Find a Utah County Jail Inmate and Verify Current Custody

If you are trying to find someone arrested in Provo, Orem, Lehi, Spanish Fork, American Fork or elsewhere in Utah County, start with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office Arrested Person Search. It is the county’s public source for checking current and recent jail bookings.

Important: Utah County and the State of Utah are not the same inmate-search system. Someone recently arrested in Utah County is normally searched through the county Sheriff. Someone transferred to state correctional custody should be searched through the Utah Department of Corrections.

Fastest route

For a recent Utah County arrest, use the Sheriff’s public search first. The Sheriff states that booking information is made available 24 hours after the person is booked, so a person arrested only a few hours ago may not appear yet.

How to Use the Utah County Jail Inmate Search

  1. Open the official Sheriff’s inmate-search page. Use the public Arrested Person Search rather than the Enhanced Search login. Enhanced access is intended for approved law-enforcement and media users.
  2. Choose a search method. The public system allows a search by name, arrest date, or a list of inmates currently tracked by the Sheriff’s Office.
  3. For a name search, enter as much of the legal name as possible. The Sheriff’s example uses the format ADAMS, B. A fuller name helps reduce unrelated results.
  4. For an arrest-date search, use MM-DD-YYYY. This is useful when the exact name spelling is uncertain but you know when the arrest happened.
  5. Open the matching person’s booking. Compare the year of birth, booking date, booking number, arresting agency and status rather than relying on the name alone.
  6. Read the status carefully. A result may represent active custody, release, electronic monitoring, work diversion or transfer to another facility.
Just arrested? Do not assume that “no results” means the person was not booked. Utah County specifically says public booking information is available 24 hours after booking.

What the Utah County Search Result Means

The Sheriff’s booking page can identify an arrest date, booking date, booking number, arresting agency, release information when applicable and a custody-status code. Understanding the status code is especially important because not every person returned by a search is physically inside the jail.

CodeMeaningWhat it tells you
AActiveThe person is in custody.
CCommitment on fileA commitment exists, but the person is not currently in custody.
DWork diversionThe person is participating in work diversion.
EGPS / Electronic MonitorThe person is active on electronic monitoring.
L24/7 Alcohol MonitoringThe person is participating in alcohol monitoring.
OReleasedThe booking is no longer active jail custody.
RRefusedThe person was refused for a medical condition.
YTaken to another facilityCheck the receiving agency or another custody system.
ZWalked away from jailThis is a special status used by the Sheriff’s system.
Common charge and release codes

Charge codes: CG = new charge; SU = summons; CM = commitment; WA = warrant; WBW = bench warrant; NH = not holding; WIA = warrant in aid of commitment.

Common release codes: B = cash bail posted; BN = bail bond posted; PTA = promise to appear; CD = charge dropped; ROJ = released by judge; T = time served; OTH = released to another agency; USP = Utah State Prison.

Common Utah County court codes

Examples include DST for Provo District Court, PJ3 for Provo Justice Court, OMC for Orem Municipal Court, JPC for Utah County Justice Court, SMC for Spanish Fork Municipal Court and SSJC for Saratoga Springs Justice Court.

If the Inmate Does Not Appear

A failed search has several possible explanations. Work through them in this order:

  1. Wait for the booking delay. The public search may not show a new booking until 24 hours have passed.
  2. Retry the name. Use the person’s full legal surname and first-name initial or full first name. Check spelling, hyphens and suffixes.
  3. Use the Current Inmates option. This can help when the person is in custody but a name search is difficult.
  4. Search by arrest date. Use the date of arrest if you know it.
  5. Check for release or transfer. Status O indicates release and Y means the person was taken to another facility.
  6. Check Utah state custody. If the person was sentenced and transferred, use the Utah Department of Corrections Offender Search.
  7. Check VINE. Utah’s victim-notification service can help verify custody status and can provide notification of release, transfer or escape.
  8. Call the jail when the online record is still unclear. Jail information is 801-851-4302; booking is 801-851-4210.
County jail vs. state prison: The Utah Department of Corrections says its Offender Search covers people currently under UDC supervision. A person awaiting trial or not yet sentenced while housed in a county jail will not normally appear there.

Utah State Prison and Statewide Custody Lookup

If you searched Utah County and the person has already moved into state correctional custody, use the Utah Department of Corrections. The state search accepts a name or UDC identification number. For a name search, first and last name are required.

Open Utah DOC Offender Search Utah VINE Information

VINE is also useful when you want custody-change notifications. Utah describes it as a free service that can provide automated telephone or email notifications when an offender is released, transferred or escapes.

Recent Bookings and Older Utah County Records

The Sheriff’s inmate-search page currently contains two different retention statements. One note says a name search covers past and present inmates during the previous two years. Farther down, the same page says booking information and the photograph remain online for 30 days, the photograph is then removed, and remaining booking information stays online for one year.

Because those statements are not completely consistent, use the live inmate-search result for current information. If you need an older booking record, arrest document or official copy that no longer appears online, contact the Sheriff’s Records unit or use the Sheriff’s GRAMA public-records request process.

Utah County Bail and Release Information

The Sheriff’s booking guidance says a credit card may be used when bailing out an eligible person, but the jail does not accept credit-card bail payments over the phone. A transaction charge may apply.

  • Confirm the exact bail amount before arriving or paying.
  • Personal checks are not accepted.
  • Cashier’s checks and money orders must be payable to The Utah County Jail.
  • Do not rely only on a third-party bail website; verify the current booking and release conditions first.

For people returning from court, the Sheriff’s published standard release time is 3:15 p.m. This is not a guaranteed release time for every inmate. Court paperwork, holds, transportation and processing can affect the actual time.

