Find a Sumner County Jail Inmate and Check Current Booking Status
If someone was arrested in Gallatin, Hendersonville, Portland, White House or elsewhere in Sumner County, start with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office inmate roster. The live jail record can help confirm current custody and may show the inmate ID, age, booking date, charges, photograph and bond information.
Use the jail roster for the immediate custody question, then use the court system for hearings and case status or Tennessee’s state offender search if the person has been transferred from the county jail.
Information reviewed October 28, 2026. Jail custody, bond, visitation and release information can change after an online search.

How to Search the Official Sumner County Jail Roster
The Sheriff’s Office maintains a searchable inmate page rather than requiring families to use a commercial people-search service. For a recent Sumner County arrest, this is the best first check.
- Open the official inmate page. Use the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office Inmates page.
- Search the person’s legal booking name. Start with the last name or the exact first-and-last-name spelling. If the full search fails, try a shorter name because spelling, hyphens, suffixes and middle names can affect results.
- Open the matching inmate record. Do not rely on a name alone. Compare age, sex, photograph, booking date and other available identifiers.
- Save the inmate ID. The Sheriff’s individual inmate records publish an inmate ID. Keep it because it is useful when asking about mail, money, medical delivery or another jail service.
- Read every charge and bond separately. One booking can contain several charges, and the Sheriff’s roster can publish a separate bond amount beside each charge.
- Use the court record for the next stage. Jail charges describe the booking. For hearings, filed charges, later changes and case outcomes, continue to Sumner County court records.
What You Can Find in a Sumner County Inmate Record
Current individual records published by the Sheriff’s Office show substantially more than a name-only list. Available fields can include the following:
| Roster field | What it helps you confirm | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Inmate ID | The jail’s identifier for that person | It is not the same as a court case number. |
| Name and photograph | Helps distinguish similar names | A booking photograph does not establish guilt. |
| Age, race and sex | Additional identity checks | Never identify a person from one field alone. |
| Booking date | When the jail admission was recorded | It may differ from the date of the alleged offense. |
| Charge description | The allegation connected with the booking | The prosecutor or court may later amend or dismiss a charge. |
| Bond | Bond information currently displayed for a charge | A displayed amount does not guarantee immediate release. |
Use the roster as a current custody source, not as proof of conviction. Criminal guilt and the final case disposition are determined through the court process.
If the Person Does Not Appear in the Jail Search
A blank search is not enough to conclude that no arrest happened. Work through the likely custody path before relying on an unofficial database.
| Possible reason | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Arrest happened very recently | Intake, identification and booking may still be underway. Search again and call 615-452-2616 if confirmation is urgent. |
| Name is entered differently | Try the legal surname, maiden name, hyphenated spelling, suffix or a shorter last-name search. |
| Person was released | Current-custody pages may no longer answer the question. Search the related Sumner County court case. |
| Person transferred to Tennessee state custody | Use the Tennessee Department of Correction FOIL search rather than continuing to search the county roster. |
| Another county or federal agency holds the person | Identify the arresting/receiving agency and search that correctional system. |
| You are actually checking a warrant | Use the Sheriff’s separate Warrants Lookup. A warrant search and a jail-custody search answer different questions. |
How to Read Bond and Release Information
The Sumner County inmate record can display bond beside each listed charge. Read every charge separately. A person with several charges may have different bond information for each one.
Before paying or traveling to the jail:
- Reopen the inmate record and confirm the person is still listed.
- Write down the inmate ID and every charge.
- Check the current bond entry for each charge.
- Ask the jail or responsible court whether another hold affects release.
- Confirm where and how an authorized bond must be handled before sending money.
The Sheriff’s Office also warns that it will not call, text or email citizens demanding money, gift cards, wire transfers or other payments for warrants, fines or inmate release. Treat an unsolicited payment demand as a potential scam and verify it through the Sheriff’s published number.
Find Court Dates, Filed Charges and Case Status
The jail roster answers, “Is this person in Sumner County Jail?” The court record answers a different question: “What is happening in the criminal case?”
