Find a Wayne County Jail Inmate and Verify Current Custody
If you are trying to find someone held in Wayne County, Michigan, start with the Wayne County Sheriff’s official Inmate Inquiry. The public search accepts a name, subject number or booking number and can be limited to people currently in custody.
You do not need to pay a people-search website just to check the Wayne County jail roster. Search the official database first, save the inmate’s booking number, and then use the sections below for bond, court dates, visitation, mail, money, phone services and release information.
Information checked: October 27, 2026. Custody, bond, court and visitation information can change after a record is viewed, so verify a live status before paying money or traveling.
How to Search the Wayne County Jail Roster
- Open the Wayne County Sheriff’s inmate-search page. The Sheriff’s page links to the county’s current public Inmate Inquiry system.
- Enter the person’s legal name. Start with the last name and add the first name to narrow common-name results.
- Use the Subject Number or Booking Number when you have it. A number is safer than relying on a name alone when several inmates have similar names.
- Keep “In Custody” selected when you only need people currently shown in Wayne County custody.
- Add booking dates if needed. The search provides Booking From Date and Booking To Date fields that can help narrow an older or common-name search.
- Open the matching result and save the booking number. You may need that number for deposits, messages, CarePacks, mail and jail inquiries.
| Search field | Best use |
|---|---|
| Name | Best starting point when you only know the person’s legal name. |
| Subject Number | Helps identify a specific person already recorded in the Wayne County system. |
| Booking Number | Best way to locate a particular jail booking and continue with inmate services. |
| In Custody | Use this when you only want people currently shown as being in custody. |
| Booking From / To | Narrows results when you know approximately when the arrest or booking occurred. |
| Housing Facility | Can further narrow the roster when the person’s custody location is known. |
What the Inmate Search Can—and Cannot—Answer
The roster is most useful for establishing whether a person has been entered into the Wayne County jail system and for obtaining the identifiers needed for the next step. Do not treat a jail booking as proof of guilt or as a complete criminal record.
The Sheriff’s Office specifically advises that questions about an inmate’s specific charge, court case or bond type should be verified with the court that has jurisdiction. Court orders can change after information first reaches the jail system.
| If you need… | Use… |
|---|---|
| Current Wayne County jail custody | Wayne County Sheriff Inmate Inquiry |
| Exact case status or hearing date | The court handling the criminal case |
| Current bond order | Inmate record plus the court of jurisdiction |
| Release or transfer alerts | Michigan VINE |
| Michigan state-prison custody | Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS |
| Information not available through the public jail portal | Wayne County Sheriff’s FOIA process when the record is publicly releasable |
If a Recently Arrested Person Does Not Appear
A zero-result search does not automatically mean the person was released. Recent arrests can involve transport, identification, medical screening, court processing or booking before the person appears in the county system.
- Check the spelling of the legal first and last name.
- Try the search without a middle name or nickname.
- If you know the booking or subject number, search with that instead.
- If the arrest happened very recently, contact the arresting police agency or call Wayne County inmate information at (313) 224-0797.
- Search again after intake has had time to process.
- If the person has already been released, use the appropriate court search to follow the criminal case.
- If the person was sentenced or transferred into Michigan state custody, switch to MDOC OTIS.

Current Wayne County Adult Detention Facility
Wayne County now houses its main adult detention operation in the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center (CJC). Older websites and search results may still display former Wayne County jail locations, so verify the current Russell Street address before traveling.
Wayne County Criminal Justice Center / Adult Detention Facility5301 Russell Street
Detroit, MI 48211
Inmate information: (313) 224-0797
The CJC also brings the Sheriff’s Office, Third Judicial Circuit criminal operations, Prosecutor’s Office, County Clerk criminal records functions and other criminal-justice services into the same complex.
If you are going to the CJC, Wayne County lists visitor parking at Parking Lot B, 5560 Rivard Street and Parking Lot C, 5300 Russell Street. The county advises visitors to follow posted parking and drop-off directions rather than assuming they can park directly at the CJC entrance.
Check the official CJC visitor information before traveling.
How to Check and Post Bond
Start with the inmate search and write down the person’s name, booking number, case or court information and any bond information that is displayed. Then verify the current order with the court handling the case.
Wayne County’s published procedure states that bonds can generally be processed at the jail 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with an important weekday exception: Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., cash bonds and fines should be paid at the court of jurisdiction. The court receipt is then provided to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at the Criminal Justice Center for processing.
- The person posting bond must be at least 18 years old.
- A new inmate cannot be released until jail registration processing is complete.
- An additional warrant or hold discovered during processing can delay release.
- The published jail bond fee is $10.
- A $12 booking fee may also apply if it has not already been paid.
