Find a Leon County Jail Inmate and Check Current Custody
If someone was arrested in Tallahassee or elsewhere in Leon County, start with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office online inmate search. The official search is designed to show people currently held at the Leon County Detention Facility and is more useful for a live custody check than a commercial people-search website.

The detention facility provides booking and detention services for law-enforcement agencies throughout Leon County. This means a person arrested by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Tallahassee Police Department, or another agency operating in the county may ultimately appear in the same county detention search after booking is processed.
How to Search the Leon County Jail Roster
The current Sheriff-operated inmate search accepts a first name, last name, ethnicity and gender. You normally do not need every field. Starting with a surname and adding information only when needed usually reduces the chance of excluding the correct person.
- Open the official inmate search. Use the Leon County Sheriff’s Office page rather than an advertisement or paid background-check site.
- Enter the last name first. Add the first name if there are several matches.
- Use ethnicity or gender only when useful. These filters can help separate people with similar names but may also remove a result if you select the wrong option.
- Review the matching person carefully. Compare the full name, age or other identifying information shown, arrest date, charges and arresting agency.
- Check the “In Jail?” status. The search-results page is intended for people currently in custody.
- Open the detailed record when available. Note any identifying number you may need later for mail, calls or communication with detention staff.
What You Can Find in a Leon County Inmate Search
The current official results page displays core booking and custody information that can help you identify the correct person.
| Displayed information | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Photo and full name | Compare identity carefully, especially when the name is common. |
| Last arrest date | Helps confirm that the record matches the arrest you are researching. |
| Last release date | May provide additional custody context when displayed. |
| “In Jail?” status | Confirms whether the person is shown as currently incarcerated. |
| Charge information | Shows allegations connected with the booking, not a finding of guilt. |
| Arresting agency | Identifies which agency made or processed the arrest. |
For the final status of a criminal charge, upcoming court activity, docket entries or case disposition, move from the jail record to the Leon County Clerk court-record system.
Why a Recently Arrested Person May Not Appear
A failed search does not automatically mean the person was not arrested. The most common possibilities are practical rather than unusual.
- The person is still being processed through intake and booking.
- The name was entered differently from the booking record.
- You selected an unnecessary ethnicity or gender filter.
- The person was released before you searched.
- The arrest occurred outside Leon County.
- The person was transferred to another county, state prison or federal custody.
- You are looking for an older arrest rather than someone currently housed in the detention facility.
Try the legal surname with fewer filters, confirm the county of arrest and search again. For a live custody question that the website does not resolve, call the Leon County Detention Facility at 850-606-3500.
Bond, Release and First Appearance
The Sheriff’s detention FAQ states that a bond may be posted by credit card at the releasing area when eligible; the person making the payment must bring the card and identification. A bond listed with a booking can change because of court action, additional charges, holds or other release conditions, so confirm the current amount and eligibility before traveling or paying anyone.
First appearance
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office currently states that first appearance begins at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays, in Courtroom 2D at the Leon County Courthouse. Court schedules can change, so use the Clerk’s court record when you need the actual case docket or hearing information.
Court Cases, Final Disposition and Older Jail Records
A jail roster answers a custody question. A court record answers what is happening in the criminal case. They should not be treated as the same record.

How to check the related court case
- Find the correct person in the Leon County inmate search.
- Write down the exact booked name, charges and any case information shown.
- Open the Leon County Clerk Court Records page.
- Search by the defendant’s name or other available case information.
- Open the matching case and review the docket, charges and available documents.
- Use the Clerk rather than the jail roster when you need the final case outcome.
The Clerk says its public system includes available electronic civil, criminal and traffic case information except confidential or legally exempt records. The Clerk can be reached at 850-606-4000.

Leon County Detention Facility Visitation and Phone Calls
Video visitation remains an important option for approved friends, family, attorneys and clergy. Leon County uses Securus for video visitation and inmate telephone services.
- Confirm that the person is still in Leon County custody.
- Open the current LCSO visitation page.
- Follow the Securus registration link from the Sheriff’s page.
- Create or sign in to your Securus account.
- Select Leon County Detention Facility and the correct inmate.
- Review available visit times and the current fee before scheduling.
When regular in-person visitation is available, LCSO’s published rules require visitors to be at least 16 years old and present valid identification. The standard visit is 30 minutes. Security and dress-code rules apply.
For inmate telephone account setup, the Sheriff’s detention FAQ directs families to Securus or 1-800-844-6591.
How to Put Money on an Inmate Account
Leon County currently lists several ways to fund an inmate canteen account. Confirm the inmate’s identity and current custody before submitting a payment.
- Online: JPay accepts eligible debit or credit-card deposits.
- Phone: JPay deposit line: 800-574-5729.
- Lobby kiosk: A deposit kiosk is available inside the Leon County Detention Facility lobby.
- Telephone funds: LCSO directs users to Securus for inmate telephone-account funding.
- Care packages: The Sheriff’s page identifies iCare for approved snack or personal-care packages.
The Sheriff’s deposit page states that mailed deposits are not accepted. Because payment vendors, fees and kiosk options can change, use the current official inmate-deposit page immediately before sending money.
How to Send Mail to a Leon County Jail Inmate
Routine personal mail and legal mail use different addresses. Using the detention facility street address for ordinary personal correspondence can cause the mail to be returned.
Personal / non-privileged mail
Inmate/Detainee’s Legal Name and SPN Number
C/O Securus Digital Mail Center – Leon County
PO Box 21947
Tampa, FL 33622-1947
Personal correspondence sent through the Securus Digital Mail Center is scanned for electronic delivery to the inmate’s issued tablet. If an inmate does not have a tablet, LCSO states that the correspondence is printed and delivered.
Legal / privileged mail
Leon County Detention Facility
Inmate/Detainee’s Legal Name and SPN Number
Post Office Box 2278
Tallahassee, FL 32316
Legal mail should be clearly marked as legal or privileged correspondence. Do not mix personal mail with the legal-mail process.
Important mail restrictions
LCSO says incoming mail is inspected for contraband. Its current published rules prohibit or restrict items such as envelopes with stickers or tape, loose writing supplies or stamps, oversized greeting cards and mail contaminated with substances such as perfume, powder, glue or glitter.
The detention facility does not accept ordinary packages or books sent by private individuals, Amazon or other delivery services. Magazines and newspapers/newsletters must meet current facility rules and be sent directly from the publisher. Check the official inmate-mail page before mailing anything valuable.
Medical or Mental-Health Concerns
The Sheriff’s Office created these numbers for people concerned about a family member incarcerated at the detention facility. If medical personnel do not answer, LCSO asks callers to leave the inmate’s name, the concern and contact information.
If the Person Is No Longer in Leon County Jail
A person can disappear from the county roster and still remain incarcerated. The correct next search depends on where the person went.
| Situation | Where to search next |
|---|---|
| Released but criminal case continues | Leon County Clerk court records |
| Older Leon County arrest or Sheriff’s record | LCSO Public Records Center |
| Transferred to Florida state prison | Florida Department of Corrections Offender Search |
| Federal prison custody | Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator |
| Booked in another Florida county | Search the sheriff/corrections system for that county |
Florida DOC Offender Search Federal Inmate Locator
The Florida Department of Corrections search is for people sentenced to state prison or state supervision. It does not replace a county jail search for someone recently arrested and still being held locally.
