Find a Kent County Jail Inmate and Check Current Custody
If you are trying to find someone who was arrested in Grand Rapids, Wyoming or elsewhere in Kent County, start with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office inmate lookup. The official Web Jail Viewer covers people booked into the Kent County Correctional Facility (KCCF) and is the most direct place to check current county-jail custody.
You do not need to search multiple inmate-directory websites. For most searches, you need the person’s complete last name. A full first name and booking-date range are optional filters. After you identify the correct booking, this guide explains what to do next for bond, visits, phone calls, mail, money, court records, older records and release notifications.
How to Search the Kent County Jail Roster
- Open the official Kent County Web Jail Viewer.
Use the county-operated inmate lookup rather than an unofficial people-search site. - Enter the complete last name.
The current Booking Search Query specifically requires a complete last name to begin a search. - Add the full first name if needed.
This is optional but helps separate people who share the same surname. - Add a booking-date range only when useful.
The viewer provides optional “Booking From Date” and “Booking To Date” fields. - Run the search and compare the matching records carefully.
Check identifying details and booking information before assuming you found the correct person. - Verify important information before acting.
For a recent arrest, bond payment, release or other time-sensitive issue, call the inmate information line at 616-632-6300, Option 1.
What the Kent County Inmate Lookup Can Show
Kent County describes its Web Jail Viewer as a public-access system for people booked into KCCF. Available records may include descriptive information about the inmate, a mugshot and offenses listed by the arresting agency.
| Information | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Name and identifying information | Use it to make sure you have the correct person, especially when names are common. |
| Booking information | Helps confirm that the person has been processed into Kent County custody. |
| Mugshot, when published | Can provide another identity check, but it should not be treated as evidence of guilt. |
| Listed offenses or charges | Shows the offenses associated with the booking. Use the court record for the formal case status. |
| Current custody information | Useful for deciding whether to contact the county jail, a court, MDOC or another correctional system. |
KCCF is Kent County’s central booking and pre-arraignment facility. The Sheriff’s Office says more than 30 law-enforcement agencies use the facility, so someone arrested by a city police agency in Kent County may ultimately be booked at the county correctional facility rather than appearing on a separate city-jail roster.
If you are unsure how city arrests and county bookings connect, see our city jail inmate search guide.
No Inmate Found? Check These Possibilities
A zero-result search does not always mean the person was never arrested. Use the person’s situation to decide where to check next.
| Situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Arrest happened very recently | Allow time for transport and intake, then search again or call 616-632-6300. |
| Name may be entered differently | Check the complete legal surname, spelling, suffix and full first name. |
| Person may have posted bond | Check the court case or contact the jail for current status. |
| Person may have been transferred to Michigan state custody | Use the Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS offender search. |
| Person may be in another Michigan county | Identify the arresting county and search that county’s sheriff or jail roster. |
| You need an older booking record | Use court records or submit a Kent County public-record request. |
| Federal custody is possible | Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator. |
For a broader explanation of county jail versus state-prison records, use our Michigan inmate search guide. Michigan DOC’s OTIS includes qualifying prisoners, parolees and probationers under state supervision, but it specifically does not list people who are only being held in a county jail or city lockup.
Bond, Bail and Release in Kent County
If the court has set a bond, Kent County says bond can be paid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Jail Processing Office next to the visitor entrance.
Cash or 10% bond
- Pay the full amount for a cash bond, or 10% when the court has specifically set a 10% bond.
- Kent County states that a qualifying 10% bond can result in 90% being returned if the defendant appears in court, subject to applicable court fees or fines.
- A cash bond may be returned when court requirements are satisfied, again subject to court-ordered deductions.
- If the defendant fails to appear, bond money may be forfeited.
Current payment methods listed by Kent County
- Cash
- Credit card; processing fees may apply
- Cashier’s check payable to Kent County Sheriff’s Office
- Money order payable to Kent County Sheriff’s Office
Personal checks are not accepted, and Kent County states that split payment methods are not permitted for a single bond transaction.
Surety bond
A private bonding company may guarantee the defendant’s court appearance. The company normally charges its own non-refundable fee, and Kent County is not a party to that private agreement.
Check Kent County’s current inmate bonding instructions.
Kent County Jail Visitation
Kent County provides both onsite and online video visitation. The county changed onsite visitation hours effective April 6, 2026, so older websites may still show outdated evening onsite hours.
| Visit type | Current published hours | Current published cost |
|---|---|---|
| Onsite | Daily: 8–11 a.m. and 1–5 p.m. | First onsite video visit each week is free; additional visits are listed at $0.14 per minute, up to 30 minutes. |
| Offsite video | Daily: 8–11 a.m., 1–5 p.m. and 7–10 p.m. | $7.50 per 25-minute visit. |
The jail has daily lockdown periods from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 5–7 p.m.. Visits may also be delayed or canceled because of an unplanned facility lockdown or another operational issue.

