Find a Butte County Jail Inmate and Confirm Current Custody

If you are trying to find someone arrested in Oroville, Chico, Paradise, Gridley, Biggs or another part of Butte County, start with the Butte County Sheriff’s Office booking logs. One important limitation is easy to miss: the county publishes dated booking logs, not a continuously searchable live roster showing everyone who is still inside the jail.

The practical route is therefore: check the official booking log for the arrest period, identify the correct person and inmate number, then call the jail if you need to know whether that person is still in custody today.

Current jail phone530-552-1600

A booking or charge is not a conviction. Charges may change after filing, and a person listed in a past booking log may already have been released or transferred.

What Butte County Booking Logs Can Tell You

The Sheriff’s public booking documents are useful for establishing that a person was booked during a specific period. They commonly contain the following fields:

Record fieldWhat it meansHow to use it
Inmate numberIdentifier used in the jail record.Keep it when calling the jail or comparing records.
Inmate nameName under which the person was booked.Verify spelling and aliases carefully.
Birth dateDate of birth shown with the booking.Useful for separating people with similar names.
Booking date/timeWhen the jail recorded the booking.Helps connect the jail record to the correct arrest.
Charge codeCalifornia statute or other charge identifier.Use the court record for the formally filed case.
Charge descriptionShort description attached to the booking charge.Do not treat this as the final court disposition.
Reference numberInternal record reference associated with a charge.May help distinguish multiple entries.
Booking log ≠ live roster. Someone can appear in a weekly log and later be released on bail, released after processing, transferred, sentenced elsewhere or remain detained under another case or hold.

If the Inmate Does Not Appear in the Search

A missing name does not automatically mean there was no arrest. Work through these possibilities in order:

  • Booking is still being processed: a very recent arrest may not yet appear in the published weekly document.
  • You selected the wrong week: check the arrest date and open the neighboring date ranges.
  • Name variation: retry a legal surname, hyphenated name, middle name or known alias.
  • Released after booking: the person may appear in an older log but no longer be in custody.
  • Different county: confirm where the arrest actually occurred, especially near county boundaries.
  • State-prison transfer: use California’s CDCR incarcerated-person search if the person has entered state custody.
  • Federal custody: use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator for federal prisoners.
  • Need a live answer: call Butte County Jail at 530-552-1600.

Charges, Court Dates and Bail: Check the Right Record

The jail record and the court record answer different questions. The booking log shows what was recorded when the person entered custody. The Butte County Superior Court record is the better source for the criminal case after charges are filed.

How to check the court case

  1. Open the official Butte County Superior Court case search.
  2. Search for the person or use the case number if you already have it.
  3. Open the matching criminal case and compare the party information carefully.
  4. Review the available charges, case activity and hearing information.
  5. If online information is insufficient, contact the Criminal Division at 530-532-7011.

The Criminal Division handles misdemeanor and felony matters for the county at One Court Street, Oroville, CA 95965.

Bail

The Sheriff’s Corrections page states that the jail accepts cash, money orders, cashier’s checks or a bond from a licensed bail bondsman. Cashier’s checks and money orders should be payable to the specific court from which the person is being bailed out.

Before paying bail: confirm the correct person, booking, current amount and whether another case, warrant, probation/parole matter or other hold affects release. A posted amount does not guarantee immediate release.

Butte County Jail Visitation

The Sheriff’s Corrections Division states that inmates are generally allowed two 45-minute visits per week. Main Jail times depend on the person’s housing unit, so you should first confirm where the inmate is housed.

For most Main Jail housing, visiting is scheduled on Saturday and Sunday. The North Facility/Expansion Jail schedule also lists specific NORA units, and NORA 1 has Monday, Wednesday and Friday periods.

Check the official visiting-schedule page shortly before traveling because housing assignments and jail procedures can change.

The jail also states that convicted felons are not allowed on jail premises without prior written permission from the Jail Administrator.

Send Money and Use Commissary

The Sheriff’s Corrections page directs family and friends to Access Corrections for inmate-account deposits. Deposits can also be made at the jail lobby kiosk, which the county lists as available 24 hours a day, or by calling 866-345-1884.

DepositWeb/appPhoneCard kioskCash kiosk

$200–$300$11.95$13.95$11.95$4.00

The jail states that an inmate can spend up to $100 per week on commissary. Money must be in the inmate’s account before 4:00 p.m. Sunday for that week’s commissary ordering.

The October 2025 inmate handbook also says an inmate may receive only one internet commissary order per week, not exceeding $100.

Verify current deposit fees and commissary rules on the Sheriff’s Corrections page before paying.

How to Send Mail to a Butte County Jail Inmate

Address regular inmate correspondence as follows:

Inmate’s Full Name
7 Gillick Way
Oroville, CA 95965

The Sheriff’s current mail rules state that the inmate’s housing location and ID number are not necessary for normal correspondence.

