Find a Tulare County Inmate and Verify Current Custody
If someone was arrested in Visalia, Porterville, Tulare, Dinuba or another community in Tulare County, start with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Active Inmate Search. The countywide roster is the most useful first check for people currently held in Tulare County jail custody.
Official jail, court and inmate-service information reviewed October 27, 2026. Custody, housing, bail, court dates and facility procedures can change, so verify the live record before traveling or paying money.
How to Search the Tulare County Jail Roster
- Open the Sheriff’s official inmate search. Use the Tulare County government website rather than an old booking page or third-party directory.
- Search the person’s legal name. Check spelling carefully, including compound surnames, hyphenated names, middle names and suffixes.
- Review possible matches. The public roster can display a jacket number, last name, first name, middle name, suffix, date of birth, booking date and arresting agency.
- Select the matching record. Compare the date of birth and booking information rather than assuming the first similar name is correct.
- Record the inmate ID or jacket number. It may be needed for mail, money deposits, voicemail and other inmate services.
- Confirm the current facility. A detailed inmate record may identify the detention facility along with booking, bond, charges and court information.
What the Tulare County Inmate Record Can Show
The initial roster and the individual record do not necessarily show the same fields. Depending on the booking, useful information can include:
| Information | Why it matters | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Jacket / inmate ID | Identifies the inmate in the county system. | Save it for deposits, mail, calls and facility questions. |
| Name & date of birth | Helps separate people with similar names. | Verify both before taking any action. |
| Booking date | Shows when the current booking was entered. | Useful when distinguishing multiple arrests or records. |
| Arresting agency | Shows which agency made or processed the arrest. | Contact that agency for an arrest report when appropriate. |
| Current facility | Determines the correct jail phone number and services. | Confirm again immediately before visiting. |
| Charges | Shows allegations associated with the booking. | Use the Superior Court case for formal filed charges. |
| Bond / bail amount | May indicate the amount currently associated with release. | Verify with the facility before paying. |
| Court date | May show the next scheduled appearance. | Cross-check with Tulare County Superior Court. |
Tulare County Jail Facilities and Phone Numbers
The Sheriff’s Detentions Division operates multiple facilities. Do not assume that “Tulare County Jail” means one building.
For general Sheriff’s Office questions, the department lists its headquarters at 833 S. Akers St., Visalia, CA 93277, telephone 559-802-9400 and toll-free 800-808-0488.
Check the Sheriff’s current facility and department contact directory.
If the Tulare County Inmate Search Shows No Result
A missing name does not automatically mean the person was never arrested. Work through these checks in order:
- Retry the spelling. Check legal surname, former surname, hyphenation, suffix and middle name.
- Allow time for booking. A very recent arrest may still be moving through intake and identification.
- Confirm the county. An arrest near a county boundary may be booked elsewhere.
- Call the likely facility. Use the Pre-Trial, Bob Wiley or South County numbers above when you have reason to believe the person is there.
- Check the court case. A defendant may have been released while the criminal case continues.
- Check California state custody. If the person has been transferred to state prison, use CDCR CIRIS.
- Check federal custody when applicable. Federal detainees and prisoners are searched separately through the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.
Charges, Court Dates and Bail: Use the Correct Record
Jail record vs. court record
The Sheriff’s roster is best for current custody, booking and facility information. For the criminal case itself, use Tulare County Superior Court’s public Case Index Search through the court’s Online Services page.
- Open Tulare County Superior Court Online Services.
- Choose Case Index Search.
- Search the available public case database using the case information you have.
- Compare the defendant, case number and court information with the jail booking.
- For current hearing information, rely on the court record rather than an old booking page.
For in-custody calendar questions, the Superior Court lists the Pretrial Facility court contact at 559-730-5020. The Pretrial Facility itself is closed to the public for hearings; the court states that in-custody hearings are held remotely through the South County Justice Center in Porterville.
Bail and release payments
The Sheriff’s published bail guidance identifies four methods used in the Tulare County jail system:
- Lobby payment kiosk, when available, for the full bail amount.
- Cashier’s check for the full amount payable to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department.
- Cash for the full amount at the jail facility.
- A licensed bail bond company.
The Superior Court also publishes Tulare County’s bail schedule through its Forms & Filing page, but a schedule is not a substitute for the bail actually ordered or displayed for a specific inmate.
