prohibited visitation periods are:

  • 10:30 a.m.-12:00 noon
  • 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

On-site visits are currently listed as free. Remote visits are listed at 11 credits per minute, with one credit equal to $0.01.

Visitors must have a current driver’s license, state ID or passport. The county currently allows one adult visitor and one child visitor. Children may not be left unattended in the on-site waiting area.

Visitor clothing

The jail may deny entry for transparent or revealing clothing, tank or tube tops, bathing suits, certain short skirts or shorts, gang-related clothing, drug- or alcohol-related clothing, or other attire considered unsafe. Religious headwear may be permitted.

Use the live visitation page before scheduling: Oakland County’s April 2024 inmate-guide PDF still contains older visitation language, including different advance-booking requirements and days. The Sheriff’s current live visitation page has newer instructions, so use the current official visitation page when making an appointment.

Inmate Phone Calls

Oakland County currently uses Smart Communications for inmate telephone service. The Sheriff’s inmate-information page lists inmate calls at $0.06 per minute.

  • Each inmate is allowed one free 15-minute telephone call per week.
  • The initial booking call does not count as that weekly free call.
  • The initial booking call is limited to three minutes.
  • Attorney calls are free and may be unlimited in duration under the jail’s published rules.
  • Ordinary outgoing inmate calls are recorded.

Smart Communications customer support is currently listed as 727-349-1561 or toll-free 888-253-5178.

Attorney calls and recording

For a criminal-defense attorney’s inmate calls not to be recorded, Oakland County says the attorney should send a letter on firm letterhead to the Executive Lieutenant of the Oakland County Jail at:

Oakland County Jail
1201 N. Telegraph Road
Pontiac, MI 48341

The letter should identify the inmate, the attorney’s receiving telephone number or numbers, and the attorney’s bar number.

How to Send Mail to an Oakland County Inmate

Do not send ordinary personal mail directly to the jail street address. Regular letters, photos, postcards and greeting cards are processed through Smart Communications.

Standard personal mail

Oakland County Jail
Inmate Name – Inmate Number
PO Box 9103
Seminole, FL 33775-9103

Legal and business mail

Attorney correspondence, court documents, bank statements, magazines and newspapers use a separate address:

Oakland County Jail
Inmate Name – Inmate Number
PO Box 436017
Pontiac, MI 48343

Items that can cause mail rejection

The Sheriff’s current rules prohibit or restrict items including:

  • Cards or photographs larger than 5×7 inches
  • Glue, tape, glitter, ink stamps, White Out or stains
  • Lipstick or perfume
  • Newspaper clippings or blank paper
  • More than 10 photographs
  • Crayons, markers or stickers
  • Stamps or envelopes
  • Instant photographs
  • Nude or sexually explicit material
  • Large or overly heavy books weighing two pounds or more

Packages, including food packages, are not accepted under the jail’s current public instructions.

Electronic messages

The county also allows electronic messaging through SmartInmate. Its current inmate-information page lists messages at $0.50 each and photos at $1 each, with a $5 minimum deposit plus a one-time $1.50 setup fee. It also states that inmates receive one free incoming and one free outgoing message each Saturday.

Medical and Medication Information

Family or friends who need to tell jail medical staff about medication an inmate was taking before incarceration can use the Medication Hotline: 248-858-1809. Include the inmate’s name, inmate number if known, and medication information.

Medical staff are restricted by HIPAA and generally cannot release an inmate’s private medical information simply because a caller is a relative or friend.

The April 2024 inmate guide lists the following non-emergency inmate medical charges:

Medical clinic visit$12
Dental clinic visit$10
Prescription medication processing$5 per medication, per order

The guide also states that emergency care, required initial health assessments, mental-health services and certain follow-up or policy-required services are free, and that an inmate is not denied medical treatment because of inability to pay.

Inmate Property

For property questions, Oakland County lists the inmate-property line as 248-858-8770.

The April 2024 inmate guide says an inmate who wants someone to pick up personal property must:

  1. Arrange for a person to come to the jail.
  2. Request a Property Release / Clothing Exchange form.
  3. Write the authorized person’s name on the form.
  4. Sign the authorization.

The same guide warns that unclaimed inmate property is disposed of 14 days after release.

Scheduled Release and Pickup

For an inmate with a scheduled outdate, the Sheriff’s current inmate-information page says the person picking them up should check in at the Bonding window. A current LEIN check is performed before release.

If there are no holds, warrants or detainers, the inmate may be released as close to 12:01 a.m. as processing allows. The April 2024 guide adds that the midnight-release process requires a ride to be present; if transportation does not arrive, release can occur during the normal day shift instead.

Do not plan a pickup from the roster alone. A court order, warrant, detainer, transfer or processing issue can affect the actual release time.

Jail Records and Older Inmate Files

If you need a record that is not available through the live inmate locator, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Records Unit maintains records including incident reports and inmate jail files.

Records Unit248-858-5011
Emailocsorecords@oaklandcountymi.gov
Address1201 N. Telegraph Road, Pontiac, MI 48341
Published hoursMonday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., except applicable holidays

For a person’s court case rather than their jail file, use the court that handled the case. A jail booking record and a court criminal record serve different purposes.

Oakland County Jail Search vs. Michigan OTIS

This distinction prevents many failed searches:

SystemWho it is for
Oakland County / CLEMISPeople held in Oakland County Jail and related local custody information
Michigan OTISMichigan prisoners, parolees and probationers under MDOC jurisdiction or recently discharged from supervision

Michigan DOC specifically states that OTIS does not contain people held only in county jails or city lockups. Start with CLEMIS for an Oakland County arrest; move to OTIS when the person may have entered the state correctional system.