Sumner County’s court system separates misdemeanor and preliminary felony matters from later felony proceedings:
| Need | Where to check | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Current county-jail custody | Sumner County Sheriff inmate roster | Booking, inmate ID, charges and displayed bond information |
| Misdemeanor case or felony preliminary hearing | General Sessions Court | Misdemeanor criminal jurisdiction and preliminary hearings in felony cases |
| Felony case / criminal jury matter | Criminal Court | Felony criminal cases and criminal jury trials |
| State prison or TDOC supervision | TDOC FOIL | Felony offenders in current or former state custody/supervision |
Micro-step: follow a booking into court
- Copy the inmate’s full legal name, booking date and charge description from the Sheriff’s roster.
- Open Sumner County Circuit Court.
- Review the appropriate General Sessions or Criminal Court docket/case information.
- Match the defendant and case carefully; do not assume a same-name court result belongs to the inmate.
- For a certified document or information not available online, contact the court clerk at 615-452-4367.
Sumner County Jail Visitation
The Sheriff’s Office announced new visitation times beginning June 15, 2026. The currently published schedule lists:
| Visit type | Published availability |
|---|---|
| On-site public visitation | Monday-Friday, 12:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. |
| Off-site remote visitation | Seven days a week, 8:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. |
Housing assignments, security restrictions, court movement or operational changes can affect an available visit. Therefore, check the official visitation page immediately before scheduling or traveling.
For visitation questions or problems, the Sheriff’s current instructions direct callers to 615-452-2616, then Option 2 → Option 1.
Inmate Mail, Digital Messages and Commissary Money
Personal letters
Ordinary family-and-friend mail is processed through an authorized third party. Use the inmate’s exact name and ID:
Offender ID Number
SUMNER COUNTY JAIL
PO BOX 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
The sender’s first and last name must appear on the envelope. The Sheriff’s rules state that incomplete addressing can cause mail to be discarded. Do not place legal mail, money orders, personal checks, gift cards or cash in ordinary personal mail.
Photographs are not accepted inside envelopes. The jail notes that picture postcards may be used. Friends and family also may not send books to inmates; paperback books are provided through the jail library.
Legal/privileged mail
Sumner County Jail
117 West Smith Street
Gallatin, TN 37066
Include the sender’s full name and return address. Legal/privileged correspondence follows the jail’s physical-address process rather than the personal-mail scanning address.
Money orders for commissary
Money orders must be sent separately from letters and other items. Write the inmate’s name and identification number on the money order and send it to:
117 West Smith Street
Gallatin, TN 37066
The Sheriff’s Office states that cash is not accepted. An improperly marked envelope or an envelope containing a money order together with letters, pictures or other items can be rejected.
Digital messages through JailFunds
The Sheriff’s mail instructions also provide digital messaging through JailFunds.
- Friends and family can send a digital message and may attach a photo.
- The Sheriff’s page says sending a message to the inmate is free for the public.
- An inmate-initiated outgoing message currently costs $0.50 from the inmate’s commissary account.
- The recipient gets one free response to an inmate message.
- Indigent inmates receive two free outgoing messages per week.
- The system allows a maximum of 150 incoming messages during a 30-day period.
- Incoming and outgoing messages are monitored and can be denied by jail administration.
Before depositing money, confirm the inmate ID and current custody. Vendor fees and payment options can change, so review the total shown during the official checkout process before submitting funds.
Inmate telephone service
The Sheriff’s Office maintains a separate Telephone System page. Because communication vendors, rates and account methods can change, use the current Sheriff-linked telephone instructions instead of an old third-party jail directory when setting up an account.
Medical Care and Medication Drop-Off
Sumner County Jail states that inmates have access to 24/7 medical services, including dental care, mental-health evaluation and treatment.
| Medical item | Current published information |
|---|---|
| Medical-related visit/treatment | $10 debit from the inmate account |
| Prescription medication | $5 debit from the inmate account |
| No account funds | Medical care is not denied because of insufficient funds; the account may be debited when future funds become available. |
| Medication drop-off | Daily, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. |
| Medical staff | 615-442-1815 or 615-442-1924 |
Family members may bring properly labeled medication to the jail visitation lobby and tell the officer they are there to drop off medication. The jail identifies itself as a non-narcotic facility.
Medical privacy rules limit what staff can disclose to relatives or friends. The Sheriff’s guidance states that medical information generally requires the inmate’s consent and authorization before it can be released.
How to Request an Older Jail or Sheriff’s Record
The live roster is designed primarily for present custody. If the person has already been released and you need an older Sheriff’s record, incident report or other existing record, use the Sheriff’s Records Division and Sumner County public-records process.
