Find an Inmate in Monroe County, New York
This guide covers Monroe County, New York, including the Monroe County Jail in Rochester. The Sheriff does not use a typical name-search box. Instead, it publishes an official Inmate Roster, Census, Received Report and Released Report as downloadable records.
For the fastest search, open the roster and use your browser’s Find command to search the person’s last name. Then use the Census if you need charges, bail, bond, court or next-court-date information.
Monroe County Jail Quick Information

How to Search the Monroe County Jail Roster
- Open the official inmate information page. Go to the Monroe County Sheriff Incarcerated Individual Information page.

Which Official Report Should You Use?
| Report | Best for | Information available |
|---|---|---|
| Inmate Roster | Quick current-custody check | MCJ number, last name, first name and date of entry |
| Inmate Census | Detailed case and custody lookup | Custody/booking information, classification, bail, bond, court, judge, court date, arresting agency and charges when listed |
| Received Report | Recent bookings | Jail ID, name, date of birth, booking date/time and listed charges |
| Released Report | Recent releases | Release date/time, jail ID, name and related case information |
If the Person Was Just Arrested
Start with the Received Report. It is more useful for a recent arrest because it identifies newly received individuals and shows booking date/time.
If the name still does not appear, allow time for transportation, intake, medical screening and booking. You can also call 585-753-4300 with the person’s full legal name and, if known, date of birth.
A missing name does not necessarily mean the person was never arrested. They may have been released, transferred, held by another agency, sent to state custody or not yet entered into the latest weekday report.
How to Read the Census
The Census is the better document when you need more than confirmation that someone is in custody. Depending on the case, it can show:
- Jail identification number
- Custody and booking date
- Custody classification
- Bail and bond amounts
- Court handling the matter
- Judge
- Scheduled court date
- Arresting agency
- Charge code and description
Because one incarcerated person can have multiple charges or court matters, read all lines attached to that person’s record before assuming the first charge is the only pending case.
Check Criminal Court Information
The jail Census is useful for immediate custody information, but the court record is better for tracking the criminal case after arraignment or release.
- Write down the person’s full name, court and case information shown in the Census.
- Open the New York State Unified Court System WebCriminal portal.
- Search by defendant name or available case identifier.
- Compare the court, charge and upcoming appearance with the jail record.
A jail booking is not a conviction. Charges and custody status can change as the case moves through court.
Bail and Bond Information
Monroe County provides an online bail process for eligible cases. Before paying, the Sheriff’s Office tells users to confirm the information by calling 585-753-4182.
You may need:
- Defendant’s full name
- Date of birth
- Jail ID number
- Court and judge
- Case number
- Charges
- Exact cash-bail amount
Use the official Monroe County bail page to choose the appropriate Town/Village Court, County Court or Family Court payment option.
Monroe County Jail Visitation
Social visits are generally scheduled one week ahead. The published visit times are:
| Days | Visit times |
|---|---|
| Monday-Friday | 8:15 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. |
Each incarcerated individual at the Monroe County Jail or Andrew P. Meloni: STAR Academy may generally receive two one-hour social visits per week. Visitors should arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
Schedule through the official visit-request form or call 585-753-4000.
Visitor identification and rules
- Bring valid government-issued photo identification.
- Visitors are screened before entering.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early.
- Dress-code restrictions apply.
- Most jewelry and numerous loose personal items are prohibited.
- Visitors under 18 need additional identification and parental-permission documentation.
- A minor’s raised-seal birth certificate may be required.
- Visitors ages 16-17 must also have an accepted photo ID.
The Sheriff’s FAQ also provides for a 30-minute non-contact first visit within 24 hours of admission when requested by the newly admitted incarcerated individual.
Video visitation
Video visits are handled through Securus. The person scheduling a video visit must be at least 18, register with valid identification and remain present throughout the session. General-population incarcerated individuals are permitted two 30-minute video visits per week under the published rules.
Sending Money and Commissary
Monroe County uses Access Corrections for inmate deposits. Families have three main options:
- Online/mobile: Access Corrections
- Phone: 1-866-345-1884, available 24/7
- Lobby kiosk: kiosks are available at the Monroe County Jail and STAR Academy
The official property instructions state that the jail lobby kiosk can accept deposits 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The staffed money drop-off window is open Friday only, 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Property, Clothing and Publications
The Sheriff’s official property instructions say the public property area is open Tuesday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.. A person completing a property transaction must be at least 18 and present acceptable identification.
The property window can accept, when applicable:
- One set of trial clothing when there is notice of a scheduled trial
- Medication, prescription eyeglasses or medical equipment authorized by the jail’s medical provider
- Legal paperwork received from attorneys
Ordinary packages cannot simply be handed in at the property window. Published items generally need to come through an approved commercial source and meet jail restrictions.
Books and magazines
Printed materials must generally be new, softcover and shipped commercially from a bookstore, publisher or distributor. The shipment should include the purchaser’s name/return address and the incarcerated individual’s ID number.
The Sheriff’s instructions prohibit third-party marketplace sellers. They specifically distinguish items sold by and shipped by Amazon itself from third-party Amazon sellers, so check the seller and shipper before ordering.
Photographs and Mail
The Jail Bureau states that photographs received through ordinary incarcerated-individual mail are photocopied. The copy is provided to the incarcerated individual and the original is stored with their property.
The Sheriff also identifies services such as Free Prints, Walmart, Inmate Photos and Shutterfly for certain photo deliveries that can be distributed as photographs after inspection.
Because mailing formats and screening rules can change, confirm the current address format and required MCJ number with the Jail Bureau before mailing important documents or property.
If the Inmate Was Released or Transferred

- Check the Released Report.

- If the person received a state sentence or was transferred to state custody, use the New York State DOCCS incarcerated-person lookup.
