Find a Cherokee County Inmate and Verify Current Custody
If you are trying to find someone arrested in Cherokee County, South Carolina, start with the live Cherokee County inmate portal. This page is specifically for Cherokee County, SC and the Gaffney detention center — not Cherokee County in Georgia, Alabama or North Carolina.
How to Search the Cherokee County Jail Roster
- Open the Cherokee County inmate portal using the button above.
- Search with the inmate’s legal first and last name when a name-search field is available, or review the current inmate list.
- Open the matching record and compare the person’s name and available identifying information carefully.
- Review the booking, charge, custody, court or bond information shown for that record.
- If the person is not listed and the arrest was recent, wait for booking to finish and search again.
- If custody is still unclear, call the Cherokee County Detention Center at 864-487-2529.
A jail roster changes as people are booked, released or transferred. Treat the live custody record as a snapshot rather than a permanent criminal-history record.

What You May Find in an Inmate Record
The live roster is primarily useful for confirming current custody. Depending on the record and the stage of booking, available information may include:
- inmate name;
- booking or custody information;
- listed criminal charges;
- booking photograph when publicly available;
- bond information;
- court-related information; and
- current detention status.
Important: an arrest, booking or criminal charge does not mean that the person has been convicted. For the progress or final outcome of a case, use the court record rather than relying only on the jail roster.
If You Cannot Find the Person
Check these possibilities before assuming the person is not in custody:
- Recent arrest: booking and data entry may not be complete yet.
- Name difference: try the person’s full legal name and confirm spelling.
- Already released: a person may leave the current-custody list after release.
- Transferred: the person may have moved to another county, state or federal facility.
- State prison: someone sentenced into SCDC custody should be searched through the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
- Different jurisdiction: confirm that the arrest actually occurred in Cherokee County, South Carolina.
Search South Carolina State Prison Custody
The Cherokee County jail roster and the South Carolina Department of Corrections search serve different purposes. SCDC states that its online search covers people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in South Carolina state-prison custody. It does not serve as the county-jail roster.
Open the official SCDC inmate search.
Use SC VINE for Custody Notifications
SC VINE can be useful when you need custody-status information or notification of qualifying status changes. The statewide service allows concerned members of the public and crime victims to search for adult offenders and, where available, register for notifications.
You can also call SC VINE at 1-866-727-2846.
How to Check the Criminal Court Case
The jail record tells you about custody. The court record is the better source for hearings, filings and the progress of a criminal case.
- Open the South Carolina Judicial Branch page for Cherokee County.
- Select Case Records Search.
- Accept the public-record terms when prompted.
- Search for the defendant using accurate identifying information.
- Compare the court case with the charge or booking information from the jail record.
The Cherokee County Clerk of Court manages General Sessions criminal court records. The courthouse is at 125 E. Floyd Baker Blvd., Gaffney, SC 29342, and the Clerk’s main number is 864-487-2571.
Bond and Release Information
Start with the current inmate record because available bond information may be displayed with the booking. Bond status can change after a court appearance or later court order, so do not rely on an old screenshot or third-party inmate page when money or release is involved.
For a current custody or release question, call the Detention Center at 864-487-2529. For court-side criminal matters, the Cherokee County Magistrate’s Office handles criminal and traffic matters and can be reached at 864-487-2533.

Cherokee County Inmate Visitation
The county’s visitation directive currently posted online is effective March 18, 2024. It provides both in-person and video visitation, subject to inmate eligibility, scheduling, security restrictions and available space.
- In-person visits must be requested at least 24 hours in advance and no more than 7 days ahead.
- An inmate may receive one 20-minute in-person visit per week under the posted policy.
- Only two persons may be in the in-person visitation area at one time; the policy contains limited provisions for infants and toddlers.
- Visitors must provide acceptable identification.
- Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Video visits may be offered at the facility or remotely.
- Remote video visitation requires internet access and may involve a provider fee.
- Visits may be monitored and recorded.
Current unit visitation days
The posted 2024 policy assigns in-person visitation days by housing unit:
- Monday: Alpha and FMAX
- Tuesday: Bravo
- Wednesday: Delta
- Thursday: Echo
- Friday: CMAX
Housing assignments and schedules can change, so confirm the inmate’s current unit and appointment before traveling.
Visitor property and dress rules
Visitors should expect restrictions on personal belongings. The posted policy says items such as cell phones, purses, tobacco products, wallets, cameras, pagers and recording devices must be stored in available lockers or secured in the visitor’s vehicle for an on-site visit.
Shoes and shirts are required. Clothing that is excessively revealing, see-through, displays profanity or sexual content, or otherwise violates facility standards can result in a visit being terminated.
Read the current county visitation policy.
How to Send Mail to a Cherokee County Inmate
The Detention Center’s published mail rules are more restrictive than ordinary personal mail. For regular incoming personal correspondence, the county uses a postcard policy.
Address personal inmate correspondence to:
Inmate’s Full Name
Cherokee County Detention Center
315 East Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane
Gaffney, SC 29340
Under the published county rules, incoming personal postcards should:
- be rectangular;
- measure at least 3.5 × 5 inches and no more than 4.25 × 6 inches;
- be written in blue or black ink;
- include the sender’s complete return name and address; and
- comply with facility security rules.
Do not send ordinary greeting cards, items with glued or taped material, stickers or address labels, plastic wrapping, glitter, cloth, string, scents, lipstick, altered postcards, prohibited images or coded messages. Standard personal photographs are not accepted separately; the county states that pictures must be in an acceptable postcard format.
Privileged legal and qualifying government mail is treated differently from ordinary personal correspondence.
Check the official mail regulations before sending anything.
Putting Money on an Inmate Account
The county’s posted visitation policy states that visitors may bring cash or money orders for deposit into an inmate’s commissary account and that a public commissary kiosk is available in the main lobby of the Detention Center.
Deposit providers, accepted payment methods and limits can change. Before sending money through a third-party website, call 864-487-2529 and confirm the currently approved method for the inmate.
Inmate Phone Calls
Several third-party jail directories currently give conflicting information about the telephone provider used by the Cherokee County Detention Center. The county detention page reviewed for this guide does not publish a current inmate-phone vendor or rate schedule.
For that reason, do not fund an account simply because an unofficial directory names a particular phone company. Call the Detention Center at 864-487-2529 and confirm the current provider first.
Need an Older Booking or Arrest Record?
The live inmate roster is designed for current custody and may not be the best source for an older arrest. For an older criminal case, start with the Cherokee County court record. If you need a specific government record that is not available online, use Cherokee County’s public-record/FOIA information to identify the agency that maintains it.