- Collect the person’s full legal name and approximate arrest or booking date.
- Add the inmate ID, incident number, warrant number or other identifier if you already have it.
- Describe the exact existing record you want rather than asking the county to create a new report.
- Start with the Sheriff’s Records Division or the Sumner County Public Records Request page.
- For a court record, contact the clerk of the court instead; the county Public Records Request Coordinator does not process court-record requests.
The Sheriff’s Records Division says many requests may take up to 10 working days. The county’s general public-records page states that a response is provided within 7 business days. Sumner County also requires proof of Tennessee citizenship to inspect or receive copies under its published public-records policy.
Records can be redacted, restricted or withheld when they contain protected/private information or relate to an active investigation.
If the Inmate Was Transferred to Tennessee State Custody
A person may disappear from the Sumner County roster after release or transfer. For a sentenced felony offender moved into Tennessee Department of Correction custody or supervision, use TDOC FOIL.
FOIL can provide information such as a photograph, current status, assigned location, offense, sentence details, parole-hearing information and release information when available.
- Open the Tennessee Felony Offender Information search.
- Search by name, TDOC ID or State ID.
- Use aliases when appropriate.
- Open the matching result and verify identifying information before relying on it.
FOIL is not a replacement for the Sumner County Jail roster. Use the Sheriff search for local jail custody and FOIL after a move into Tennessee felony correctional custody or supervision.
Custody-change notifications
Tennessee also participates in VINE for offender and custody notifications. TDOC describes VINE as a free service that can provide qualifying notifications by text, email, phone or app. See the TDOC Offender Search and VINE information page for the current state links.

Sumner County Jail Inmate Search FAQs
1. How do I search for an inmate in Sumner County, Tennessee?
Use the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office official Inmates page. Search the person’s legal name, open the matching record and compare the inmate ID, age, booking date, photograph, charges and bond information before relying on the result.
2. What information does the Sumner County jail roster show?
Current individual inmate records can show an inmate ID, name, photograph, race, sex, age, booking date, charge descriptions and bond information. Available fields can vary from one booking to another.
3. Why can’t I find someone who was recently arrested?
The booking may still be processing, the name may be entered differently, the person may already have been released, or another agency may hold the person. Retry the official roster and call 615-452-2616 if live custody confirmation is important.
4. Does a Sumner County inmate record prove the person was convicted?
No. A jail roster reflects custody and booking information. It does not establish guilt or the final court result. Use the Sumner County court system to check filed charges, hearings and case disposition.
5. How do I find a Sumner County inmate’s bond amount?
Open the inmate’s individual Sheriff’s record and review the bond shown beside each charge. A $0, N/A or monetary entry does not by itself guarantee release, so confirm holds and current release conditions before paying or traveling to the jail.
6. How do I find an inmate’s Sumner County court date?
First identify the inmate and booking through the Sheriff roster, then use Sumner County Circuit Court information and dockets. General Sessions handles misdemeanor cases and preliminary felony hearings, while felony criminal cases are heard in Criminal Court.
7. What address should I use for Sumner County inmate mail?
Ordinary personal mail is addressed to the offender’s full name and offender ID number, SUMNER COUNTY JAIL, PO BOX 247, Phoenix, MD 21131. Legal/privileged mail follows the separate physical-jail address at 117 West Smith Street, Gallatin, TN 37066.
8. How can I send money or a message to a Sumner County inmate?
The Sheriff’s instructions allow separately mailed money orders for Commissary Services at 117 West Smith Street with the inmate’s name and ID. Digital messaging is available through JailFunds. Confirm the inmate’s identity and current custody before sending funds.
9. Where do I search if the inmate was transferred to a Tennessee state prison?
Use Tennessee Department of Correction’s FOIL search. FOIL is for felony offenders currently or formerly in TDOC custody or supervision and is separate from the Sumner County Jail inmate roster.
10. How do I request an older Sumner County jail or Sheriff’s record?
Use the Sumner County Sheriff’s Records Division or the county public-records request process and provide the full name, approximate date and any inmate, incident or warrant number you know. Court records must be requested from the appropriate court clerk instead.
CountyJailInmateSearch.org is an independent informational website and is not operated by the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, Sumner County Government or the State of Tennessee. Jail records can change quickly, and an arrest or booking does not establish guilt.
