Find an Aiken County Inmate and Verify Current Custody

For an Aiken County jail inmate search, the best starting point is the official Aiken County Government Detainee Public Search. It is designed for people who are currently being detained at the Aiken County Detention Center, so it is much more useful for a live custody check than an old arrest page or commercial people-search website.

Fastest route: Open the county’s detainee search, enter the person’s legal last name, add the first name if known, and use the sex or race filters only when you need to narrow several similar results. If no record appears, do not immediately assume the person was released; follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Official information and procedures checked October 27, 2026. Custody, bond, housing, visitation and release information can change quickly, so use the live county record for the final same-day decision.

How to Search the Aiken County Jail Roster

The county’s public search is simpler than many third-party jail directories. The current form requires a last name and also provides fields for first name, sex and race.

  1. Open the official Detainee Public Search. Use the Aiken County Government link above rather than a sponsored background-check page.
  2. Enter the last name. The current county form marks the last-name field as required.
  3. Add the first name when useful. This can help when several detainees share the same surname.
  4. Use optional filters carefully. Sex and race filters can narrow a large result list, but leave them broad if you are unsure.
  5. Submit the search. Review the returned record carefully and make sure you have the correct person before using the information for a visit, deposit, bond inquiry or other action.
  6. Recheck time-sensitive details. Jail status can change after a bond hearing, court order, release or transfer.
Important search limitation: Aiken County explicitly says the public detainee search contains information only on people currently being detained. It should not be treated as a historical arrest database or complete criminal-history search.

Can you search by booking number?

The current public Aiken County detainee-search form displays a required last-name field plus first-name, sex and race filters. It does not currently show a public booking-number search field on that form. Some third-party pages claim otherwise, so use the actual county interface rather than assuming those instructions are correct.

Do not treat a jail entry as a conviction

An arrest, booking or listed criminal charge is not proof that a person committed an offense. Charges may later be amended, dismissed or resolved differently in court. Use the South Carolina court record when you need the filed case or eventual disposition.

If the Inmate Does Not Appear

A blank Aiken County inmate search can have several explanations. Work through these in order before paying for another lookup service.

Possible reasonBest next step
Arrest happened very recentlyBooking and intake may still be processing. Search again and, if confirmation is urgent, call the Detention Center at 803-642-2040.
Name is entered differentlyTry the legal surname, alternate spelling, hyphenated name, maiden name or suffix.
Person was releasedThe public county search is for current detainees, so a released person may no longer appear. Check the related court case or request an older record if needed.
Person was transferred to state prisonUse the South Carolina Department of Corrections inmate search.
Arrest happened in another county or stateSearch the jail serving the actual arrest location. Augusta, Georgia, for example, is not Aiken County.
You need the court case, not custodyUse the South Carolina Judicial Branch Aiken County case-record system.

Aiken County’s own public FAQ also directs people who need to know whether someone is in jail to call the Detention Center at 803-642-2040.

The Sheriff’s Office describes the detention center as the local facility for people awaiting trial and certain short-term sentenced inmates. The detention center and Sheriff’s administrative office are at different addresses, so use 435 Wire Road for detention-center business unless the specific service directs you to Hampton Avenue.

Bond, Charges and Court Records

Use the jail search to answer the custody question. Use the court system when you need the criminal case, hearing information or later disposition.

Aiken County Bond Court

Bond hearings are conducted at the Aiken County Detention Center at 435 Wire Road. The county’s current Bond Hearings Court page lists:

  • Monday-Friday: Bond Court office hours 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; hearings listed at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sunday and observed holidays: office hours 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.; hearings listed at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Verify the hearing time before traveling. A separate current Sheriff’s Bond Court page lists the first weekday hearing at 10:00 a.m. rather than 11:00 a.m. Because two official pages conflict, call Bond Court at 803-642-2044 for the current schedule.

The Sheriff’s page also currently says bond payments are not accepted after 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday or after 2:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Confirm the inmate’s actual bond eligibility, current amount, holds and accepted payment method before taking money to the facility.

Aiken County is in South Carolina’s Second Judicial Circuit. The Aiken County Courthouse is at 109 Park Avenue SE, Aiken, SC 29801; the Judicial Branch lists the courthouse office number as 803-642-1715.

Visiting an Inmate

Aiken County inmate visitation is currently video based. Visitors may schedule an on-site video visit or, when available for the inmate and housing unit, a remote visit from home.

  1. Confirm that the person is still held at Aiken County Detention Center.
  2. Open the official ViaPath/GTL VisitMe scheduling portal.
  3. Create or sign in to your visitor account.
  4. Locate the inmate and choose an available visit option.
  5. Select an available date and time. Housing-unit classification or disciplinary status can affect availability.
  6. For an on-site visit, arrive at least 15 minutes early.
  7. Bring acceptable photo identification. The Sheriff’s page refers to student, state or government-issued photo ID.

The detention center also has a ViaPath scheduling kiosk in the lobby. The Sheriff’s current rules allow no more than two adults to visit an inmate at one time. The inmate may refuse a visit, and visits can be denied for rule violations, disruptive behavior, suspected intoxication or a security concern.

