Find a Mecklenburg County Jail Inmate and Verify the Booking
If you need a Mecklenburg County jail inmate search, start with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Inquiry. It is the county’s public search for people currently in custody as well as inmate records retained from recent years. You can search before calling the jail, scheduling a visit, sending money or mailing correspondence.
The most important local detail is that people arrested by law-enforcement agencies throughout Mecklenburg County are processed through the Sheriff’s Arrest Processing Center at 801 East Fourth Street in Charlotte. A very recent arrest may therefore take time to appear in the public inmate database while intake is being completed.
Information checked against current Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina court resources on October 18, 2026.
How to Use the Official Mecklenburg County Inmate Search
The Sheriff’s search is labeled Inmate Inquiry. MCSO frequently uses the word resident on its detention pages, but the public database itself still uses “Inmate Inquiry.” Both terms refer to people held in the detention system.
- Open the official Inmate Inquiry. Go directly to Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Inquiry.
- Choose whether you want current custody only. Use the “Actives Only” option when your goal is to find someone who should be in jail now.
- Search by name. Enter the last name and at least one letter of the first name. Start with the person’s legal spelling rather than a nickname.
- Use an identifier when available. The system also accepts a PID or JID. An exact identifier is useful when several people have similar names.
- Do not fill every field at once. The Sheriff’s system warns that using too many search fields can cause an error. Search by name or by an identifying number rather than combining unnecessary fields.
- Open the matching record. Compare date of birth and other identifying information before relying on charges, bond or custody details.
The inquiry also provides a Prisoner Type filter. The Sheriff’s FAQ lists categories that can include STATE, FEDERAL, BOP, ICE, 287G and SMCP. Use this filter only when you already know the custodial category; otherwise a name search is usually easier.
What the Mecklenburg County Jail Roster Can Tell You
The official search covers current inmates and records from the previous three years. MCSO says arrest and resident inquiry information normally remains online for three years from the date of arrest or release.
| What you need | Best source | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Current jail custody | MCSO Inmate Inquiry | Active status, inmate identity and available custody information |
| Recent arrest | MCSO Arrest Inquiry | Arrest date, arrest number, PID, mugshot and available charge data |
| Criminal case or hearing | North Carolina Judicial Branch | Case filings, court dates and official court information |
| State prison after transfer | NC Department of Adult Correction | State offender status, prison custody, probation or parole information |
A public inmate profile may show identifying information such as DOB, race, ethnicity, sex, height and weight in addition to available mugshot, charge and sentencing information. Use those identifiers to make sure you have the correct person.
If the Person Does Not Appear in the Search
A blank result does not automatically mean the person was not arrested. Work through the likely explanations in this order:
- Confirm that the arrest happened in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, not another county or another Mecklenburg jurisdiction.
- Retry using the person’s legal name and fewer search fields.
- If the arrest was very recent, allow time for booking and identification processing.
- Check the separate MCSO Arrest Inquiry.
- Call Arrest Processing at 980-314-5100 if you need to confirm a very recent booking.
- Consider whether the person already posted bond, was released, transferred, or entered state or federal custody.
For general inmate information, including questions about paying a bond, MCSO lists 704-336-8100. For specific custody information and release notifications, the Sheriff’s detention page also directs users to the VINE system at 1-800-247-9658.
Charges, Bond, Court Dates and Release Information
The jail database is the best starting point for custody, but the court system is the better source for the criminal case itself. After locating the correct inmate, note the name, PID or other available identifiers and then check Mecklenburg County court records.
- Find the person in the MCSO inmate search.
- Review the listed charge and bond information.
- Open the North Carolina Judicial Branch Mecklenburg County page.
- Use the court-date or eCourts Portal option to find the related case.
- Recheck the jail or court before paying a bond because amounts and release conditions can change after a hearing.
| Bond code | Meaning listed by MCSO |
|---|---|
| SEC | Secured |
| UNS | Unsecured |
| CASH | Cash only |
| CUST | Custody of another |
| NONE | No bond allowed |
These codes describe how the Sheriff’s system labels the bond. They are not a substitute for the court order. If the record is unclear, call 704-336-8100 before taking action.
The Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court is at 832 E. Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC. The North Carolina Judicial Branch currently lists public office hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
MCSO does not provide unserved warrant details to the general public. For served warrant and court information, use the state eCourts resources or the Sheriff’s arrest search.

Visiting a Mecklenburg County Jail Resident
MCSO offers public/personal visitation and internet video visitation. Visits should be scheduled before you travel.
- Find the resident in the official inmate search and confirm current custody.
- Go to the MCSO visitation page and review the current rules.
- Register through the approved visitation system.
- Schedule the visit at least one day in advance. MCSO says visits cannot be booked more than one week ahead.
- Bring valid government-issued identification for an in-person visit.
- Arrive on time. The Sheriff’s rules state that a visit is automatically cancelled if the visitor arrives 10 minutes after the scheduled time.
| Current published visitation window | Time |
|---|---|
| Morning | 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. |
| Afternoon | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. |
| Evening | 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. |
The current MCSO visitation page lists internet video visits at $6.25 for 25 minutes or $2.50 for 10 minutes. Rates, availability and facility restrictions can change, so verify the amount shown by the scheduling service before paying.
