Find a Santa Barbara County Inmate and Verify Current Custody
For a Santa Barbara County jail inmate search, start with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Who Is In Custody system. It is the county’s official public lookup for people currently held in the Sheriff’s custody system and is more useful than relying on an old third-party jail roster.
- Open the official Sheriff’s custody search.
- Search by first name, last name, or the inmate’s CID number.
- Open the matching custody record and verify the person carefully.
- Save the CID, current housing location and other useful details shown.
- Use that information for visitation, mail, deposits, calls or court follow-up.
Official resources checked October 27, 2026. Custody, housing, court, visitation and release information can change, so recheck the live record before taking action.
How to Search the Santa Barbara County Jail Roster
Santa Barbara County does not require you to choose Main Jail or Northern Branch Jail before searching. Start with the Sheriff’s countywide custody lookup and let the current record tell you where the person is housed.
Use the official Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office custody search.
The public form supports first name, last name and inmate number, also called the CID.
Start with the spelling likely used at booking. If there is no result, retry a hyphenated surname, former surname or another known legal spelling.
Do not rely on a name alone. Compare the available custody details and other identifying information before assuming the record belongs to the person you are seeking.
The CID is useful for jail communication and is specifically required when addressing inmate mail.
Housing and custody can change. Search again immediately before visiting, mailing something or making plans around a possible release.
The Sheriff’s jail-information page says the custody area can provide public information including the inmate’s housing location, charges, custody status and CID number.
What to Check After You Find the Inmate
| Information | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CID number | County identifier used by the Sheriff’s custody system. | Save it accurately; it is needed for mail and can help with jail questions. |
| Housing location | Tells you whether the inmate is at the Santa Barbara campus or Northern Branch Jail. | Use the current facility’s visitation and mailing instructions. |
| Custody status | Helps determine whether the person remains in Sheriff’s custody. | Recheck before traveling or planning a pickup. |
| Charges | Shows allegations associated with custody information. | Do not treat jail charges as the final court disposition. |
| Court information | May help connect custody to the related criminal matter. | Use Santa Barbara Superior Court when you need the formal case or hearing information. |
If the Santa Barbara County Inmate Search Shows No Result
A missing record shortly after an arrest does not automatically mean the person was released. The Sheriff’s booking guidance says an arrested person may first spend time at a local police station while reports, interviews or testing are completed. That pre-booking process can take as long as about four hours in some situations before the person reaches county jail.
- Wait for booking to finish. A very recent arrest may still be in pre-booking, medical screening, fingerprinting, photographing or intake.
- Retry the name. Check spelling, hyphenated surnames, suffixes and other legal-name variations.
- Use the CID if known. It is more specific than a common name.
- Confirm the arresting jurisdiction. Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Lompoc, Goleta, Carpinteria and other communities may involve different police agencies even though county custody is operated by the Sheriff.
- Call the jail. Main Jail inmate information is available at 805-681-4260; Northern Branch Jail is 805-554-3100.
- Check the court if custody is no longer shown. A criminal case may continue after release.
- Check another system after transfer. California state-prison and federal custody use separate inmate locators.
Santa Barbara County Jail Locations
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office operates a county custody system with facilities in South County and North County. Do not assume the person remains at the facility closest to the arrest location.

Booking, Bail and Release: What Families Should Know
When a person reaches county jail, the Sheriff’s published booking process includes medical screening, searching for contraband, photographing, fingerprinting, entering personal information and charges, calculating bail and setting a court date. A classification interview can follow when the inmate is not released quickly.
Some people may qualify for release on their own recognizance. The Sheriff also notes that an intoxicated inmate may be held for up to 12 hours, and sometimes longer, until the person is considered sober enough for safe release.
Do not estimate bail from the charge alone
Santa Barbara Superior Court publishes bail schedules, including a current 2026 schedule, but a schedule is not a guarantee of what is required for one inmate. The live booking, judicial orders, multiple cases or other holds can affect release.
- Find the correct inmate first.
- Review the current custody and charge information.
- Confirm the current bail/release situation with the jail when necessary.
- Use the court record for case-specific judicial information.
- Do not send money to someone who contacts you unexpectedly claiming immediate payment is required.
The Sheriff’s Office has separately warned the public that it does not demand payments by telephone, request gift cards or threaten arrest for unpaid fines.
Santa Barbara Court Bail InformationHow to Check Court Dates and the Criminal Case
The jail lookup and the court record answer different questions. Use the Sheriff’s record for current custody. Use Santa Barbara Superior Court when your question is about the criminal case, hearing or later court activity.
