Find a Denton County Jail Inmate and Verify Current Custody
If you are trying to find someone arrested in Denton County, Texas, start with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office jail records system. It is the county’s official route for checking local jail records, while bond records, court cases and inmate services are handled through separate county resources.

How to Search the Denton County Jail Roster
- Open the Sheriff’s Services page. Go to the official Denton County Sheriff services page rather than an advertisement or commercial people-search site.
- Select “Jail Records Search.” The county link opens its public records system for jail information.
- Search using the most accurate information you have. Start with the person’s correct legal name. If you already have booking or identifying information, use it when the portal provides that option.
- Check the match carefully. Do not rely on a name alone when several people have similar names. Compare the available booking, custody, charge or identifying information.
- Use the separate bond or court system when needed. A jail record answers a custody question. Bond details and the later criminal case may need to be checked separately.
Use the Right Denton County Record for Your Question
| You need | Best resource | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Current county jail record | Denton County Sheriff’s Office Jail Records Search | Open Sheriff Services and select Jail Records Search. |
| Bond information | Bond Records Search | Use the separate Bond Records Search on the same Sheriff’s Services page. |
| Criminal case or court calendar | Denton County Records | Use the Judicial & Law Enforcement Records Search. |
| Person held temporarily by Denton Police | Denton City Jail Custody Report | Use the City of Denton Jail page. |
| Texas state-prison custody | Texas Department of Criminal Justice | Search the TDCJ offender system. |
| Federal custody | Federal Bureau of Prisons | Use the BOP Inmate Locator. |
A jail booking should not be treated as proof of guilt or as the final outcome of a criminal case. Denton County itself warns that online records can be affected by data-entry limitations and that judgments and case information should be verified against the actual court record.
No Inmate Found? Check These Possibilities
- Booking is still being processed. Recheck later or call the jail.
- The person is still in a municipal jail. Someone arrested by Denton Police may first be held at the Denton City Jail before release or transfer.
- The person has already been released. A previous arrest does not mean the person remains in custody.
- The person was transferred. State-prison, federal or another-county custody requires a different locator.
- The name is entered differently. Try the full legal name and verify spelling.
- The information is restricted. Juvenile, sealed, protected or legally confidential records may not be available through a normal public search.
Denton City Jail and Denton County Jail Are Different Facilities
This distinction is especially important after a recent Denton Police arrest.
| Denton County Jail | City of Denton Jail | |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | Denton County Sheriff’s Office | Denton Police Department |
| Main purpose | County detention and longer local custody | Temporary municipal detention |
| Location | 127 N. Woodrow Lane, Denton | 601 E. Hickory St., Denton |
| City-jail lobby | Not applicable | 204 Railroad Ave. |
| City custody duration | Varies by case | City says inmates may be held up to 72 hours before release or transfer |
| Phone | 940-349-1700 | 940-349-8181, option 2 |
The City of Denton says its custody report is a real-time view of people currently booked into the municipal jail. The city facility does not offer regular inmate visitation; attorney visits are permitted. If a person is transferred to county custody, switch to the Denton County jail search.
How to Check Bond and Court Information
Do not stop at the jail roster when your real question is whether someone can be released or when they must appear in court.
- Find the correct inmate or booking through Jail Records Search.
- Return to the Sheriff’s Services page and select Bond Records Search.
- Compare the person and booking information carefully.
- For filed charges, court calendars, docket activity or case status, move to the county’s Judicial & Law Enforcement Records.
- If the bond or release status could have changed recently, confirm with Jail Information before paying money or traveling.
A warrant search is also separate from a jail search. Denton County Sheriff’s Office lists its Warrants unit at 940-349-1560 or 972-434-5505.

Regular personal mail
Inmate’s Name #Booking/ID Number
PO Box 9144
Seminole, FL 33775-9144
Regular letters, postcards and greeting cards sent to this address are processed by Smart Communications and made available electronically to the inmate. The inmate’s name and booking/ID number should be clearly shown.
Privileged or legal mail
Inmate’s Name #Booking/ID Number
127 North Woodrow Ln.
Denton, TX 76205
Do not send money through ordinary inmate mail. The current jail handbook says inmate-account money is not accepted by mail.
Books and publications
The current inmate handbook says books, magazines and newspapers require approval under jail rules and must come directly from a publisher or book distributor. It specifically states that packages from Amazon are not accepted for this purpose. Housing limits and security restrictions also apply, so verify the rule before ordering.
Read the current Denton County Jail Inmate Handbook.
Money, Commissary and Inmate Phone Service
Adding money to an inmate account
The Sheriff’s inmate-services page directs friends and family to CorrectPay for commissary-account deposits. Deposits may also be made through the lobby kiosk under current jail procedures.
- CorrectPay support/deposit phone: 1-855-836-3364.
- The current handbook says the jail lobby kiosk accepts cash, credit cards and debit cards.
- If the inmate already has more than $300 in the account, Denton County currently says an additional credit-card deposit cannot be made; a permitted deposit must be cash at the facility.
- Do not mail money to the inmate.
Commissary
The jail handbook states that eligible inmates can purchase up to $100 in food and personal-care items on each commissary delivery day. Normal deliveries are Tuesday and Thursday, although holidays can affect the schedule.
The handbook also describes approved web commissary orders from friends and family, subject to inmate-account balances, facility restrictions and weekly order limits.
Phone debit
Friends and family can fund an inmate’s phone debit account through Smart Communications. The Sheriff’s Office lists customer support at 1-727-349-1561. Inmate phone and trust-account balances are handled separately.
Other Useful Rules From the Current Inmate Handbook
- Inmate property is generally held until release.
- The handbook lists inmate-property pickup for authorized persons Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., unless other arrangements are made.
- Most property release is handled on an all-or-nothing basis, with limited exceptions.
- Inmates use electronic requests through housing tablets or kiosks for many jail services.
- Standard inmate phone calls do not allow three-way calling; violations can result in restrictions.
- Jail rules, service providers and schedules can change, so time-sensitive actions should be checked against the Sheriff’s current inmate-services page.
Older Jail Records, Mugshots and Formal Record Requests
The live jail lookup is not the same as a formal Sheriff’s Office records request. If you need an older jail document, booking-related record or another record maintained by the Sheriff’s Office, Denton County provides several official request methods.
The Sheriff’s Office lists these approved channels:
- Mail a written request to DCSO Records Division, 127 N. Woodrow Lane, Denton, TX 76205.
- Email the Sheriff’s records unit at so.orr@dentoncounty.gov.
- Hand-deliver a written request to the Records Division at the Woodrow Lane address.
- Submit an electronic request through the Sheriff’s GovQA public-information portal linked from the official Sheriff page.

When the Person Has Left Denton County Jail
A missing county-jail record may mean the person is no longer in local county custody.
Denton County also links the Texas IVSS-Counties system for victim-service and custody-notification needs. Notification services are useful for status alerts but should not replace the jail or court record when you need to verify a booking or case.
