Find an Orange County Jail Inmate and Confirm Current Custody
If you need to know whether someone is in an Orange County jail, start with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Information System. The current system is inside the Sheriff’s Public Services Portal and requires users to create an account with an email address and password before searching.
The important change for anyone familiar with the old “Who’s in Jail” search is that the current system does not display inmate charges. Use the jail lookup for custody and housing information, then use the Orange County Superior Court when you need the criminal case, filed charges or hearing information.
A jail booking shows an arrest or custody event; it is not proof that a person was convicted. Custody, bail, charges and court status can change after booking.
How to Search the Orange County Jail Roster
Orange County does not require you to open separate inmate searches for Santa Ana, Orange or Irvine facilities. The Sheriff’s countywide Inmate Information System is the correct starting point for people held in OCSD custody.
- Open the Sheriff’s inmate-information page. Go to the official OCSD Inmate Information System, then continue to the Public Services Portal.
- Create or sign in to your account. OCSD now requires authentication. First-time users must register with an email address and password.
- Search for the correct person. Use the identifying information available in the current portal. Legal spelling is safer than a nickname.
- Open the matching custody record. Compare the person’s identity carefully instead of assuming the first similar name is correct.
- Save the booking number and current facility information shown. The booking number is especially useful for visitation, inmate mail, money deposits and conversations with jail staff.
- Use a second official source for the next task. Use the court system for filed criminal-case information and the facility-specific page for visiting, mail, bail or communication rules.
Is the inmate search the same thing as a jail roster?
For practical purposes, yes. Orange County now uses a searchable custody system rather than requiring the public to browse a long static roster. The Sheriff’s separate Booking Log is also useful when you are checking recent booking activity.
What to Check After You Find the Inmate
| Information | Why it matters | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Correct identity | Different people can have identical or similar names. | Compare the available identifying information before sending money, mail or bail. |
| Booking number | OCSD uses the booking number for several jail services. | Write it down exactly as displayed. |
| Current facility | Visiting procedures, mailing address and phone numbers depend on housing. | Confirm the facility again immediately before traveling. |
| Custody status | The person may be released, transferred or moved between facilities. | Use the live Sheriff’s result instead of an older cached page. |
| Bail information | Bail can change after booking or a court appearance. | Verify the full bail amount with Inmate Records before paying. |
| Criminal case | A booking record and a court case are different records. | Use Orange County Superior Court Case Access for filed case information. |
OCSD’s Inmate Records operation works around the clock and handles booking, tracking, sentence calculations, court scheduling and release processing. For custody questions that cannot be resolved online, the Sheriff’s Inmate Records office is at 550 N. Flower Street, Santa Ana, CA 92703 and lists 714-647-4666.
If the Orange County Inmate Search Shows No Result
A blank search is not enough to conclude that the person was never arrested. Work through the likely explanations in order.
| Possible reason | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Arrest happened very recently | Allow time for transportation, identification, medical screening and booking, then search again. |
| Name was entered differently | Retry the legal spelling, surname, middle name or suffix where the portal allows it. |
| Person was already released | Check the Booking Log and Orange County Superior Court case access, then call Inmate Records if necessary. |
| Person was moved between OC jails | Search the countywide system again; do not assume the original booking location is still the housing location. |
| Transferred to California state prison | Use the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s CIRIS search. |
| Federal custody | Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator instead of a county jail database. |
| Wrong county | Confirm where the arrest actually occurred and which agency accepted the booking. |
If the arrest may belong to another California jurisdiction, use the relevant local guide instead of repeatedly searching Orange County: San Bernardino County inmate search, Ventura County inmate search, Kern County inmate search, or the San Jose and Santa Clara County jail guide.
Orange County Jail Facilities and Contact Numbers
OCSD operates several adult custody facilities. Always use the current inmate record before visiting or mailing anything because inmates can be transferred after intake.
| Facility | Address | Phone | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Men’s & Women’s Jails | 550 N. Flower Street Santa Ana, CA 92703 | 714-647-4666 | Central jail complex for pretrial and sentenced inmates. |
| Intake Release Center (IRC) | 550 N. Flower Street Santa Ana, CA 92703 | 714-647-6063 | Major intake, booking and release location; IRC cashier also handles bail around the clock. |
| Theo Lacy Facility | 501 The City Drive South Orange, CA 92868 | 714-935-6940 | Large maximum-security Orange County custody facility. |
| James A. Musick Facility | 13420 Alton Parkway Irvine, CA 92618 | 949-855-2600 | Orange County custody facility in Irvine. |
Do not address inmate mail only to “Orange County Jail.” Use the facility shown in the live custody record together with the inmate’s name and booking number.