Fastest practical route
- Locate the inmate and record the exact legal name and any available case information.
- Open the Santa Barbara Superior Court calendar search.
- For a near-term criminal hearing, use the criminal calendar search. The court publishes a 45-business-day criminal calendar window and allows searching by a name or case number.
- If you already know the court case number, use the Case Records Search.
- If online access does not provide what you need, use the court Records Department.
| Court records office | Address | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| South County | 118 E. Figueroa Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 | 805-882-4778 |
| North County | 312-E East Cook Street, Santa Maria, CA 93454 | 805-614-6414 |
The court states that case information provided online is not the official court record and that some confidential, sealed or remotely restricted records require another access method.
Visiting a Santa Barbara County Jail Inmate
First confirm the inmate’s current housing location because South County and Northern Branch Jail use different visiting procedures.
Santa Barbara / South County visitation
- Social visits are non-contact and use a visit window with telephone handsets.
- South County inmates are generally limited to two visits per week.
- Main Jail, IRC and Northwest housing have separate schedules linked from the Sheriff’s visitation page.
- Schedules can change without notice.
Northern Branch Jail visitation
- Visitors must register through the ViaPath system linked by the Sheriff’s Office.
- After approval, visitors can schedule an appointment with the inmate.
- The Sheriff’s current published window is Sunday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Appointments begin on the hour.
- Visitors are instructed to check in 30 minutes before the appointment using the same ID used during registration.
- Northern Branch inmates are currently limited to four visits per week.
Across the Sheriff’s visiting rules, a maximum of two visitors, including children, may visit at one time. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Valid photo identification is required, and visitors should arrive early.
How to Send Mail, Books and Photos
The correct mailing address depends on where the inmate is housed. Incoming mail must include the inmate’s name and CID number and must have a return address.
| Facility | Mailing format |
|---|---|
| Northern Branch Jail | Inmate Name, CID Number Santa Barbara County Northern Branch Jail 2301 Black Road Santa Maria, CA 93455 |
| Main Jail | Inmate Name, CID Number Santa Barbara County Jail 4436 Calle Real Santa Barbara, CA 93110 |
Important mail rules
- Ordinary inmate correspondence must be properly addressed and include a return address.
- Mail is inspected for contraband and security concerns.
- Do not enclose cash, money orders or checks addressed directly to the inmate.
- Do not include stamps, stickers, paper clips, staples, food, jewelry or other prohibited materials listed by the jail.
- Gang markings, threatening material and obscene or prohibited imagery can cause rejection.
Books and publications
Books are accepted only through an approved publishing or commercial source. The Sheriff currently allows properly addressed new softbound/paperback books, subscription newspapers and subscription magazines sent through a publisher, bookstore or reputable internet/mail-order company. Individually mailed books and magazines are not accepted except as permitted for attorneys and courts.
Photographs
The current jail rules allow up to five photographs in one piece of U.S. mail. The envelope should be marked “PHOTOGRAPHS,” and the inmate’s name, booking number and CID must be written on the back of each photo. Polaroids and photos larger than 4×6 inches are not allowed.

Depositing money
The Sheriff’s current inmate-deposit system uses TouchPay. Before depositing, locate the inmate and confirm the correct name and identifier.
| Method | Current Sheriff instructions |
|---|---|
| Online | Use TouchPayOnline through the Sheriff’s official inmate-deposit page. |
| Phone | 866-232-1899 |
| Site ID | 293110 |
| Kiosk | Kiosks are located at Main Jail and Northern Branch Jail and are listed as accessible 24 hours a day. |
| Kiosk payments | Cash and debit/credit cards are accepted under the Sheriff’s current instructions. |
Care packages
The Sheriff currently links families and friends to iCare for approved inmate care packages. Use the Sheriff’s deposit page to reach the approved service rather than relying on an advertisement or an unofficial vendor page.
Phone and tablet services
The Sheriff’s Programs Unit currently states that inmate telephones are available from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. Friends and family can purchase debit or prepaid time through GettingOut/Telmate. The Sheriff’s listed Telmate customer-care number is 866-516-0115.
Because rates, vendors and account options can change, start from the Sheriff’s Programs Unit or inmate-deposit page before paying.
Inmate Property
When someone is booked, jail staff inventory personal property and place accepted cash into an account that can be used for commissary and other purposes. Unused account funds are returned when the inmate is discharged.
For personal-property pickup, the Sheriff currently requires the inmate to authorize release of the property and the person picking it up to present valid government-issued photo identification. Published pickup times are Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Inmate Reception Center. Because property procedures can change, call Main Jail at 805-681-4260 before making a special trip.
