Find an Ingham County Jail Inmate and Verify Current Custody
For an Ingham County Jail inmate search, start with the county-operated Ingham County Inmate Locator. The official search allows you to look for a person by name or inmate number. Use it first if someone was recently arrested in Lansing, Mason, East Lansing or another community in Ingham County and you need to confirm whether the person is currently in county jail custody.
How to Search the Ingham County Jail Roster
The Sheriff’s Office operates a dedicated inmate locator rather than requiring you to search a general county website. The current locator provides separate options for searching by a person’s name or inmate number.
- Open the official Ingham County Inmate Locator.
- Select Name if you know the person’s first or last name, or choose Inmate Number if you already have the county inmate number.
- For a name search, enter the person’s legal last name and first name as accurately as possible. Avoid nicknames unless the legal name is unknown.
- Submit the search and compare the returned inmate record with the person you are trying to locate. Do not rely on the name alone when two people have similar names.
- Use the current custody record as your starting point, then verify charges, hearings, bond or case status with the appropriate court when those details matter.
What the Inmate Search Is Best Used For
The jail locator is primarily a current custody tool. It is the right first step when you want to know whether someone is presently associated with the Ingham County jail system. It should not be treated as a complete criminal-history report or as proof that a person committed an offense.
| You need to know | Best place to start |
|---|---|
| Is the person currently in Ingham County Jail? | Ingham County Inmate Locator |
| Current criminal case or hearing information | Appropriate Ingham County district or circuit court |
| Michigan state prisoner, parolee or probationer | Michigan DOC OTIS |
| Older sheriff incident or arrest-related record | Ingham County Sheriff’s Central Records / FOIA |
| Mail, visitation, phone or inmate account instructions | Ingham County Corrections page and approved vendor |
A booking or jail entry only documents custody or an allegation at a particular point in time. Charges can be amended or dismissed, bond can change after a hearing, and a person can be released or transferred after the roster was checked.
If You Cannot Find the Person
Most failed searches have a practical explanation. Work through these possibilities before assuming the person is not in custody.
- Booking is still being processed: search again after additional processing time.
- Name mismatch: try the full legal surname, a different spelling, hyphenated name, former surname or suffix.
- The person was released: a current-custody system may no longer show the same information after release.
- The person was transferred: sentenced prisoners may move into Michigan Department of Corrections custody.
- The arrest occurred elsewhere: an arrest near a county line or by another jurisdiction may result in booking in another jail.
- You are searching the wrong type of system: county jail custody and Michigan state-prison custody are separate systems.
If state custody is possible, use our Michigan jail and inmate lookup guide to determine whether you need a county roster, MDOC OTIS, MiCOURT or another official database.
If someone was first held temporarily by a municipal police agency, our city jail inmate search guide explains why a person may move from a police holding facility to a county jail after arrest.
Ingham County Jail Address, Phone and Lobby Information
The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office moved jail operations into a new correctional facility in early 2023 within the Justice Complex area in Mason.
| Jail information phone | 517-676-2431, Option 3 |
|---|---|
| Lobby hours published by the county | Monday–Thursday: 7:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. Friday: 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. |
| Visitor entrance | Door 2 |
| Driving reference | Cedar Street exit 66 from US-127; proceed east toward Curtis Street |
The county also publishes holiday closures for the public visitation lobby, including major county holidays. If you are traveling to Mason specifically for a visit or jail transaction, confirm the current schedule first.
How to Check Charges, Court Dates and Case Status
A jail roster answers the custody question. A court record is the better source for arraignments, hearings, case numbers, filings and later case activity.
Ingham County is unusual enough that users should pay attention to where the case began:
| Location / case level | Likely court | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| City of Lansing | 54-A District Court | District-level criminal and traffic cases arising in Lansing |
| City of East Lansing | 54-B District Court | District-level cases arising in East Lansing |
| Most of Ingham County outside Lansing and East Lansing | 55th District Court | Arraignments, misdemeanors and preliminary felony proceedings within its jurisdiction |
| Felony case after transfer to circuit court | 30th Judicial Circuit Court | Felony criminal matters and circuit-level case records |
Micro-step: find the court record
- First identify the correct inmate in the jail locator.
- Note the arresting location, case reference or charge information if available.
- Determine whether the matter belongs to Lansing, East Lansing, the 55th District Court area or the 30th Circuit Court.
- Use the court’s official record-search service or Michigan MiCOURT Case Search where applicable.
