Find an Essex County Jail Inmate in Newark, New Jersey

For an Essex County Jail inmate search, use the Essex County Department of Corrections inmate lookup for the Essex County Correctional Facility (ECCF) in Newark, New Jersey. The official public tool is an inmate lookup rather than a simple static alphabetical jail roster.

Important: this guide covers Essex County, New Jersey. Search results for the same phrase can also lead to Essex County jails in New York or Massachusetts.

What the Jail Lookup Is—and Is Not

The inmate lookup is primarily a custody and booking tool. Use it to establish whether Essex County Corrections is the right agency before traveling to Newark, sending money, mailing correspondence or trying to arrange a visit.

Which record should you use?
Your questionBest sourceWhy
Is the person currently in Essex County jail?Essex DOC Inmate LookupCurrent county-custody route.

What happened in the criminal case?New Jersey CourtsCourt records follow the case after jail custody changes.

A booking or listed charge is not a conviction. Charges can be amended, dismissed or resolved differently in court. Use the jail record for custody and use the Judiciary for the legal case.

If You Cannot Find the Inmate

Do not jump from “no result” to “the person was never arrested.” Work through the possibilities in this order:

Possible reasonWhat to do
Booking is still processingRetry the Essex DOC lookup after additional intake time. For an urgent custody check, call 973-274-7500.
Name is entered differentlyTry the legal surname, fewer name fields, a suffix variation, maiden/prior name or another known spelling.
Person was releasedMove to the New Jersey court record if you need the continuing criminal-case status.
Transferred to state prisonSearch the NJDOC Offender Search rather than the county lookup.
Wrong Essex CountyConfirm that the arrest occurred in Essex County, New Jersey—not Essex County, NY or MA.
Federal custodyUse the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator if the matter became federal custody.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office confirms that it and Essex County Corrections are independent agencies. For incarceration information, the Sheriff directs the public to ECCF at 973-274-7500. For Sheriff non-emergency matters, including warrant questions, the Sheriff lists 973-621-4111. See the official Sheriff FAQ.

Essex County Correctional Facility Visitation

Family visits are window visits and are scheduled according to the inmate’s building. The facility says slots are limited and handled on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving late can mean there is no remaining visit slot.

Housing locationVisit daysHours
Buildings 2 & 5Wednesday and Saturday10:00 AM–1:00 PM and 2:30 PM–5:00 PM
Buildings 3 & 4Thursday and Sunday10:00 AM–1:00 PM and 2:30 PM–5:00 PM
InfirmaryFriday10:00 AM–1:00 PM and 2:30 PM–5:00 PM

Before You Travel

  • Use the inmate lookup first to identify the correct housing/building.
  • Adults must bring valid government-issued photo identification showing a current address.
  • A passport user must also provide current address documentation such as a phone, cable or utility bill.
  • Every minor under 18 must have a birth certificate and be accompanied by an adult who satisfies the adult ID requirements.
  • If the accompanying adult is not the parent or legal guardian, the facility requires a notarized permission letter from the parent/legal guardian in addition to the birth certificate.
  • All adult and minor visitors must clear the facility’s security screening and metal detectors.

Visitors can be searched and may have to remove belts, footwear or accessories that trigger screening. Visitors who appear intoxicated, behave disruptively or fail to follow facility rules can be refused entry.

Key dress-code rules
  • No bare feet.
  • No hats or scarves except permitted religious head coverings.
  • No crop tops or garments exposing the chest, back, stomach, midriff or underarms.

  • No clothing displaying gang signs, obscenities, drugs or alcohol.
  • No one-piece body suits or clothing that excessively accentuates the body.

Check the official Essex County family-visitation page before leaving home, especially around holidays, weather events or facility lockdowns.

How to Send Mail to an Essex County Inmate

Essex County changed its non-privileged inmate-mail process effective December 1, 2025. Regular personal correspondence is now sent to a Pigeonly Corrections processing center rather than directly to the jail.

Regular Personal Mail

Inmate Name – Booking Number
Essex County DOC – 2200
PO Box 96777
Las Vegas, NV 89193

Pigeonly opens non-privileged mail, scans it into a digital color copy, prints the copy and sends the reproduction to Essex County DOC. The original is temporarily stored and then securely destroyed.

ItemOfficial size/limit
EnvelopeNo larger than 4 × 9½ inches
Letter paperNo larger than 8½ × 11 inches
Greeting cardNo larger than 5 × 7 inches
Postcard5 × 7 inches
Photographs4 × 6 inches; maximum 10 photos per parcel

A return address is required. Non-privileged material can include letters and drawings, greeting cards, postcards, qualifying 4×6 photographs and unbound newsletters.