Orange County Jail Bail, Money and Release Process
Verify the amount before paying
OCSD instructs people posting bail to verify the inmate’s full name, booking number and full bail amount with Inmate Records before paying. A scheduled bail amount, an early booking figure and the amount actually required for release are not always the same.
IRC Cashier
550 N. Flower Street, Santa Ana
714-647-6085
The IRC cashier operates 24 hours a day. OCSD accepts bail bonds there for inmates housed in Orange County Sheriff’s jail facilities.
Theo Lacy Cashier
501 The City Drive South, Orange
714-935-6905
Current OCSD cashier information lists inmate-account service daily from 8:00 AM–5:00 PM and bond acceptance at Theo Lacy daily from 8:00 AM–2:00 PM.
Cash bail payment rules
- OCSD lists cash, qualifying bank cashier’s checks, personal checks, money orders and traveler’s checks among the methods accepted for bail at the IRC cashier, subject to detailed verification requirements.
- A bank cashier’s check must be for the exact payment amount and made payable as directed by OCSD.
- Personal checks have additional California identification, bank and amount restrictions.
- Company or business checks are not accepted.
- Bail for courts outside Orange County must be paid in cash according to OCSD’s current cashier instructions.
How long can release take?
OCSD’s custody FAQs state that bail information is usually available about 2–3 hours after booking. Once bail or bond is accepted, the Sheriff’s published guidance says the release process averages about 4 hours, although it may take roughly 2–6 hours. Do not arrange transportation based only on the payment time; confirm that release processing is complete.
How to Check Charges, Court Dates and the Criminal Case
The current Orange County jail search does not show charges. When your real question is “What was the person charged with?” or “When is court?”, use the court record rather than relying on an old jail-directory page.
- Find the inmate in OCSD custody and save the person’s correct legal name and booking information.
- Open Orange County Superior Court Case Access.
- Select Criminal and Traffic Case Access or use the court’s Case Name Search when you do not know the case number.
- Match the case carefully to the person in the jail record.
- Check the case number, available hearing information, courthouse or department and filed case activity.
The court cautions that online case information is provided for public access and is not itself the official certified court record. For legal filings, certified documents or unclear case identity, follow the court’s record-request process.
Orange County Jail Visiting Hours and Scheduling
Orange County currently limits public visiting to four visits per inmate each week, generally one visit per day Friday through Monday. Rules differ by facility, so first identify the inmate’s current housing location.
| Facility | Published visiting hours | Scheduling / information |
|---|---|---|
| Central Men’s & Women’s Jails | Friday–Monday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM; some housing locations have restricted hours. | 714-647-4543 Appointment required; schedule at least 24 hours ahead. |
| Intake Release Center | Friday–Monday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | 714-647-6050 Appointment required; schedule at least 24 hours ahead. |
| Theo Lacy Facility | Friday–Monday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | 714-935-6202 Appointment required; have inmate booking number and visitor information ready. |
| James A. Musick Facility | Friday–Monday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | 949-249-5059 Current OCSD instructions say appointments are not required at this time, but calling ahead is recommended. |
What visitors should know
- Bring valid government-issued photo identification; expired identification is not accepted.
- OCSD generally permits up to two adults and two minors for a visit, subject to the facility’s current rules.
- Visits last at least 30 minutes under the published facility rules.
- Cell phones, cameras, laptops and other electronic devices are prohibited in visiting areas.
- Visitors recently released from jail may be restricted for 60 days, with limited exceptions requiring approval.
- People who have served time in a California state prison for a felony may need prior approval before entering jail grounds under Penal Code requirements cited by OCSD.
- Housing moves, medical restrictions, facility incidents or disciplinary status can affect a scheduled visit.
Mail, Commissary Money, Phone Calls and Video Visits
How to address inmate mail
OCSD requires the inmate’s name and booking number on all mail, together with the sender’s name and return address. First confirm the current facility because each jail uses its own mailing address.
| Facility | Mailing address |
|---|---|
| Central Men’s Jail, Central Women’s Jail and IRC | Inmate Name + Booking Number 550 N. Flower Street Santa Ana, CA 92703 |
| Theo Lacy Facility | Inmate Name + Booking Number 501 City Drive South Orange, CA 92868 |
| James A. Musick Facility | Inmate Name + Booking Number 13420 Alton Parkway Irvine, CA 92618 |
Current OCSD mail rules allow correspondence on postcards or white plain/lined paper and limit ordinary correspondence to 10 items per envelope. Greeting cards, cardstock, colored paper, stickers, glitter, tape, staples, perfume, food, clothing and many other altered or non-paper items are prohibited.