- Cashier’s and certified checks must be payable as directed by the Sheriff; a separate check is required for each charge.
- Money orders and personal checks are not accepted under the Sheriff’s published bond procedure.
- Wayne County currently lists Discover, Visa, MasterCard and American Express for eligible bond payments and states that a third-party card processing fee applies.
Verify current Wayne County bond instructions before making a payment.
How to Find the Court Case, Hearing Date or Updated Bond
Wayne County has multiple district courts, so the correct search depends on where the case began. The jail roster and the court record are different systems.
| Situation | Where to check |
|---|---|
| Detroit misdemeanor or early-stage Detroit felony case | 36th District Court Case Inquiry |
| Case from another Wayne County municipality | Michigan MiCOURT Case Search or the local district court shown in the case |
| Felony case moved to Wayne County Circuit Court | Third Judicial Circuit public case search |
The 36th District Court states that its public Case Inquiry system provides the Register of Actions and court schedule for qualifying cases filed from 1990 to the present. For Detroit arraignment questions, the Criminal Division lists (313) 965-5029.
Online court information is informational and may not be the certified court record. For a time-sensitive hearing, bond change or release decision, verify with the court of record.
Wayne County Jail Visitation
Wayne County currently conducts social visits by video. A person who is at least 17 years old and has acceptable identification may receive one non-contact video visit per week for up to 30 minutes under the Sheriff’s published rules.
The Sheriff’s inmate page lists general ADF social visitation periods of 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.. The facility page separately lists housing-unit video kiosk periods of 8:00–10:30 a.m., 12:30–2:00 p.m. and 6:00–9:00 p.m. The public on-site Video Visitation Suite is listed as open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., excluding weekends and holidays. Facility schedules can change.
Published acceptable identification includes a state driver’s license, state identification card, passport, federal military ID or City of Detroit Municipal ID.
- Confirm that the inmate is still in custody.
- Open the Sheriff’s official visitation page.
- Use the linked video-visit registration service.
- Select an available visit that matches the inmate’s current schedule.
- If visiting from the CJC Visitation Center, bring approved identification and follow the facility’s prohibited-item rules.
Send Money, Pay for Phone Time or Order a CarePack
Get the booking number from the inmate search before opening a payment service. Using the wrong booking-number format is one of the easiest ways to create a deposit problem.
| Service | What Wayne County currently uses | Booking number |
|---|---|---|
| Commissary / phone deposits | TouchPay, WCJ/ADF Facility #248211; customer service (866) 204-1603 | 10-digit format |
| Video visits, messages and photo sharing | GettingOut; customer service (866) 516-0115 | 10-digit format |
| Commissary CarePacks | JailATM; customer service (877) 810-0914 | Full 12-digit booking number |
Money can also be deposited at a lobby kiosk on the first floor of the Criminal Justice Center Administration Building near the Visitation Center. Wayne County says its commissary vendor provides snack foods, hygiene items, clothing and phone time.
Check current commissary and deposit instructions before paying because vendors, fees and service rules can change.
How to Send Mail to a Wayne County Inmate
Do not send ordinary family-and-friend mail directly to the Russell Street jail. Wayne County’s current procedure routes personal letters, pictures and drawings through an off-site processing address so they can be delivered digitally through the inmate tablet system.

Verify the current mail rules and address before sending anything important.
Property Release, Proof of Incarceration and FOIA Records
Wayne County’s Adult Detention Facility currently lists inmate property-release service Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays and weekends. An inmate can authorize property release to another person by completing the jail’s Property Release Form; the person collecting it must present valid identification.
The Sheriff states that property and clothing not collected within 90 days after release may be destroyed or otherwise disposed of under the facility process.
For proof of incarceration, current facility information lists request processing on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a $10 fee. The request should identify the inmate and the incarceration period needed.
If you need publicly releasable information beyond what the inmate portal displays, use the Wayne County Sheriff’s FOIA request process.
Wayne County Jail Search vs. Michigan State Prison Search
The Wayne County roster and Michigan Department of Corrections offender search are not interchangeable.
Use the county system when the person is being held in the Wayne County Adult Detention Facility or another Wayne County supervised custody setting. Use Michigan MDOC OTIS when the person is a qualifying state prisoner, parolee or probationer under MDOC jurisdiction.
MDOC specifically states that OTIS does not contain people who are held only in county jails or city lockups or who were sentenced only to jail.
Get Release or Transfer Notifications
If you need ongoing custody updates instead of repeatedly checking the jail roster, Michigan VINE provides custody-status information and notifications. Michigan lists the VINE information number as 1-800-770-7657. Available notifications can include release, transfer and other custody-status changes.
