Find a Detroit Jail Inmate Without Searching the Wrong System
If someone was arrested in Detroit, there is not one database that covers every stage of custody. For most people already booked into Wayne County jail custody, use the Wayne County Sheriff Inmate Inquiry. If the arrest happened very recently through Detroit Police and no county record appears yet, the Detroit Detention Center or DPD Prisoner Information Hotline may be the better first contact.

Which Detroit Custody Search Do You Need?

How to Search the Wayne County Jail Roster
- Open the official Wayne County Sheriff inmate-search page.
- Follow the link to Wayne County Sheriff Inmate Inquiry.
- Enter the person’s legal first and last name.
- If available, use the Subject Number or Booking Number because these identifiers reduce same-name mistakes.
- Keep the In Custody option selected when you only want currently detained people.
- Use the booking-date or housing-facility filters if the search returns too many results.
- Open the matching record and confirm the identity before using the information for bond, visitation, mail, deposits, or court research.
Search fields available in the inmate system
| Field | Best use |
|---|---|
| Name | Best starting point when you only know the inmate’s legal name. |
| Subject Number | Useful for identifying a specific person already known to the Wayne County system. |
| Booking Number | Best for finding a specific jail booking. |
| In Custody | Limits results to people shown as currently in custody. |
| Booking From / To | Helpful when you know approximately when the arrest or booking happened. |
| Housing Facility | Can narrow results by the location recorded by the jail system. |
For common names, do not assume the first result is correct. Compare the booking number, subject number, age or date of birth when displayed, booking date, and case information.
What You Can Learn From a Detroit Jail Booking Record
The exact fields depend on the record, but a Wayne County inmate entry can help you identify:
- Current custody status
- Booking number and booking date
- Subject number
- Housing information when available
- Listed criminal charges
- Bond information entered in the jail system
- Associated court or docket information
- Upcoming court dates when available
- Arresting agency or related booking data when populated
Detroit Detention Center and Very Recent Arrests
The Detroit Detention Center (DDC) is located at:
17601 Mound Road
Detroit, MI 48212
DDC phone: 313-596-2242
DPD Prisoner Information Hotline: 313-267-4601
This facility is especially relevant when you are trying to locate someone shortly after a Detroit Police arrest. If the person does not yet appear in the Wayne County inmate system, call prisoner information with the person’s full legal name and any known arrest details.
An important update for older search results: Michigan Department of Corrections records state that MDOC fully transitioned operation of the Detroit Detention Center to the Detroit Police Department on August 1, 2025. Older websites may still describe DDC as an MDOC-operated detention facility.
Current Wayne County Adult Detention Facility
Wayne County’s main adult detention operation is now part of the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center. The complex brings the Adult Detention Facility, Sheriff’s Office, criminal courts, prosecutor, and other criminal-justice services together at one location.
5301 Russell Street
Detroit, MI 48211
Inmate information: 313-224-0797
Adult Detention Facility: 313-202-7155
Wayne County Sheriff’s Office: 313-833-0864
How to Check Bond and Release Information
First open the inmate’s booking record and note the booking number, charges, court, and any bond details shown. Then use the court of jurisdiction when you need the current legally controlling bond information.
Wayne County bond rules
The Sheriff’s published bond procedure states that bonds are generally accepted at the Wayne County Jail 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a weekday exception. Between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, cash bonds and fines should be paid at the court that has jurisdiction over the case. The court receipt is then provided to the jail for processing.
- The person posting bond must be at least 18 years old.
- A new inmate cannot be released until jail registration processing is complete.
- Additional warrants or holds discovered during processing may delay release.
- The Sheriff lists cash and qualifying cashier’s or certified checks among accepted forms of payment.
- Major credit cards are also listed under the current bond procedure.
- Money orders and personal checks are not accepted for bond under the published policy.
Check current Wayne County bond instructions before making a payment.
How to Find a Detroit Court Date
Jail custody and court cases are separate records. Once you know the person’s name, booking information, or case number, use the court system to check the legal case.
36th District Court
For Detroit district-court cases, use the 36th District Court Case Inquiry System. It provides public access to qualifying case Registers of Actions and court schedules.
Detroit, MI 48226
Main phone: 313-965-2200
Arraignment questions: 313-965-5029
Public hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The Criminal Division states that misdemeanor arraignments are generally held on weekdays at 9:00 a.m., while felony arraignments are conducted by video at scheduled weekday times. For an arraignment inquiry, the arrested person’s name is enough for court staff to check the arraignment list.
Third Judicial Circuit felony cases
If a felony case has been bound over from district court, use the Third Judicial Circuit Odyssey Public Access.
The Third Circuit Criminal Division is located at the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center, 5301 Russell Street, Detroit. Odyssey is useful for public case research, but the court warns that name searches can match different people and that online information should not be treated as a certified background check.
Wayne County Jail Visitation
Wayne County uses video visitation for social visits. Current Sheriff instructions say a person age 17 or older with acceptable identification may receive one non-contact video visit per week for up to 30 minutes.
Published acceptable identification includes:
- State driver’s license
- State identification card
- Passport
- Federal military identification
- City of Detroit Municipal Identification Card
Current ADF social visitation is published in two daily blocks, 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.. The Sheriff’s detailed facility guidance also lists video-visit periods of 8:00-10:30 a.m., 12:30-2:00 p.m., and 6:00-9:00 p.m., with hours subject to the facility schedule.
The public Video Visitation Suite at the Criminal Justice Center is listed as open 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and weekends.
Check the official visitation page and schedule the available visit.
How to Send Mail to a Wayne County Inmate
Wayne County does not accept ordinary family-and-friend personal mail directly at the Adult Detention Facility. Personal letters, pictures, and drawings are processed for digital delivery to the inmate’s tablet.
Inmate First and Last Name (Booking Number)
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
The Sheriff’s current instructions say:
- Include the inmate’s full name and booking number.
- The sender must include a full name and physical return address.
- Do not send books or packages through the personal-mail process.
- Do not include checks or money orders.
- Personal mail sent directly to the Adult Detention Facility can be returned.
Attorney-client and privileged mail
Inmate First and Last Name (Booking Number)
5301 Russell Street
Detroit, MI 48211
Mail from attorneys, public officials, and qualifying government agencies follows the facility’s privileged-mail procedures and should not be sent through the ordinary family-and-friend mail address.
Put Money on a Wayne County Inmate Account
Before depositing money, search the inmate and write down the correct 10-digit booking number.
Wayne County’s current commissary instructions list:
- Wayne County facility number: 248211
- Online deposits through TouchPay
- TouchPay telephone deposits at 866-204-1603
- Lobby kiosks inside the Criminal Justice Center
- Approved care packages through the service linked by the Sheriff’s Office
Open the official Wayne County commissary instructions before sending funds.
Wayne County Inmate Phone Calls
Wayne County states that jail telephones support traditional collect calls, prepaid accounts, and inmate-funded calling options. Phone privileges can depend on the inmate’s security level and conduct.
The Sheriff also states that inmate telephone calls may be monitored or recorded. Attorney-client communications should therefore use the jail’s professional communication procedures rather than an ordinary inmate telephone call.
Check current inmate telephone information.
Property Release and Proof of Incarceration
Property release
The Adult Detention Facility lists inmate property-release hours as 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and weekends.
An inmate may authorize release of property to another person by signing the required Property Release Form. The person collecting the property must present valid identification. Wayne County states that unclaimed property or clothing may be disposed of after 90 days following release.
Proof of incarceration
A proof-of-incarceration request must include the person’s name, inmate number, and the period of incarceration. Wayne County currently states that requests are processed on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and lists a $10 service fee.
If the Detroit Inmate Search Shows No Record
Do these checks in order:
- Verify the spelling of the person’s legal first and last name.
- Try the search without a middle name or middle initial.
- If the arrest was very recent, contact DPD Prisoner Information at 313-267-4601.
- Search Wayne County again after booking and intake have had time to process.
- Use a booking-date range if you know approximately when the arrest occurred.
- Check 36th District Court if the person has already been arraigned in Detroit.
- Check Third Judicial Circuit if a felony case has moved beyond district court.
- If the person was sentenced to Michigan state prison, switch to MDOC OTIS.
- Consider whether another city, county, federal agency, or out-of-county warrant may control the person’s custody.
When to Use Michigan OTIS Instead
Use the Michigan Department of Corrections Offender Tracking Information System when the person has entered Michigan state correctional custody.
OTIS is not the Detroit or Wayne County jail roster. MDOC specifically states that OTIS does not contain people held only in county jails or city lockups, or people sentenced only to jail.