Mail, Phone Calls and Tablet Messages
Personal mail: use the Florida scanning address
Since April 1, 2025, Kent County Correctional Facility no longer accepts ordinary personal letters, books or magazines mailed directly to the jail. Personal letters, postcards and greeting cards are sent to Smart Communications for scanning and electronic delivery to the inmate’s tablet.
Smart Communications
[Inmate Full Name and Booking/ID Number]
PO Box 9216
Seminole, FL 33775-9195
Print the inmate’s full legal name and Booking/ID number clearly. Kent County says scanned personal mail is typically made available on the inmate’s tablet within 24–72 hours after it reaches the processing center.
Books and magazines are not accepted as personal mail, including packages sent directly from retailers. Legal mail follows a separate process and is still sent directly to the correctional facility.
Phone calls
- Inmate phones are available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Calls are outgoing; the facility does not accept incoming calls or messages for inmates.
- Kent County currently lists calls through Smart Communications at $0.09 per minute.
- Calls may be monitored or recorded.
- To block unwanted inmate calls, call 616-632-6400 and select Option 2 for a supervisor.
Tablet access
- Facility tablets are generally available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Incoming electronic messages are currently listed at $0.50 each.
- Incoming pictures are currently listed at $1.00 each.
- Some tablet content is free; paid content is currently listed at $0.05 per minute.
- Images and messages are monitored. Nudity, violence and image collages are not allowed.
Check Kent County’s current mail, phone and tablet rules.
Add Money, Commissary and Care Packages
Before making a deposit, use the inmate lookup to confirm the person’s current booking and identity. Money deposited to the wrong inmate account can be difficult to recover.
Inmate account deposits
| Current Kent County limit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Maximum per transaction | $500 |
| Maximum transactions per day | 3 |
| Maximum daily deposit | $1,500 |
| Weekly commissary purchases | Up to $150 |
| Family/friend care packages | Up to $150 per week |
Transaction fees may apply. Kent County currently provides these funding routes:
- At the jail: electronic kiosks in the visitor and processing lobbies.
- By phone: 866-232-1899.
- Online: the county links to the TouchPay payment portal.
- Cashier’s checks or money orders: may be brought directly to the facility under the county’s current instructions.
Eligible inmates can purchase food and personal items through commissary. The facility also provides basic admission supplies, and qualifying indigent inmates can receive scheduled indigent kits containing basic hygiene and writing materials.
Approved care packages can be ordered through the county’s listed iCare service. Always verify the inmate before placing an order.
See Kent County’s current inmate support services.
Check Charges, Court Dates and Older Records
The jail viewer answers a custody and booking question. It is not a substitute for the official court record. Charges can be amended, dismissed or resolved after the jail booking is created.
For a Kent County court case
- Identify the person and booking through the jail viewer.
- Open the Kent County court record search.
- Search for the appropriate criminal case.
- Compare the name, court and case information with the jail booking.
- Use the court record for hearing dates, case status and formal court activity.
Kent County’s public-record information states that its 17th Circuit Court name search includes criminal cases going back to 1996 and requires a date of birth for criminal name searches.
Need an older jail or sheriff record?
If the person is no longer on the current roster and you need a public record maintained by Kent County, you can submit a Freedom of Information Act request.
- Open the Kent County FOIA page.
- Describe the record clearly, including the person’s name, relevant dates and the department likely to hold the record.
- Submit the request online, by mail, fax or hand delivery.
- Save the request or FOIA identification number so you can check its status.
Kent County states that FOIA requests are generally processed within 5 business days, although a 10-business-day extension may be used. Fees can apply for labor, copying, postage or related processing. If an estimated fee exceeds $50, the county may require a deposit of up to half of the estimated total before proceeding.
Get Notified About Release or Transfer
If you need continuing custody-status updates instead of manually searching the jail roster repeatedly, Michigan VINE provides free custody information and notification services.
Users can register for available notifications such as release or transfer updates. Michigan lists the VINE information number as 800-770-7657.
Medical, Mental Health and Inmate Programs
Kent County states that nursing services are available around the clock and that trained clinicians provide mental-health assessment and care. The correctional facility also offers education, recovery programming, religious services, reentry-related support and eligible inmate work opportunities.
If you are concerned about an inmate showing signs of depression, suicidal thoughts or another serious mental-health issue, contact correctional staff immediately. Kent County publishes a Jail Mental Health Services Hotline at 616-632-6222.
The facility also lists more than 20 rehabilitation programs and provides medical and mental-health care, substance-use-disorder treatment, court transport and reentry planning.
