Find a Jacksonville Jail Inmate and Check Current Booking Details
If you are searching for someone arrested in Jacksonville or elsewhere in Duval County, the best starting point is the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) Inmate Information Search. JSO operates Duval County’s local correctional system, and its public search covers both current inmates and historical records for people who have been released.
The search can help you confirm custody, identify the correct booking, review available charges and bond information, find the housing location, and obtain the inmate number needed for mail, money and other jail services.
Important: “Jax Jail,” “Jacksonville Jail” and “Duval County Jail” searches normally refer to facilities operated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. An arrest record or jail booking does not by itself establish that a person was convicted.
How to Use the Jax Jail Inmate Search
- Open the official search. Go directly to inmatesearch.jaxsheriff.org. Complete any security or CAPTCHA check that appears.
- Start with the inmate’s last name. Use the legal name most likely given during booking. If you know the first name, add it to narrow the results.
- Use an identifying number when available. A Jail Number or JSO ID is more reliable than a common name because it identifies a specific record.
- Choose the appropriate custody search. If you only want someone currently incarcerated, use the active-inmate option when the portal presents it. JSO also maintains historical information for released inmates.
- Open the matching record. Do not rely only on the name. Compare age or physical description, booking information, arrest date, charges and other identifiers shown.
- Save the Jail Number or booking identifier. You may need it for inmate mail, deposits, calls, visitation or questions to the facility.
What You Can Find in a JSO Inmate Record
JSO describes its inmate tool as a source for current and historical information about incarcerated and released inmates. Available records can include a booking photograph and charge information. Depending on the record and custody stage, additional details may appear.
| Record detail | How it helps |
|---|---|
| Jail Number / JSO ID | Helps identify the correct inmate and is useful when dealing with jail services. |
| Custody status | Shows whether the person is currently incarcerated or has been released. |
| Housing location | Identifies where the person is housed when the information is available. |
| Admission / booking information | Helps confirm when the person entered JSO custody. |
| Charges | Lists allegations associated with the booking. Charges are not the same as convictions. |
| Bond / payment information | May show bond status or whether payment is required for release. |
| Case number | Can be used to continue the search in Duval County court records. |
| Next court date | May appear when court information has been associated with the booking. |
| Release information | Historical records can show release status or release details when available. |
Jail information can change after a court appearance, bond review, transfer or release. Treat the live JSO record as a current custody source and use the Clerk of Courts for the judicial case.
Jacksonville and Duval County Correctional Facilities
Someone arrested in Jacksonville may not remain at the same location throughout the case. JSO operates multiple correctional and transition facilities, so always check the current housing information before traveling or sending legal mail.

The John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility is the downtown jail commonly meant when people search for “Jax Jail.” JSO states that it houses pretrial detainees as well as certain federal, juvenile, state and county-sentenced inmates.
The Community Transition Center houses county-sentenced men and women participating in programs such as work furlough and substance-abuse treatment, along with inmate workers. Montgomery Correctional Center houses county-sentenced and some other sentenced inmates.
If the Person Was Just Arrested
A person may not appear online immediately after an arrest. JSO explains that intake includes property inventory, booking, medical screening, identification clearance and cell assignment. Those steps must be completed before normal release or visitation processing can move forward.
If the arrest happened very recently:
- Confirm the arrest occurred in Jacksonville or Duval County.
- Search using only the last name first.
- Try spelling variations or a legal surname rather than a nickname.
- Recheck the official portal after intake has had time to process.
- If the search still does not resolve the issue, call jail/inmate information at 904-630-5760.
How Bond Works at Jax Jail
Before paying anything, locate the inmate through JSO and review every listed charge. A person may have multiple cases, holds or no-bond conditions that affect release.
Cash bond
JSO states that the full cash-bond amount can be taken to the public reception area of the jail. Its current corrections guidance lists cash, a verified certified or cashier’s check drawn on a local bank, or a United States Postal Money Order payable to the Office of the Sheriff as accepted methods for a cash bond.
Surety bond
A licensed bonding agency can arrange a surety bond. JSO personnel cannot recommend a particular bail-bond company.
Civil purge amount
If custody is connected to a civil matter such as a Writ of Attachment, a judge may set a purge amount. JSO states that purge payments are generally handled through the Domestic Relations Department at the courthouse during normal business hours and may be paid at the jail after hours.
How to Check the Duval County Criminal Court Case
The jail search and court record answer different questions. Use JSO to confirm custody and booking information. Use the Duval County Clerk of Courts CORE portal when you need the filed criminal case, docket activity, court orders or available court documents.
- Find the correct inmate in the JSO portal.
- Write down the case number shown with the relevant charge when available.
- Open the Duval Clerk Court Records page.
- Follow the link to CORE.
- Search using the case number or the defendant’s identifying information.
- Match the case carefully and review available docket entries, filings and court dates.
The Clerk states that general public users can view non-confidential records permitted under Florida court-access rules. Some documents may be unavailable, confidential or require review before they can be displayed.