For scheduling problems, MCSO currently lists 855-208-7349. Accepted identification includes a valid state-issued ID, driver’s license, passport, military ID or international ID. Damaged, expired, taped, faded or apparently altered identification may be rejected.
How to Send Money and Use Commissary
Always confirm the resident’s exact incarcerated name, date of birth and PID before depositing money. The PID is especially important for mailed funds.
Online, phone or kiosk deposit
MCSO uses TouchPay for resident trust-account deposits. A kiosk is available at the detention facility, and deposits can also be made remotely.
- TouchPay phone: 1-866-232-1899
- Facility Locator Number: 228201
- Online: GTL/TouchPay online payment portal
- Resident account maximum: MCSO currently states a $300 maximum balance.
Money order or cashier’s check by mail
Make the money order or cashier’s check payable to the resident’s name exactly as recorded when incarcerated. Write the resident’s date of birth and PID number on the payment, and include the sender’s name and address.
Resident trust-account mail Resident’s NameP.O. Box 31427
Charlotte, NC 28231-1427
Do not send regular personal correspondence to this money address. MCSO also says cash sent by mail is not accepted.
Commissary schedule
For Detention Center Central, MCSO currently publishes commissary ordering on Sunday and Tuesday during 8:00–11:30 a.m., 1:00–4:30 p.m. and 7:00–11:00 p.m. Deliveries are listed for Tuesday and Thursday.
- Maximum order: $50 per order.
- Maximum frequency: two orders per week.
- MCSO states no ordering is allowed Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
- The resident must have an ID bracelet to receive the order.
Before depositing a large amount, check the current MCSO Send Money instructions because payment methods and vendor fees can change.
How to Mail a Mecklenburg County Jail Resident
Personal correspondence is not mailed to the jail’s East Fourth Street address. The Sheriff’s current mail system uses an off-site address in Maryland for personal mail processing.
Personal mail Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, NCResident Name and PID Number
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
For the best chance of delivery, include the complete facility name and state, the resident’s full name and PID, and the sender’s full name and physical return address.
- Send personal letters, pictures or drawings that comply with jail rules.
- Do not put money, checks or money orders in personal correspondence.
- MCSO allows no more than 10 internet-printed pages in one envelope.
- Avoid stickers, tape, paper clips, staples, clasps, glued contents, perfume and prohibited material.
- Boxes, oversized envelopes and bubble envelopes are not accepted as regular personal mail.
Legal mail
The current MCSO Resident Handbook lists a separate legal-mail address:
Legal mail Resident Name and PID NumberP.O. Box 31367
Charlotte, NC 28231
Mail from courts, attorneys and probation/parole officers is handled separately from ordinary personal mail. Check the current MCSO mail rules before sending time-sensitive legal correspondence.
Books, magazines and newspapers
The Sheriff’s Resident Handbook says books and periodicals must come directly from a bookstore, distributor, publisher or printer, be in original packaging and include a receipt or invoice. Do not send an informal package from home and assume it will be accepted.
Phone Calls and Electronic Messages
Residents can make outgoing calls from their housing area. MCSO uses GTL/ConnectNetwork services for telephone accounts. When you receive a resident call, a recorded message identifies it as a call from the Mecklenburg County Detention Center and lets you accept or refuse it.
- Calls may be monitored and recorded.
- The Sheriff’s current phone page lists a maximum call length of 20 minutes.
- AdvancePay prepaid accounts can be managed through ConnectNetwork.
- For blocked-call issues, MCSO lists GTL customer service at 1-866-230-7761 or 877-650-4249.
- Three-way calling, forwarding, call waiting or similar telephone features can cause a jail call to disconnect.
Electronic messaging is also available through the jail’s approved messaging system. Fees may apply, and messages are subject to review. Do not use ordinary jail messaging when confidential attorney-client communication is required.
If the Inmate Is Released or Transferred
If a person disappears from the current Mecklenburg County inmate results, check the case before assuming the matter is finished. The person may have bonded out, been released after a court order, transferred to another jurisdiction or entered North Carolina state prison custody.
| Situation | Next search |
|---|---|
| Still believed to be in Mecklenburg County custody | MCSO Inmate Inquiry or 704-336-8100 |
| Recently arrested but not on inmate search | MCSO Arrest Inquiry or Arrest Processing at 980-314-5100 |
| Transferred to NC state prison | NC Department of Adult Correction Offender Search |
| Need court outcome or next hearing | North Carolina Judicial Branch / Mecklenburg County Clerk |
| Need custody-change notification | VINE or NC SAVAN |
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search covers state prisoners, probationers and parolees. It specifically does not contain ordinary county-jail records, so use it after a transfer to state custody rather than as the first Mecklenburg jail search.
NC SAVAN provides custody-status notifications and can include county jail inmates as well as state offenders. MCSO also directs people seeking specific resident information and release notifications to VINE at 1-800-247-9658.

Use the Live Record for the Final Check
For most searches, the quickest path is simple: find the person in the official MCSO Inmate Inquiry, verify the identity, note the available charge or bond information, and use the court system only when you need the actual case record or hearing information. Before traveling, paying money, scheduling a visit or relying on a release date, check the live record again because jail status can change during the day.
Public jail and arrest information should be used carefully. An arrest or charge is not proof of guilt, and public booking data should not be treated as a substitute for an official criminal-history report or consumer report when making employment, housing, credit or similar eligibility decisions.