There is no single public roster covering every stage of a Detroit arrest. The Detroit Detention Center is important during early detention, while Wayne County’s inmate inquiry is the primary public lookup for people entered into county jail custody.
3. Why is a recently arrested person not showing in Wayne County?
The person may still be undergoing intake, identification, transport, or pre-arraignment processing. The person may also have been released or held by another agency. For a very recent Detroit arrest, contact DPD prisoner information before assuming the person is not in custody.

The system provides search options that include name, subject number, booking number, current-custody status, booking-date range, and housing facility.

Review the inmate’s Wayne County booking record for available bond information, then verify the current bond amount and conditions with the court of jurisdiction. Court orders can change after the jail record is entered.

Wayne County uses video visitation for social visits. Confirm the inmate is still in custody, then use the Sheriff’s official visitation page to register, choose an available visit, and review identification and conduct rules.

Personal mail is sent through the jail’s off-site digital-mail address using the inmate’s full name and booking number. Money deposits can be made through the Sheriff’s approved TouchPay options or facility kiosks. Verify the 10-digit booking number first.
10. What if the inmate was transferred to a Michigan state prison?
Use Michigan MDOC OTIS once the person is in state correctional custody. OTIS does not replace the Wayne County jail roster because county jail and city-lockup inmates are excluded from the state-prison search.
