Find a Louisville Metro Inmate and Check the Current Booking
If someone was arrested in Louisville or elsewhere in Jefferson County, start with the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections (LMDC) inmate search. LMDC, not the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, is the main local corrections agency for adult Louisville Metro jail custody.
Fastest route: search the official current-inmate system, confirm the correct person, save the inmate’s CIN or booking identifier, and then use that information for bond, court, visitation, mail, money or release questions.
How to Search the Louisville Jail Roster
You do not need to know the exact housing unit before starting. Louisville Metro Government maintains an official inmate-search page for people in LMDC custody.
- Open the official Louisville Metro inmate-search page. Use the government link above rather than a paid people-search site.
- Search the person’s legal name. Start with the spelling used on government identification. If a full-name search fails, retry with fewer name details.
- Open the matching inmate record. Compare identifying and booking information carefully, especially when several people have similar names.
- Save the inmate identifier. LMDC uses a CIN/inmate number for several services, including adding money and identifying mail.
- Check the current custody or booking information. Use the record to determine whether the person is still in LMDC custody and to collect any available charge, bond or court references.
- Verify anything time-sensitive. For same-day release, bond, transportation or an unclear booking, call LMDC at 502-574-8477.
What information should you save?
| Information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Full booking name | Helps prevent a same-name mistake when checking court or custody records. |
| CIN / inmate identifier | Useful for inmate accounts, mail and communications with LMDC. |
| Booking or custody status | Shows whether the person appears to remain in local jail custody. |
| Listed charges | Useful for locating the related court case, but allegations are not convictions. |
| Bond information | Starting point only; verify the active bond and eligibility before paying. |
| Court or case reference | Use it in Kentucky’s public court-record system for hearings and case activity. |
If You Cannot Find the Person
A failed Louisville jail inmate search often means the wrong custody system is being checked or the booking has not finished yet. Work through these possibilities in order.
| Possible reason | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Arrest happened very recently | Allow time for booking, retry LMDC search, then call 502-574-8477 if the situation is urgent. |
| Name does not match | Try the legal surname, alternate spelling, maiden/former surname or fewer search details. |
| Person was released | Check Kentucky VINE or the related court case for later custody/case information. |
| Transferred to Kentucky state custody | Use Kentucky Offender Online Lookup (KOOL). |
| Arrest happened across the river in Indiana | Use the Indiana jail inmate search guide instead of LMDC. |
| Person is in another Kentucky county | Use that county’s jail system. For example, see our Warren County, KY jail inmate search guide. |
| Custody may be in Ohio | Use our Ohio jail inmate search guide to choose the correct county or state system. |
| Federal custody is possible | Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator or confirm the arresting federal agency. |

Check Charges, Court Dates and the Criminal Case
The LMDC roster answers a custody question. The Kentucky Court of Justice record is the better source for the criminal case, filed charges, scheduled court activity and eventual disposition.
- Find the correct LMDC inmate and write down the full legal name and any case number shown.
- Open the KYeCourts public-record guest search.
- Complete the guest-access verification and continue to the public search.
- Search by case number when you have one. Otherwise search by the defendant’s name.
- Confirm that the case belongs to Jefferson County and matches the person you found in the jail record.
- Review available case activity, charges and court events. For an official or unavailable document, contact the Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk.