Clothing must meet facility standards. Shoes and shirts are required, and the visitation deputy may deny entry for inappropriate attire.

Commissary and Sending Money

The detention center currently provides three practical ways to place funds on an inmate’s commissary account:

  • Money order by mail: Money orders may be mailed to the detention center for deposit to the intended inmate’s account.
  • Lobby kiosk: The detention-center lobby kiosk accepts cash and credit-card deposits.
  • Online: Internet deposits and approved inmate package orders are available through JailPackStore.

The Sheriff’s current commissary page says inmates may order commissary once per week and lists a $45 maximum purchase per order. That is a purchase limit, not necessarily a deposit limit. Commissary delivery is normally made on Wednesday, although the facility warns that schedules can change for holidays or other circumstances.

Available items can include snacks, hygiene products, writing materials, over-the-counter medication, undergarments and other approved products.

Friends and family should not mail an ordinary care package directly to the jail. The facility says direct care packages from family or friends are not accepted. Use the approved vendor’s package selections instead.

Phone Calls From Aiken County Inmates

Inmates can make collect telephone calls from their housing areas. When an inmate calls, a recorded message identifies the call as coming from the Aiken County Detention Center.

  • The Sheriff’s current page lists a 15-minute maximum call length.
  • Calls are subject to monitoring and recording.
  • You are not charged for a collect call unless you accept it through the telephone prompts.
  • If your number is blocked, the problem may involve ViaPath or your telephone provider.

For prepaid calling, the detention center recommends a ViaPath/ConnectNetwork AdvancePay account. The Sheriff’s current information lists 1-800-483-8314 for creating or funding an AdvancePay account.

For problems receiving calls, the Sheriff’s Office currently lists ViaPath support at 1-866-230-7761 or 877-650-4249.

How to Mail an Aiken County Inmate

The Sheriff’s current mail illustration directs correspondence to the detainee at the detention center. A practical address format is:

Detainee Full Name
Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, SC
435 Wire Road
Aiken, SC 29801

Current personal-mail restrictions

  • No cash or personal checks.
  • Maximum 10 pages per envelope.
  • Page size no larger than 8.5 × 11 inches.
  • The current restrictions list says greeting cards are not accepted.
  • Written or typed pages, drawings and permitted photos may be included.
  • No Polaroid photos.
  • No glitter, glue, tape, 3D elements or electronic components.
  • No prohibited sexual, gang, illegal, violent, drug or alcohol-related content.
  • No nude or partially clothed photographs.

The facility says inmates may possess up to 50 photographs, with photos no larger than 4 × 6 inches.

Money orders sent in inmate mail

The detention center says money orders included in inmate mail are processed for deposit into the intended inmate’s commissary account. Deposits are generally made within 24 hours of receipt, excluding weekends and holidays. Only money orders are accepted for this mailed-deposit method.

Books and publications

New paperback publications may be sent directly from a publisher or nationally recognized distributor. The current rules state that books must not exceed 7 × 10 inches or be thicker than 2 inches. Publications containing prohibited metal objects or other restricted material can be rejected.

Medical Care and Bringing Medication

The Sheriff’s Office says medical care is available to inmates 24 hours a day through a contract medical provider. A physician regularly sees inmates at the facility, and outside medical transportation is arranged when necessary.

Families cannot automatically obtain a detainee’s medical information. The medical team must follow health-information privacy rules and may need the inmate’s signed consent before discussing health details with relatives.

Medication rules published by the facility

  • Medication must be prescribed by a doctor.
  • It must have been prescribed within the previous 30 days and must not be expired.
  • Medication must be in the original bottle.
  • Narcotics are not accepted.
  • Prescription glasses must use nonmetal frames.
  • Prescription contact lenses require a copy of the prescription.

If medication or urgent medical information needs to reach the facility, call 803-642-2040 before traveling so staff can tell you the current intake procedure.

Older Arrest Records, Incident Reports and FOIA Requests

The live detainee search is not the right tool for every historical record. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Records Section maintains records of current and past cases investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.

Records Section: 420 Hampton Avenue NE, Aiken, SC 29801 · 803-642-1773 · Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., excluding county holidays.

Incident report copies

The Sheriff’s current FAQ says a copy of an incident report can be requested at the Records lobby with photo identification. The listed charge is $10, payable by exact cash or money order. Crime victims requesting their own report are not charged when they provide the required identification.

Online FOIA request

The Sheriff’s Office also provides an online Freedom of Information Act / incident-report request form. Fees may apply for searching, producing or copying records depending on the request.

South Carolina state-prison search

The South Carolina Department of Corrections search covers people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC. It does not replace a county-jail search and does not cover people held only in county detention facilities.

SCDC currently supports searches by SCDC ID, SID, first name and last name and also provides a phonetic-match option.

Aiken vs. Augusta matters: North Augusta is in South Carolina, while Augusta is across the state line in Georgia. If the arrest actually happened in Augusta-Richmond County, use our Richmond County Jail inmate search guide instead of repeatedly searching Aiken County.

  • Use the current mail rules before sending photographs, money orders or publications.
  • Use court records for the criminal case and final disposition.
