Find a Person in CCDOC and Verify the Right Cook County Record

CCDOC means the Cook County Department of Corrections in Chicago, Illinois. If you are trying to find someone held in Cook County Jail, start with the Cook County Sheriff’s official Individual in Custody Locator. Cook County normally uses “individual in custody” rather than “inmate” on its official jail pages.

Fast answer: Search using the person’s full first and last name, or enter the Cook County Booking ID if you already have it. When using a Booking ID, enter the number without the hyphen. For a very recent arrest, remember that booking, court and jail processing can delay when information becomes available online.

How to Use the CCDOC Jail Inmate Search

  1. Open the Cook County Sheriff Individual in Custody Locator.
  2. Enter the person’s full first name and full last name. Both name fields are required when searching by name.
  3. If you know the Cook County Booking ID, you can search with that instead of the person’s name.
  4. Enter a Booking ID without a hyphen. The official locator currently gives a format example such as 20250043394.
  5. Submit the search and carefully compare the returned record with the person you are trying to locate.
  6. Record the booking number and housing/division information you need before arranging visits, sending money or mailing anything.
Do not stop at a name match. Common names can produce confusion. Verify as much identifying and booking information as the official record makes available before taking another action.

Criminal case status or court events Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County

A CCDOC custody listing is not the same thing as a complete criminal-history or court record. An arrest, booking, charge or jail listing also does not by itself establish that a person was convicted.

If the Person Is Not Showing in the CCDOC Locator

Before paying for a third-party search, work through these checks:

  1. Re-enter the person’s full legal first and last name and check spelling carefully.
  2. If you know the Booking ID, search with it instead and remove any hyphen.
  3. If the arrest just happened, allow time for law-enforcement, court and intake processing.
  4. Call the Cook County Sheriff’s automated help line at 773-674-5245.
  5. Confirm that the person was actually taken into Cook County Department of Corrections custody rather than another municipal, county, state or federal facility.
  6. If the person previously appeared but is no longer there, check the court case for release or disposition information.
  7. If the person may have been transferred to state prison, use the Illinois Department of Corrections Individual in Custody Search.

How CCDOC Visitation Works

Do not drive to 2700 S. California Avenue simply because you found the person in the jail locator. Cook County uses separate visitation procedures.

  1. Find the person in the official custody locator.
  2. Confirm the person’s current division or housing assignment.
  3. Coordinate with your detained family member or friend. Current CCDOC instructions state that the individual in custody needs to add the visitor’s name to the visitation list.
  4. Follow the instructions provided by Cook County Sheriff’s staff for scheduling.
  5. For an in-person visit, use the official Cook County visitation scheduling system when applicable.
  6. Verify the division, visit date, time and identification requirements before leaving home.
Video visits: CCDOC currently provides family video visits using Microsoft Teams. The visitor needs an active Teams account tied to an email address. Jail visitation rules still apply during a video visit.

Check the current CCDOC visitation page immediately before a visit because division procedures and schedules can change.

How to Send Mail to Someone in CCDOC

The Sheriff currently publishes this basic mailing format:

Individual in Custody Name
Booking #
2700 S. California Ave.
Chicago, IL 60608

The person’s name and booking number should be included. If you do not know the booking number, retrieve it through the custody locator or call 773-674-5245.

CCDOC prohibits many items from entering through the mail. Restricted examples include food, clothing, batteries, cosmetics, glass or metal objects, medicine, jewelry, postage stamps, stickers and several other materials that can create a safety or security concern.

Mail sprayed or saturated with perfume, cologne or another foreign substance may be treated as contraband. If any part of a mailed package is prohibited, CCDOC may return the package.

Before sending anything other than a basic letter, read the current CCDOC mail instructions.

How to Put Money on a CCDOC Trust Account

You will normally need the person’s exact name and Booking Identification Number as shown in the Cook County locator.

Deposit method Current CCDOC detail
Western Union City Code: CCDOC or COOK COUNTY DEPT CORRECTION; State: Illinois
MoneyGram Receive Code: 1750
JailATM No CCDOC code is required; follow the provider’s registration process.
USPS Money orders up to $100 each and cashier’s checks up to $1,000 each are currently accepted under CCDOC rules.
Jail lobby kiosk Cash or credit-card deposits can be made at listed kiosks around the jail compound.

Online and telephone deposits through the listed electronic providers may take 1–2 business days to appear. Mailed money orders or cashier’s checks may take up to 5 business days after receipt to process.

Never mail cash. The Cook County Department of Corrections states that it does not accept cash through the mail.

For the current deposit methods, limits and kiosk locations, use the official CCDOC trust-account instructions.

Phone Calls and Text Messages

Cook County currently uses ViaPath/GTL services for individual-in-custody communications. Friends and family can establish prepaid services so they can receive calls.

  • ViaPath friends-and-family support: 877-650-4249.
  • The Sheriff’s published local, intrastate and interstate calling rate is currently $0.05 per minute.
  • The current text-messaging service charges $0.06 per message sent to an individual in custody.
  • The person in custody can currently respond through the messaging service without a charge to the friend or family member receiving that response.
  • Messages sent into the correctional facility can be reviewed and should not be used for privileged or confidential attorney communication.

Because communication providers and rates can change, use the Sheriff’s current phone-account page before purchasing service.

Bond, Pretrial Detention and Release

Illinois changed its pretrial system on September 18, 2023. Cash bail was eliminated for newly filed Illinois criminal cases under the state’s current pretrial framework. Courts now make release and detention decisions under the applicable pretrial statutes rather than requiring money simply as a standard condition for release.

Older Cook County cases filed before September 18, 2023 can still involve cash-bond requirements. That is why CCDOC continues to maintain bonding information.

For cases where a cash bond still applies, CCDOC currently lists the Division 5 bonding location at 2700 S. California Ave. The Sheriff’s current page states that the jail bonding facility operates from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., 365 days a year.

The Sheriff also states that once an applicable bond has been posted, discharge may take approximately 2–3 hours. Processing can take longer if additional court paperwork, another agency hold or GPS monitoring is involved.

Use the current CCDOC bonding page for the final instructions before traveling or paying anything.

How to Check the Cook County Criminal Court Case

The jail locator and the court docket answer different questions. After confirming custody, use the court system when you need information about the actual criminal case.

  1. Open the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County online case-information page.
  2. Follow the current public case-lookup route.
  3. Search using the identifying or case information the court system requests.
  4. Compare the defendant and case carefully.
  5. Review the available case status and court-event information.
Court-record limitation: The Cook County Clerk states that its online electronic docket is a public information resource and is not the official court record. Very recent docket updates can also take a few days to appear online.

When You Should Search Illinois DOC Instead

CCDOC is a county correctional system. The Illinois Department of Corrections manages Illinois state-prison custody.

If someone has been sentenced and transferred from Cook County Jail into state custody, the Cook County jail locator may no longer be the right database. In that situation, use the Illinois DOC Individual in Custody Search.

Situation Where to search
Recently arrested and taken to Cook County Jail CCDOC locator
Currently housed in Cook County Department of Corrections CCDOC locator
Transferred to an Illinois state prison Illinois DOC search
Need court dates, case status or court events Cook County Clerk/Circuit Court

CCDOC Is Not the Same as CCDC

CCDOC is the Cook County Department of Corrections in Chicago, Illinois. The similar abbreviation CCDC is frequently used for the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