Bond and Release in Louisville
LMDC states that in-person inmate bond payments can be accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Hall of Justice, 600 W. Jefferson Street.
Before going to pay a bond
- Confirm the inmate’s identity and current custody status.
- Verify the current bond amount, case and bond type.
- Check whether another case, hold or court order can affect release.
- The person posting bond must appear in person, be at least 18 and present valid government-issued photo identification.
- LMDC currently lists cash, certified check, some debit cards and accepted credit cards as payment methods. Card service charges can apply.
For case-specific bond questions, LMDC directs users to the District Court Clerk at 502-595-4428 or 502-595-3060.
LMDC self-bond option
LMDC also describes a limited process in which funds placed in an eligible inmate’s account can be allocated by the inmate toward a self-bond. The current published conditions include Kentucky residency with a valid address in the system, a District Court case rather than a Circuit Court case, no DUI case, no qualifying domestic-violence case and no outstanding LMDC booking-fee balance. LMDC currently lists a fee of $70 for every $1,000 of bond for this option.
How long does release take?
LMDC does not publish one guaranteed release time. Posting bond or receiving a release order does not necessarily mean the person can immediately leave the facility. Processing, verification, another hold, another case, transportation or administrative steps can affect the timing. For a same-day pickup, confirm the person’s actual release status with LMDC before driving to the jail.
Louisville Metro Corrections Visitation
LMDC currently offers both on-site and remote visitation through Smart Communications. The current Louisville Metro visitation page directs visitors to create an account through SmartInmate.
- Create an account at SmartInmate.com.
- Request/complete the visitor approval process. LMDC says approval may take up to 24 hours.
- After approval, schedule the visit at least 24 hours in advance.
- For a free on-site visit, report to the Hall of Justice at 600 W. Jefferson Street.
- Bring valid photo identification. The visitation kiosks are in the basement.
- Check the inmate’s current housing/classification before the visit because location and availability can depend on custody status.
LMDC’s published visitation schedule currently lists sessions seven days a week in morning, midday and evening blocks, but schedules and housing restrictions can change. Use the live visitation page or booking system before traveling.
Phone Calls, Mail, Inmate Money and Care Packages
Inmate phone calls
LMDC currently states that people in custody receive two free 15-minute phone calls per day. Inmates cannot receive normal incoming calls or messages through the jail. For an emergency situation, LMDC directs family or friends to Classification at 502-574-2120.
Calling services are provided through Smart Communications. Check the current provider screen before depositing calling funds because rates and service options can change.
How to send regular postal mail
LMDC uses an off-site Smart Communications MailGuard process for ordinary personal correspondence. Regular letters, postcards and greeting cards are scanned and made available to the inmate electronically.

- The inmate’s name and booking/ID number must be clearly shown on the outside of the envelope or postcard.
- MailGuard Tracker can show delivery status and rejected-mail notifications.
- Do not send ordinary personal mail to the jail street address simply because it appears on an older website.
- Legal mail, court documents, bank statements and publications follow different handling instructions and should be checked against current LMDC guidance before mailing.

| Care package | LMDC links its approved iCare option from the Inmate Accounts page. |
LMDC vs. KOOL vs. VINE: Use the Right Search
These systems do different jobs. Searching all of them at once is usually unnecessary.
| System | Best use | Not a substitute for |
|---|---|---|
| LMDC Inmate Search | Current Louisville/Jefferson County adult jail custody and available booking information. | A complete criminal-history report. |
| KYeCourts | Public Kentucky court case information, charges, hearings and docket activity. | Live jail housing status. |
| Kentucky KOOL | People under Kentucky Department of Corrections jurisdiction or supervision. | A newly booked Louisville jail roster. |
| Kentucky VINE | Custody information and supported release/transfer notifications. | An emergency notification system or guaranteed real-time release confirmation. |
The Kentucky Department of Corrections states that KOOL data is updated during the day and warns that offender information newer than 120 days may not yet be finalized. A fresh Louisville arrest should therefore normally be checked through LMDC first.
Kentucky VINE can provide notifications about supported custody-status changes such as release or transfer. Kentucky DOC lists 1-800-511-1670 for VINE access and registration.
Public Defender and Other Practical Help
If the person qualifies for appointed criminal-defense counsel, the current Louisville–Jefferson County public defender office is part of the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy.

For medical concerns involving an inmate, LMDC lists its Medical Department at 502-574-2145. For classification questions or an emergency communication situation involving someone in custody, use 502-574-2120.