Legal, Privileged and Official Mail

Legal and privileged correspondence is not supposed to go to the Las Vegas processing address. Approved privileged senders send it directly to the facility:

Inmate Name – Booking Number
354 Doremus Avenue
Newark, NJ 07105

Attorneys and other privileged senders must follow the facility’s authentication process. Legal mail should be clearly identified as legal/confidential correspondence. If legal mail is mistakenly sent to the Pigeonly processing center, Essex County’s instructions state that it will be returned to the sender.

Books, Magazines and Periodicals

Printed materials sent directly by a publisher, magazines, periodicals and permitted soft-covered books continue to go directly to 354 Doremus Avenue, Newark, NJ 07105, with the inmate’s name and booking number.

Mail items that can be rejected

The official mail guide identifies prohibited or unsuitable items including glitter, rhinestones, stickers, glued items, wax-paper letters, shaped-cut photographs or papers, sticky notes, tokens, coins, toys, key chains, blank envelopes or stationery, unused stamps, newspaper clippings, bubble/express/priority-style envelopes, stapled items, oversized or electronic greeting cards, Polaroid photographs, third-party photo-vendor prints, bulk mail, cash, gift cards and credit cards. Do not send original identity documents such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses or Social Security cards through the scanning address.

How to Send Money to an Inmate

Before depositing money, search the inmate again and confirm that the person is still in Essex County custody. A release or transfer can change the correct payment destination.

Money Sent by Mail

Essex County states that an inmate may receive:

  • Postal money orders
  • Bank/redeemable money orders
  • Cashier’s checks
  • Certified checks

Traveler’s Express and store money orders are not accepted. Address mailed funds to the inmate’s name and booking number or Jail ID number at:

Essex County Correctional Facility
Inmate Name and Booking Number or Jail ID Number
354 Doremus Avenue
Newark, NJ 07105

Lobby Kiosk

The Visitors’ Lobby Kiosk accepts cash, debit cards and credit cards; personal checks are not accepted. The DOC lists kiosk availability Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM.

The DOC also links to ConnectNetwork for online payments. Confirm the inmate and correct account/service before submitting a payment because phone funding and inmate trust/commissary funding can serve different purposes.

Bail, Release Information and Scam Protection

The Essex County Department of Corrections states that bail is accepted at the Correctional Facility from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, five days a week. Because court orders, holds and release conditions can change, confirm the current amount and eligibility before traveling or paying.

Do not pay an “ankle monitor release fee” to a caller. Essex County has published a warning about scammers pretending to be Correctional Facility or Sheriff’s Office employees and claiming that an inmate can receive early release after payment for an ankle monitor. The county says the public is not responsible for paying inmate ankle-monitor costs and ECCF does not request inmate-service payments through electronic cash apps or third-party payment platforms. For legitimate release or correctional-service verification, call 973-274-7826.

A scheduled or expected release is not always an immediate physical departure. Another hold, a new court order, transfer paperwork or release processing can affect timing. Recheck the live custody information before driving to the facility.

How to Check the Criminal Court Case

The jail lookup tells you about custody; it is not the best place to determine the final status of a criminal case. Essex County Superior Court matters are handled through the New Jersey Judiciary.

Start with the inmate record.
Write down the full displayed name and any booking, charge or case information available.
Open New Jersey Courts.
Go to NJCourts.gov and choose the public “Find a Case” resources.
Choose the correct case type.
Superior Court criminal cases and municipal matters use different public systems. Select the search that matches the charge/court.
Compare identifiers carefully.
A name alone may match more than one person. Compare county, case number, charge information and available dates.

The Essex County Sheriff FAQ also directs court-date questions to the court clerk and lists the Court Administrator at 973-776-9300, extensions 55701/55702.

Remember: arrest, booking, a mugshot or a listed charge does not establish guilt. The court record is the better source for disposition, dismissal, plea, conviction and sentencing information.

If the Person Was Transferred Out of Essex County

New Jersey State Prison

If a person disappears from the Essex County lookup after sentencing or transfer, search the New Jersey Department of Corrections Offender Information system. NJDOC describes its search as the resource for people in state corrections custody and may provide status, location and sentence-related information.

Custody Notifications Through New Jersey VINE

New Jersey VINE can be useful when you need ongoing custody-status information rather than repeatedly checking a jail page. The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General describes VINE as a free service for custody information and notifications, including release or transfer events.

New Jersey VINE telephone access: 1-877-846-3465. You can also use VINELink. Registration can use identifying information such as the person’s name, date of birth or SBI number when known.

Phone Calls Not Reaching Family?

The Essex County DOC currently advises that some facility calls may be incorrectly marked as spam or blocked by telephone providers. Its posted notice identifies 862-294-0030 and recommends asking your telephone provider to remove that number from spam or block lists if legitimate facility calls are not coming through.