Books, magazines and newspapers must follow OCSD’s publisher/approved-retailer rules. Do not take packages or ordinary inmate mail to a jail lobby.
Depositing money to an inmate account
- The IRC cashier is open 24 hours a day for inmate-account transactions.
- The Theo Lacy cashier currently lists inmate-account hours of 8:00 AM–5:00 PM daily.
- Money orders must be payable to County of Orange – Sheriff’s Department and include the inmate’s name and booking number.
- Personal checks, cashier’s checks and traveler’s checks are not accepted for ordinary inmate-account deposits.
- OCSD says deposited funds are generally made available about 30 minutes after the transaction is completed.
- An inmate account may hold a maximum balance of $500.
Commissary is separate from bail. OCSD’s Inmate Services information says inmates may order commissary up to twice a week, with delivery schedules depending on housing.
Phone calls and video visits
OCSD contracts with ViaPath Technologies for inmate phone calls and video visitation. Family and friends should use the Sheriff’s communication page first so they reach the current provider setup rather than an outdated vendor link.
Inmate Property and Other Practical Requests
If you need an inmate’s personal property, OCSD allows an inmate to authorize a property release. During regular visiting days and times, ask the information-desk deputy for a Property Release Form. The inmate must sign the release before the property can be turned over.
Do not leave before the process is completed. OCSD warns that if the recipient leaves before the signed property is produced, it can be returned to storage and the process may have to start again.
Prescription glasses or contact lenses have separate rules. The Sheriff’s custody FAQs indicate qualifying glasses or contacts may be accepted through the designated Central Men’s Jail area, but frames and other items are restricted. Call before bringing medical items.

Orange County, CA Jail Inmate Search FAQs
1. What is the official Orange County, CA jail inmate search?
The official lookup is the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Information System. It is accessed through the Sheriff’s Public Services Portal and should be the first source used to verify current OCSD custody.
2. Is the old OCSD “Who’s in Jail” search still used?
The Sheriff’s current public system is called the Inmate Information System. It now uses authentication through the Public Services Portal, so older instructions referring only to an open “Who’s in Jail” page may be outdated.
3. Do I need an account to search Orange County inmates?
Yes. OCSD says first-time users of the current Public Services Portal must create an account using an email address and password before accessing the Inmate Information System.
4. Why are inmate charges not shown in the Orange County jail search?
OCSD specifically states that the current version of its Inmate Information System does not provide inmate charges. Use Orange County Superior Court Case Access when you need filed criminal-case information and available hearing details.
5. Why can’t I find someone who was just arrested?
The person may still be going through transportation, medical screening, identification or booking. Retry the official search after intake has had time to finish, check the Booking Log and call Inmate Records at 714-647-4666 if the custody question remains unresolved.
6. Which facilities are included in the Orange County jail system?
The main OCSD adult custody facilities are the Central Men’s and Women’s Jails and Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, Theo Lacy Facility in Orange and James A. Musick Facility in Irvine.
7. How do I schedule an Orange County jail visit?
First confirm the inmate’s current facility and booking number. Central Jail, IRC and Theo Lacy currently use facility-specific scheduling numbers and generally require advance appointments. James A. Musick’s current page says scheduled appointments are not required at this time, although calling ahead is recommended.
8. What information must be included on Orange County inmate mail?
Include the inmate’s full name and booking number, use the mailing address for the current facility and include the sender’s name and return address. OCSD applies detailed restrictions to paper, cards, publications and other items, so review the current mail rules before sending anything unusual.
9. How much money can an Orange County jail inmate have in an account?
OCSD currently limits inmate accounts to a maximum balance of $500. The IRC cashier operates 24 hours a day, while Theo Lacy publishes separate cashier hours. Verify the inmate’s name and booking number before depositing funds.
10. How long can bail and release processing take?
OCSD FAQs say bail information is usually available about two to three hours after booking. After bail or bond is accepted, release averages about four hours but may take roughly two to six hours. Case-specific holds, court orders or processing issues can affect release.
