Find a Franklin County Jail Inmate and Check Current Custody
If you are trying to find someone arrested in Columbus or elsewhere in Franklin County, Ohio, start with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office inmate information system. It covers people currently held in the county jail system and can show the inmate’s current charges, case numbers, court dates and facility location.
How to Run a Franklin County Jail Inmate Search
- Open the official Booking Find search. Use the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office system instead of relying on a copied roster.
- Start with the last name. Entering fewer fields is useful when you are unsure about age, spelling or other identifying information.
- Add the first name if needed. Use additional filters only when the last-name search produces too many people.
- Narrow the results. The current search provides filters for offender status, sex, age and race.
- Open the correct record. Compare the available identity information carefully before assuming a person with the same name is the person you want.
- Write down the case number and inmate identifier. You may need them for court research, mail, commissary deposits and jail services.
- Check the current location. Franklin County uses more than one corrections facility, and the inmate’s listed location matters for visitation and facility-specific questions.
- Verify bond separately. Franklin County Sheriff’s Office directs users to the Clerk of Courts for current bond information.

How to Check Bond and Court Information
The jail search and court databases serve different purposes. Use the jail search to establish custody and obtain the case number. Then use the court that is handling the case to verify bond, filings and case activity.
Municipal Court Cases
Franklin County Municipal Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic matters and other cases within its jurisdiction. Its Clerk’s search allows a case lookup using a case number, ticket number, or the person’s first and last name.
- Copy the case number from the jail record if one is available.
- Open the Franklin County Municipal Court Clerk Records Search.
- Search by case number for the most precise result. If you do not have it, enter the first and last name.
- Confirm the date of birth or other case details when multiple records appear.
- Open the case and review the docket, events and available bond information.

Posting Bail and Release Timing
The Franklin County Municipal Court Criminal/Traffic Department states that bail for a Municipal Court prisoner can be posted 24 hours a day. Current accepted methods include cash, Discover, MasterCard and Visa.
After bail is accepted, the Clerk sends a release form to the jail. That does not mean the person walks out immediately. For the physical release timeframe after payment, the Clerk directs users to contact the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at 614-525-3368.
For felony and domestic-violence matters, bond may be set during arraignment. Current Municipal Court information states that these arraignments begin at 9:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays.
If the Inmate Does Not Appear in the Search
A failed search is not enough by itself to conclude that the person was never arrested. Work through these checks:
- Search the legal last name instead of a nickname.
- Remove optional filters such as age or race and search again.
- Allow additional processing time after a very recent arrest.
- Call 614-525-3368 to confirm Franklin County jail custody.
- Check the Municipal Court or Common Pleas case system if you know a case was filed.
- Consider whether the person was released before you searched.
- Check whether another city, county, state or federal agency has custody.
- If the person was sentenced or transferred to an Ohio state prison, use the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction search instead.
Search Ohio State Prison and Supervision Records
The Ohio state search covers people incarcerated in an Ohio prison, under Department supervision or judicially released. It is a different database from the Franklin County jail search.
Virtual Visitation
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office provides virtual visitation for people held at Corrections Center II on Jackson Pike through ViaPath/GTL. The Sheriff’s current instructions state that incarcerated individuals receive two free 20-minute virtual visits per week, with additional paid options potentially available.
- First confirm that the person is still in custody and check the location shown in the inmate search.
- Open the Sheriff’s Inmate Information page and follow its current virtual-visitation link.
- Register for a visitation account.
- Follow the current ViaPath/GTL app instructions provided by the Sheriff.