- For a certified record or a detail not shown online, contact the clerk of the court handling the case.
The 55th District Court states that it covers Ingham County except the cities of Lansing and East Lansing. Its general information number is 517-676-8400. The 30th Circuit Court Clerk can be reached at 517-483-6500.
Bond and Release Information
Do not rely on an old search result, screenshot or third-party jail page when money is involved. Bond amount, bond type and release conditions can change after arraignment or another hearing.
- Confirm the inmate is still in custody.
- Confirm the exact current bond amount and type.
- Confirm which court has jurisdiction.
- Ask the jail or court which payment methods are currently accepted.
- If a surety bond is needed, use the current county-approved list rather than a random advertisement.
Ingham County’s 30th Circuit Court maintains an official list of approved bond companies for criminal cases involving the 30th Circuit Court and the county’s district courts. The county currently provides a Bond Company Information page with the applicable annual list.
Visiting an Inmate
The current Ingham County Corrections page directs family and friends to its visitation information and to SmartJailMail / Smart Communications for services such as video visits, inmate phone access and electronic messaging.
Because visitation session times, account requirements and vendor rules can change, use this sequence:
- Confirm the inmate is still housed at Ingham County Jail.
- Have the inmate’s full name and inmate number ready.
- Review the current county Corrections page.
- Create or access the required account through SmartJailMail when directed.
- Check the available visit type and time before traveling.
The county lists its public jail lobby hours as Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. These lobby hours are not automatically the same thing as a guaranteed visitation appointment window.
How to Send Mail to an Inmate
Ingham County changed to a digital personal-mail system on April 1, 2023. Personal correspondence is sent to a mail processing center and then delivered digitally to the inmate.
Personal mail address
C/O Mail Processing Center
P.O. Box 9175
Seminole, FL 33775-9175
Include the correct inmate name and inmate number. The county states that this system allows friends and family to send full letters and greeting cards through the mail-processing service.
Privileged legal mail
LEGAL MAIL – PRIVILEGED
630 N. Cedar Street
Mason, MI 48854
The Sheriff’s Office states that legal mail is handled separately. Attorneys should follow the current legal-mail instructions rather than sending privileged documents to the Florida personal-mail processing address.
Inmate Money, Commissary, Phone and Messages
The county’s current Corrections page links eXpressAccount for inmate account deposits and Canteen Services for commissary information. Verify the inmate identity before sending money because deposits to the wrong account can be difficult to correct.
A county visitor packet dated June 2023 stated that inmates could purchase items such as hygiene products, food and writing materials through commissary, and that friends and family could deposit funds through eXpressAccount. Because spending limits, delivery days and vendor fees can change, treat current vendor screens and the Sheriff’s current Corrections page as the final authority when making a transaction.
Before sending money
- Confirm the inmate’s full booking name.
- Confirm the inmate number.
- Confirm the person is still housed in Ingham County.
- Select the correct service: inmate account, commissary, phone/video credit or another service.
- Review fees before completing payment.
Older Arrest Records, Reports and FOIA Requests
The inmate locator is intended for current inmate information, not a permanent archive of every past arrest. If the person has already been released and you need an older Sheriff’s Office record, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Central Records Division handles local arrest-record checks, department incident reports and Freedom of Information Act requests.
The Central Records office publishes the phone number 517-676-8224.
Ingham County also operates an online FOIA information center. The county specifically notes that court records are handled by the courts rather than through the county FOIA process, so use the court clerk when the record you need is a court filing or case document.
County Jail vs. Michigan State Prison
Do not use Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS as your first search for someone who was just arrested locally. MDOC explains that OTIS does not include people held only in county jails or city lockups.
Use Michigan OTIS when the person has entered state correctional custody, is on parole or probation under MDOC supervision, or otherwise falls within the state system.
If you are checking another Michigan county, you can also review our Oakland County Jail inmate search guide for an example of how county systems differ even within the same state.
Best Search Order for Most Users
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Arrest happened today | Search the Ingham County locator first; retry later if intake is still processing. |
| You know the inmate number | Use the locator’s inmate-number search for a more precise match. |
| You need a court date | Identify the correct court, then use its official case search or MiCOURT. |
| You need bond information | Confirm current custody and verify the amount/type with the jail or court before paying. |
| The inmate disappeared from the county search | Check release, court activity and MDOC OTIS for a possible transfer. |
| You need an old sheriff record | Use Central Records or the county FOIA process. |
