Find a St. Clair County Inmate and Check Current Custody
If someone may be held in St. Clair County, Michigan, start with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office inmate lookup rather than a private people-search site. The county search covers current booking records and lets you search by last name, first name or booking number.
- Agency: St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office
- Facility: St. Clair County Intervention & Detention Center
- Address: 1170 Michigan Rd., Port Huron, MI 48060
- General phone: 810-987-1700
- Search accepts: Last name, first name or booking number
- Best first step: Check the official current-custody database before calling the jail.
How to Search the St. Clair County Jail Roster
- Open the official St. Clair County inmate lookup.
- Enter the person’s last name, first name, or booking number. You only need one search field to begin.
- If you are unsure of the complete surname, the Sheriff’s Office says a single letter can be entered. For example, entering A in the last-name field returns people whose last name begins with A.
- Select Search and review the matching current booking records.
- Confirm that you have the correct person before using a record for visitation, money, mail or court research. Save the inmate ID or booking number when the record provides one.
If the Inmate Does Not Appear
A blank search result does not automatically mean the person was never arrested. Work through these checks before assuming the person is no longer in custody.
- Check the spelling of the legal first and last name.
- Try only the last name instead of entering several fields at once.
- If you know the booking number, search with that number.
- Allow time for a very recent arrest to move through transport, identification and booking.
- Check whether the person may already have been released.
- Check whether the person was transferred to Michigan state custody, federal custody or immigration detention.
- If the arrest happened outside St. Clair County, search the jail for the county that actually received the person.
| What you are trying to find | Correct system | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Current St. Clair County jail inmate | St. Clair County Inmate Lookup | The person may currently be housed in the county jail. |
| Michigan state prisoner, parolee or probationer | Michigan OTIS | The person has moved into Michigan Department of Corrections supervision. |
| Criminal court case or hearing | MiCOURT Case Search | You need a case number, hearing information or court-case status rather than jail custody. |
| ICE detainee | ICE Online Detainee Locator | The person may be held under federal immigration authority. |
Michigan OTIS should not be used as a substitute for the St. Clair County jail search. MDOC specifically states that OTIS does not contain people held only in county jails or city lockups.

Personal-mail rules to know
- Use the inmate’s name and inmate ID.
- Include a return address on the envelope.
- Mail cannot be larger than 8½ × 11 inches.
- Material must be no thicker than light card stock and must be capable of passing through a sheet-fed scanner.
- Incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband and rule violations.
- Do not include cash, checks, money orders, stamps, blank envelopes or stationery.
- No packages, stickers, address labels, homemade cards, musical cards, raised decorations, glitter, glue, paint or whiteout.
- Non-white envelopes or paper are not allowed under the published rules.
- Pictures are the only permitted enclosure.
- Up to 10 photographs may be included per package, and they must be printed on photo paper.
- Internet printouts, colored pages and prohibited provocative material are not accepted.
The county warns that standard non-legal mail that does not meet its guidelines may be destroyed rather than returned.
Books and publications
Newspapers, magazines and other permitted publications must be ordered directly from a publisher, bookstore or book club. Books must have soft covers. The jail’s current information specifically states that materials from Amazon.com are not accepted. Inmates may keep up to three books or publications in their cell at one time.
Bond and Release Information
Bond rules depend on whether the court is open.
- During regular county business hours, the county instructs that bond be paid at the appropriate court.
- When the court is closed, the jail states that cash bonds and credit cards are accepted, subject to its rules.
- The after-hours procedure does not apply in the same way to licensed bonding agents.
- For bond information, call 810-987-1720 before making payment or traveling.
- The county also lists GovPayNow for approved credit-card payments.
Because a bond amount or release decision may change after a court hearing, verify the person’s current custody status and the current bond instructions before paying.
Find the Inmate’s Court Case or Court Date
The jail roster and court record answer different questions. The jail search tells you whether someone is currently held by the Sheriff’s Office. For filed charges, hearings, case numbers and court activity, use Michigan’s court system.
- First obtain the inmate’s correct legal name from the jail record.
- Open MiCOURT Case Search.
- Accept the public-search terms when prompted.
- Search using the person’s name or known case number.
- Select the appropriate St. Clair County court record.
- Review the available docket and hearing information.
MiCOURT itself cautions that online information is for informational use and does not replace the official court record.
Request Additional Sheriff’s Records
If the information you need is not available through the inmate lookup or court system, the Sheriff’s Service Bureau maintains inmate and law-enforcement records and processes Freedom of Information Act requests.
- Mail/in person: St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, 1170 Michigan Road, Port Huron, MI 48060
- Fax: 810-966-4302
- FOIA information: St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office FOIA page
The Sheriff’s published Service Bureau information currently lists $5 for the first page of a written report, $1 for each additional page, a $15 handling fee, and $1 per photograph. It states that a FOIA response may take five business days. Fees and procedures can change, so confirm them before ordering a large record set.
Other Jail Information Families Commonly Need
Classification
People confined for more than 72 hours are generally classified before assignment to the jail’s general population, subject to security or other exceptional conditions. The classification process includes orientation and information about available jail programs and services.
Programs and services
Published programming includes life skills, alcohol and drug education, anger management, domestic-violence programming, parenting, trauma and PTSD groups, recovery services, medication-assisted treatment, re-entry case management, GED and high-school completion, adult basic education, tutoring, spiritual services and mental-health services. Availability and eligibility can depend on housing, court orders and jail operations.
Sentence-reduction petition
The county states that an eligible sentenced inmate may petition for a 25% sentence reduction once per sentence when the original jail sentence is at least 60 days and at least 50% of the sentence has been completed. The inmate requests the form through the jail tablet. Approval is not automatic: jail staff review eligibility and behavior, probation provides a recommendation and the sentencing judge makes the final decision. Conditional sentences and sentences reducible by payment of fines and costs are not eligible under the published procedure.