Do not put these items in regular mail

  • Food
  • Greeting cards
  • Polaroid photographs
  • Stationery
  • Postage stamps
  • Cash or personal checks
  • Stickers, labels, lipstick, perfume, unknown substances or other material considered a security risk

Incoming mail is opened and searched for security reasons. The county says mail is processed on weekdays, excluding weekends and holidays.

Newspapers, magazines, periodicals and new paperback books must come directly from an approved book supplier. The Sheriff’s published mail rules specifically state that books/packages from Amazon are not accepted and hard-covered books are not allowed.

Phone Calls, Video Visits and Secure Messages

The Sheriff’s Corrections page states that inmate telephones are generally available between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Inmates make outgoing calls; jail staff do not accept incoming calls or take telephone messages for inmates.

ServicePublished rate / provider
Domestic inmate calls$0.07 per minute through the Sheriff’s listed phone provider
Video visitation$0.25 per minute
Secure email$0.25 per message
Picture secure email$2.05 per message

The Sheriff’s page links to ICSolutions for telephone services and GettingOut for video visitation. Rates and vendor arrangements can change, so check the current Corrections page before adding funds.

Release Information and Custody Notifications

Butte County links to VINE for custody-status notifications. This can be useful when you want an alert about a change rather than repeatedly checking booking documents.

The jail’s October 2025 handbook says a person ordered released after a court appearance will be released after the paperwork is processed and only if there are no other holds. The handbook warns that processing can take up to eight hours. A person who has completely served a sentence and has no holds is normally scheduled for release between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the final day.

Do not calculate a release time yourself. Court orders, holds, warrants, sentence calculations and administrative processing can affect when someone actually leaves custody. Confirm important release information directly with the jail.

Alternative Custody Programs

Butte County operates the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) and Alternative Custody Supervision (ACS) for eligible individuals. The Sheriff’s handbook explains that participation is discretionary and can depend on the current and prior charges, jail disciplinary history, a stable living environment in Butte County and past compliance with alternative-custody programs.

ACS uses electronic monitoring for qualifying participants. For current program questions, the Sheriff’s Contact page lists 530-538-7545 for ACS and SWAP.

Butte County Jail Inmate Search FAQs

1. Does Butte County have an online inmate search?

Butte County publishes official BCSO booking logs by date range rather than a continuously searchable live inmate roster. Use the booking logs to find a recent booking, then call the jail at 530-552-1600 when you need current custody confirmation.

2. How do I search the Butte County Jail roster by name?

Open the official BCSO Booking Logs page, select the date range covering the arrest, open the booking document and use your browser’s Find on Page function to search the person’s legal name. Verify the birth date, inmate number and booking date before relying on the match.

3. Does appearing in a booking log mean the person is still in jail?

No. A booking log records that a booking occurred during the listed period. The person may later have been released, transferred or held under a different status. Call the jail for current custody information.

4. What is the Butte County Jail phone number?

The current Butte County Sheriff’s Office Contact and Corrections pages list the jail number as 530-552-1600. Some older or continuing jail documents also display 530-538-7471, so use 530-552-1600 first.

5. Where is Butte County Jail located?

The Sheriff’s correctional complex is listed at 5 Gillick Way, Oroville, CA 95965. Inmate correspondence should be addressed to the inmate’s name at 7 Gillick Way, Oroville, CA 95965.

6. How do I find an inmate’s court date?

Use the Butte County Superior Court Case and Calendar Information portal for the filed criminal case and hearing information. The Criminal Division is at One Court Street, Oroville, and its phone number is 530-532-7011.

7. How much visitation does a Butte County Jail inmate receive?

The Sheriff’s Corrections Division states that inmates are generally allowed two 45-minute visits per week. The exact start time depends on the housing unit, and the North Facility/NORA schedule has additional unit-specific periods.

8. How do I send money to an inmate?

The jail directs deposits to Access Corrections, a 24-hour lobby kiosk or the Access Corrections toll-free number at 866-345-1884. The Sheriff’s published fee table varies by deposit amount and payment method, so verify the current fee before paying.

9. What can I mail to a Butte County Jail inmate?

Regular letters may be sent to the inmate at 7 Gillick Way, Oroville, CA 95965. The jail does not permit items such as greeting cards, Polaroid photos, cash, personal checks, stamps or stationery in incoming regular mail. New books must follow the Sheriff’s supplier and format rules.

10. What should I do if I cannot find the person in a Butte County booking log?

Check the correct booking week and name spelling first. If the arrest was very recent, allow for processing and call the jail. If the person may have been transferred, check California CDCR for state-prison custody or the Federal Bureau of Prisons for federal custody.

Fastest practical route: use the Sheriff’s booking log to identify the booking, save the inmate number and booking details, call 530-552-1600 if live custody matters, and use the Superior Court portal when you need the filed criminal case rather than only the arrest record.