Jax Jail Visitation: Video Visits Only
JSO’s current corrections guidance states that regular inmate visitation is by video rather than face-to-face visitation. Visitors use GettingOut for account verification, messaging access and video visitation.
Remote video visits
- Create an account at GettingOut.
- Upload the identification requested by the provider.
- Complete account verification.
- Once approved, the account can receive inmate-initiated video visits and use supported messaging features.

How to Add Money to an Inmate Account
Commissary account
JSO uses Access Secure Deposits for inmate commissary funds. The agency lists these options:
- Online through InmateDeposits.com.
- By telephone at 1-866-345-1884.
- Cash deposits through approved kiosks in the lobby of the jail, prison and Community Transition Center.
JSO says correctional staff do not accept cash, cashier’s checks or money orders sent through the mail or handed to staff for deposit into an inmate account.
Phone account
JSO’s facility instructions direct users who want to fund an inmate phone account to its approved telephone service and list 1-877-650-4249 for assistance. Because correctional communications providers can change, confirm the provider through the current JSO Corrections Facility Information page before entering payment information.
How to Send Mail to a Jacksonville Jail Inmate
JSO changed its routine personal-mail process effective October 1, 2024. Ordinary personal mail sent through USPS is routed through a mail-processing center, scanned and made available to the inmate through the tablet system.
Routine personal mail
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office – Duval, FLInmate’s Name, 10-digit Booking Number
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
Include the sender’s full name and return address. JSO states that boxes are not accepted and envelopes cannot exceed 8½ × 11 inches.
Legal mail and authorized publications
Legal mail is handled differently and should be sent directly to the facility where the inmate is housed. Authorized newspaper, magazine and periodical subscriptions and qualifying paperback books also follow the direct-facility process.
For a person housed at the downtown jail:
Inmate’s Name & Jail NumberPretrial Detention Facility
500 E. Adams Street
Jacksonville, FL 32202
Reading-material restrictions
- Periodicals must be subscriptions in the inmate’s name.
- JSO currently lists paperback books shipped directly from Amazon, Books-A-Million or Barnes & Noble as authorized.
- Hardback books are prohibited.
- Inmates are limited to two paperback books and four periodicals/publications in their possession.
- Photographs, facsimiles and computer-generated reading material downloaded from the internet are listed as unauthorized in JSO’s current mail rules.
Because mail rules are easy to violate accidentally, verify the current JSO mail guidance before sending anything valuable or time-sensitive.
Why an Inmate May Not Appear in the Jax Jail Search
- The arrest is very recent and intake is not complete.
- The name is spelled differently in the booking record.
- The person used a legal surname, alias or different middle-name format.
- The person has already bonded out or otherwise been released.
- The inmate was transferred to another JSO correctional facility.
- The person was transferred into Florida Department of Corrections custody after sentencing.
- The person is in federal custody rather than Duval County custody.
- The arrest happened in another Florida county.
- The court case exists, but the defendant is not currently incarcerated.
County jail vs. state prison vs. federal custody
A person can disappear from the JSO active-inmate search while remaining incarcerated elsewhere. If the person received a Florida state-prison sentence, continue with the Florida Department of Corrections offender search. Federal defendants may be held under a federal agency or later appear in the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.

Use the Record Carefully
A jail roster is primarily a custody and booking resource. An arrest, mugshot or charge does not prove guilt, and a listed charge may later be dismissed, amended or resolved differently. When the final outcome matters for a legal, employment, licensing or other important decision, verify the court record through the Duval County Clerk of Courts rather than relying only on the jail entry.
If you need a record that is not available through the inmate search, JSO also accepts public-record requests. The agency currently directs online requests through its public-record process and lists the Public Records Unit at 904-630-2209.

Start With JSO, Then Use the Court Record When Needed
For a Jax Jail inmate search, start with the official JSO portal, confirm the correct person and save the Jail Number or booking information. From there you can check bond, determine the housing facility, prepare mail, arrange visitation or fund an approved inmate service. When you need the actual criminal case or final disposition, continue to the Duval County Clerk’s CORE system rather than relying only on a jail booking record.
Jail procedures, providers, fees and operational rules can change. Verify time-sensitive actions such as bond payments, visitation appointments, money deposits and inmate mail with the current official JSO instructions before completing a transaction.
