Find a Henrico Jail West Inmate and Confirm Current Custody
If you are trying to find someone at Henrico County Regional Jail West, there is an important shortcut: Jail West does not use a separate public inmate database. The correct official search is the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office inmate lookup, which covers the Henrico jail system.
Search by the person’s last name or use the first-letter option, then confirm the correct person and current facility before sending money, mail, arranging a visit, or making release plans.

How to Search Henrico Jail West Inmates
The Sheriff’s public search is intentionally simple. It asks for a last name and also provides alphabet buttons if you know only the first letter of the surname.
- Open the official lookup. Go to the Henrico County Jail Inmate Information search.
- Enter the last name. Use the legal surname used during booking whenever possible.
- Try the starting-letter option if needed. This is useful when spelling is uncertain.
- Review all plausible matches. Do not rely only on a matching name when the name is common.
- Confirm the current facility. Make sure the person is associated with Jail West before using Jail West mail, money or contact instructions.
- Verify anything time-sensitive. Call Jail West before traveling, arranging release transportation or taking another action that depends on the inmate still being there.
If you need a broader county-level explanation, our Henrico County jail inmate search guide explains how Jail West and Jail East fit into the same local custody system.
What the Henrico Inmate Lookup Is Best Used For
Treat the Sheriff’s system primarily as a current jail-custody locator. A booking search, police arrest report and court record answer different questions.
| You need to know | Best official source | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Whether someone appears in Henrico jail custody | Henrico Sheriff inmate search | Direct county jail lookup |
| Whether the inmate is at Jail West | Sheriff search + Jail West confirmation | Henrico operates more than one jail facility |
| Recent Henrico arrest information | Henrico Arrest Reports | Separate county arrest-data service |
| Filed criminal case, hearing or disposition | Virginia court system | The Sheriff’s lookup does not provide case dispositions |
| Bail decision or release conditions | Court or Henrico Magistrate | Bail is a judicial decision, not simply a roster entry |
| Person moved to state correctional custody | Virginia DOC locator | State custody uses a separate system |
The Sheriff’s disclaimer specifically directs people seeking charge or disposition information to the charging agency or the appropriate court clerk. That distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a jail entry as a complete criminal-case record.
If the Person Does Not Appear in the Search
A blank result does not automatically mean the person was never arrested. Work through the custody path in this order:
- Recheck the legal last-name spelling and try only the first letter.
- If the arrest was very recent, allow time for transportation, identification and booking.
- Check Henrico’s official Arrest Reports if your question is about an arrest rather than current custody.
- Call Jail West at (804) 501-4581 during published information hours or (804) 501-4586 after hours.
- Remember that the person may be at Henrico Regional Jail East instead of Jail West.
- If sentenced or transferred into state custody, use the Virginia DOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator.
- If the person was released, use the court system to follow the criminal case rather than repeatedly checking the current jail search.

Jail West Booking, Charges, Bond and Release
Regional Jail West is a maximum-security Henrico County facility that houses both pretrial and post-trial inmates. Henrico says the facility opened in 1980 and was substantially expanded in 1996. Jail West is also the headquarters of the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office.
The facility’s Intake & Release Booking section handles admission and release processing, but the public inmate search should not be confused with the complete court case.
Checking arrest information
Henrico County publishes an Arrest Reports search separately from the Sheriff’s inmate locator. Use it when you are researching the arrest event rather than only current jail custody.
Checking the criminal court case
For current court charges, hearings and later case activity, use the Virginia court system. Henrico General District Court handles many misdemeanor, traffic and preliminary criminal matters, while felony matters can proceed through Circuit Court.

Sending Mail or Receiving an Inmate Call

Henrico, VA 23228-9768
Henrico says incoming inmate mail is scanned for contraband. Its current prohibited-item list includes greeting cards, inappropriate photographs, cigarettes, lighters, matches, drugs and personal checks.
Newspapers, magazines and books are accepted only when mailed directly from the publishing house. The Sheriff’s current instructions say second- and third-party vendor packages are not accepted under this rule.
Because correctional mail rules can change, check Henrico’s current inmate mail instructions before mailing anything.
Inmate phone calls
Henrico uses ViaPath for inmate telephone services. Inmates can make collect calls, although some phone carriers do not accept them. Friends and family may establish a prepaid account, and inmates may also purchase prepaid calling cards using canteen funds.
Inmates generally place outgoing calls; do not assume the jail can transfer an incoming personal call directly to an inmate.
How to Send Money to a Jail West Inmate
First confirm the inmate’s current facility and identifying information. Henrico currently lists several funding methods:
- in person using the approved jail deposit process/Keefe system;
- by phone at 636-888-7004;
- online through Access Corrections;
- through the Access Corrections mobile app; and
- by approved mail deposit.
Henrico currently states that certified checks and money orders are accepted at Jail West from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. For mailed funds, the Sheriff’s instructions list certified checks and money orders and advise against mailing cash.
Review the complete official Henrico inmate-funds instructions before sending money because recipient-identification requirements and vendor procedures can change.
Care packages and meals
Henrico currently directs family and friends to Access Securepak for approved snack, hygiene and clothing packages and to iCare for approved hot-meal ordering. Start from the Sheriff’s official care-package page rather than searching for a vendor independently.
Medical Care, Property and Emergency Messages
Medical services
Henrico states that medical staff are available 24 hours a day. The jail uses a medical co-payment policy for some inmate-requested services, but an inmate without money is not denied medical care. The County says there is no charge for the initial booking medical screening, life-threatening emergencies or follow-up visits ordered by medical staff.
Read Henrico’s inmate medical-services information.
Personal property and clothing
Property taken during commitment is inventoried and stored. An inmate can authorize qualifying property to be released to a designated family member or friend. For a clothing exchange, Henrico currently requires the inmate to submit an Inmate Request Form to the facility quartermaster at least five working days before the requested exchange. Clothing is not accepted on the day of release or a court date.
Check the current property-exchange rules.
Emergency message to an inmate
Jail staff do not operate a general message-delivery service. Henrico says verified emergency messages may be delivered through the shift supervisor. Examples published by the County include:
- death of a relative or close friend;
- a birth where the inmate is the father;
- serious injury or hospitalization of a relative; or
- another situation the supervisor determines qualifies as an emergency.

Use the Jail Search First, Then the Correct Record
For the fastest result, search the Henrico Sheriff’s inmate system first and verify whether the person is actually at Jail West. Use Henrico arrest data for the arrest event, Virginia courts for the criminal case, the Magistrate or court for bail questions, and VADOC after a state-custody transfer.
This order avoids sending money, mail or travel plans to the wrong facility and keeps the final step tied to the agency that controls the live information.
