Find a Nevada County Jail Inmate and Verify Current Custody
If you are trying to locate someone arrested in Nevada City, Grass Valley, Truckee or elsewhere in Nevada County, California, start with the Nevada County Sheriff’s official incarcerated-person search. The county operates the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City and the smaller Truckee Jail, which is primarily a booking and temporary-holding facility.
Information reviewed October 28, 2026. Custody, housing, bail and court status can change quickly, so use the live county record before taking action.
Make Sure You Are Searching Nevada County, California
Nevada County is a California county. It is not the State of Nevada. This distinction matters because Nevada state prisons and county jails in Las Vegas, Reno and other Nevada communities use completely different custody systems.
The person was arrested in Nevada County, California, including the Nevada City, Grass Valley or Truckee area, and may be in county custody.
The person is serving a California state-prison sentence, is in federal custody, or was arrested in the State of Nevada rather than Nevada County, California.
How to Run a Nevada County Jail Inmate Search
Use Nevada County’s official search page instead of beginning with a commercial people-search directory.
Look for the person’s legal name and carefully confirm that you have the correct individual.
Wayne Brown Correctional Facility is the main Nevada County jail. Truckee Jail is used for booking and short-term holding, and long-term detainees are generally transported to Wayne Brown.
Keep the correct spelling of the inmate’s name, housing information and any court or custody details shown. Nevada County states that jail staff do not provide an incarcerated person’s booking number to the public.
Once custody is confirmed, use the sections below for visitation, mail, account deposits, bail, release information and criminal case lookup.
Current custody vs. recent bookings
| What you need | Best place to check | What it answers |

If the Person Does Not Appear in the Inmate Search
A blank search does not always mean the person was never arrested. Work through these possibilities in order:
- Very recent arrest: booking, identification, medical screening or transportation may still be underway.
- Name mismatch: verify the person’s full legal name, spelling, suffix and other identifying details.
- Temporary Truckee booking: a person arrested around Truckee may be processed there and later transported to Wayne Brown.
- Already released: check the Sheriff’s Jail Media Report for recent booking history and then search the court case.
- Transferred to another jurisdiction: a warrant, detainer or outside-county case can result in transfer.
- Transferred to California state prison: use CDCR’s incarcerated-person search.
- Federal custody: use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator when the case is federal.
If the arrest is recent and the online information remains unclear, call Nevada County Corrections at 530-265-1291.

How to Send Mail to a Nevada County Jail Inmate
Nevada County changed its personal-mail process in 2025. Ordinary non-privileged mail for Wayne Brown and Truckee is now processed through Pigeonly rather than mailed directly to the jail.
Wayne Brown Correctional Facility: 2100
PO Box 96777
Las Vegas, NV 89193
Truckee Substation Jail: 2101
PO Box 96777
Las Vegas, NV 89193
All mail must include a return address. Non-privileged mail is opened and scanned by the processing provider, sent electronically to the Sheriff’s Office for screening, printed and forwarded to the facility. Nevada County says originals are temporarily held and later destroyed unless the sender requests their return before destruction.
Among the published restrictions, envelopes may not exceed 4 x 9.5 inches, letters must be on paper no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches, and prohibited material includes contraband, Polaroid photographs, certain explicit content, stains or unidentified marks, and writing or drawings made with crayons, markers or colored pencils.
Publisher, official-document and legal mail
Printed material sent directly by a publisher or commercial dealer—including approved paperback books, magazines, newspapers and periodicals—uses the facility’s direct mailing route rather than the Pigeonly personal-mail address.
Incarcerated Person Name
PO Box 928
Nevada City, CA 95959
Attorneys follow Nevada County’s separate privileged/legal-mail verification process. Because mail rules can change and rejected items may be returned, verify the current procedure before sending valuable documents or publications.

What happens during release processing
Before release, jail staff verify the person’s identity, release paperwork, outstanding warrants or detainers, applicable medical clearance, property and funds. The incarcerated person signs required paperwork, changes into civilian clothing and may make up to three free telephone calls to arrange a safe release.
| Release type | Nevada County procedure |
|---|---|
| Sentence completed | People completing a sentence are generally processed out between 8:00 and 10:00 AM on the scheduled release morning. |
| Court-ordered release | After return from court, release normally takes about two to four hours, although court paperwork can cause delays. |
| Own recognizance / cite release | Typically occurs between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. |
| Bail bond or cash bail | Accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Bonded individuals are generally released between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. |
| Night release | Nevada County states that people will not be released between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM without a verified ride. |
A person who was under the influence of alcohol or drugs may remain in custody until staff determine that a safe release is possible. Medical or structured-release needs can also change the normal timing.