How to Check Court Dates and Criminal Cases

A jail booking is not the same as the court case. The Utah County booking section states that jail staff do not provide court dates and directs people to the court of jurisdiction.

For publicly available Utah court-case information, use Utah Courts Xchange. If you are a party to the case, Utah Courts also directs users to MyCase where the case type is supported.

Utah Courts Xchange

Match the court case to the jail record using the person’s full name, case information and court. Court records should be used for filed charges, hearings and case outcomes; jail records are primarily custody and booking records.

Visiting a Utah County Jail Inmate

Personal visitation is handled by video through Securus. The Sheriff’s current visitation FAQ says visits are initiated by the inmate rather than scheduled by jail visiting staff.

  • The Sheriff’s booking page says eligibility normally takes about 3–5 business days.
  • The visitation FAQ says a person cannot receive a family/friend visit during the first three days and that the wait may be longer depending on circumstances.
  • Video calls are generally available from housing areas between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., depending on classification.
  • The current FAQ lists a video-call rate of $0.19 per minute, plus applicable taxes, fees or surcharges.
  • The visitor whose Securus account is being used must be present.
  • Visitors under 18 generally must be accompanied by a family member age 21 or older unless the visitor is the inmate’s spouse.

Phone Calls

Inmates cannot receive ordinary incoming calls. The jail’s orientation information says phones are generally available in housing areas from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., depending on classification, and calls are usually limited to 20 minutes.

The current orientation page lists a voice-call rate of $0.12 per minute plus applicable taxes and fees. An older inmate-services page still displays a 2021 rate of $0.21 per minute, so check the current Securus rate before funding an account.

The jail does not normally take telephone messages for inmates.

How to Send Mail

Personal mail is digitally scanned so the inmate can view it electronically. The Sheriff’s instructions require the inmate’s name and booking number:

Mailing format
First & Last Name
Booking Number
Utah County Jail
3075 N Main St
Spanish Fork, UT 84660

Put your return name and address on the envelope. Mail that is not correctly addressed can be returned. Legal mail continues to be handled separately, and new soft-cover books may be accepted when sent directly from a publisher or bookstore.

How to Add Money or Buy Commissary

Utah County uses JailATM for inmate commissary services. The Sheriff’s FAQ and inmate-services information list several deposit methods:

  • Online through JailATM.
  • By phone at 1-866-394-0490.
  • By cashier’s check or money order mailed to the jail with the inmate’s name.
  • Through lobby kiosks at the jail, which accept supported cash and card payments.

The Sheriff’s policy states that money deposited into an inmate’s account may first be applied to unpaid jail fees. An inmate who owes qualifying jail debt may be unable to order regular commissary until the debt is paid, although basic hygiene and stationery can still be ordered through the commissary provider under the stated policy.

If the Arrest Happened Outside Utah County

There is no single county-jail roster that replaces every sheriff’s inmate system in Utah. If the person was arrested outside Utah County, identify the county where the booking occurred and use that county sheriff’s current inmate roster. For state-prison custody, use Utah DOC; for broader custody notification, use Utah VINE.

Responsible use: An arrest, booking or jail listing does not establish guilt. People may be awaiting trial, held on a warrant, transferred, released or later have charges changed or dismissed. Verify important legal information with the court or responsible agency.

Utah Jail Inmate Search FAQs

1. How do I search for an inmate in the Utah County Jail?

Open the Utah County Sheriff’s Arrested Person Search and search by name or arrest date. You can also open the current-inmates list. Compare the booking date, year of birth, booking number, arresting agency and custody status before assuming you have found the correct person.

2. How quickly does a new Utah County booking appear online?

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office states that booking information is made available 24 hours after a person has been booked. A very recent arrest may therefore return no public result even though booking is still being processed.

3. What do A and O mean in the Utah County inmate search?

A means active in custody. O means released. Other codes can identify work diversion, electronic monitoring, a commitment on file or transfer to another facility.

4. Can I search old Utah County jail bookings?

The Sheriff’s current page contains differing retention statements: its name-search note says past and present inmates can be searched during the last two years, while another section says booking information remains for one year and booking photos for 30 days. For older records, contact Sheriff’s Records or use the GRAMA records-request process.

5. Why can’t I find someone who was arrested in Utah County?

The booking may be less than 24 hours old, the name may be entered differently, the person may already have been released or transferred, or the person may now be in state or another county’s custody. Retry the name, search by arrest date and check the current-inmate list before moving to other custody systems.

6. How do I find someone in a Utah state prison?

Use the Utah Department of Corrections Offender Search. It can be searched by name or UDC identification number and covers people currently under Utah Department of Corrections supervision rather than ordinary county-jail pretrial custody.

7. Where can I find a Utah County inmate’s court date?

Utah County booking staff state that they do not give out court dates. Use the court of jurisdiction and Utah Courts public case resources, such as Xchange, to verify hearings and filed criminal-case information.

8. How does visitation work at the Utah County Jail?

Personal visits are conducted by video through Securus and are initiated by the inmate. Eligibility normally takes several days after booking and depends on classification and other jail circumstances.

9. How can I send mail or money to a Utah County inmate?

Mail should include the inmate’s full name, booking number and the Utah County Jail address in Spanish Fork, plus the sender’s return address. Commissary deposits can be made through the methods listed by the Sheriff, including JailATM, telephone, qualifying mailed payments and jail lobby kiosks.

10. Does appearing in the Utah County jail search mean a person is guilty?

No. A jail or booking record shows custody or booking activity; it does not prove guilt or establish a criminal conviction. Use the appropriate Utah court record to verify filed charges and case outcomes.
